An Assessment of How Urban Crime and Victimization Affects Life Satisfaction

We assess the effect of the homicide rate, individual´s perception of security in their neighborhood of residence, and of the effect of their having been victimized, on life satisfaction. We find a negative effect of the homicide rate on life satisfaction for the subsample of individuals living in their current houses for at least 10 years or more, who had moved to that place at some point in the past. We also find a positive and robust effect of the perception of security in the households´neighborhood for the whole sample, and for different subsamples considered. Having been victim of an offense is also robustly negatively related to life satisfaction, in particular in the cases where the offense was robbery.Quality of Life, Life Satisfaction, Crime. This paper focuses on an analysis of the emotive-evaluative discourse of the linguistic personality of the clergyman. Using a set of software tools for processing language corpora developed by Lexical Computing Ltd., a quantitative analysis was carried out of the text of “The Sermon for Holy Trinity Day. Pentecost” (8 June 2014). The subject of the study was the text of sermon No 4, which had evoked a huge response in society. Its author was Archpriest Dimitry Smirnov. The study was conducted not only from the perspective of corpus linguistics, but also from that of discourse theory, the components of which are religious discourse and emotive-evaluative discourse. The understanding of the concept of linguistic personality was also discussed. As a result of the study, the main concept of “Man” in the preacher’s discourse was selected and the most important communicative parameters, such as expressivity and informality, were identified. Among the pretextual presuppositions of the text of the sermon is the knowledge the preacher received at school, which placed a particular emphasis on mathematics and physics

Living with genome instability: the adaptation of phytoplasmas todiverse environments of their insect and plant hosts

Phytoplasmas (Candidatus Phytoplasma, Class Mollicutes) cause disease in hundreds of economically important plants, and are obligately transmitted by sap-feeding insects of the order Hemiptera, mainly leafhoppers and psyllids. The 706,569-bp chromosome and four plasmids of aster yellows phytoplasma strain witches broom (AY-WB) were sequenced and compared to the onion yellows phytoplasma strain M (OY-M) genome. The phytoplasmas have small repeat-rich genomes. The repeated DNAs are organized into large clusters, potential mobile units (PMUs), which contain tra5 insertion sequences (ISs), and specialized sigma factors and membrane proteins. So far, PMUs are unique to phytoplasmas. Compared to mycoplasmas, phytoplasmas lack several recombination and DNA modification functions, and therefore phytoplasmas probably use different mechanisms of recombination, likely involving PMUs, for the creation of variability, allowing phytoplasmas to adjust to the diverse environments of plants and insects. The irregular GC skews and presence of ISs and large repeated sequences in the AY-WB and OY-M genomes are indicative of high genomic plasticity. Nevertheless, segments of {approx}250 kb, located between genes lplA and glnQ are syntenic between the two phytoplasmas, contain the majority of the metabolic genes and no ISs. AY-WB is further along in the reductive evolution process than OY-M. The AY-WB genome is {approx}154 kb smaller than the OY-M genome, primarily as a result of fewer multicopy sequences, including PMUs. Further, AY-WB lacks genes that are truncated and are part of incomplete pathways in OY-M. This is the first comparative phytoplasma genome analysis and report of the existence of PMUs in phytoplasma genomes

The year 2017 is marked by several memorial dates: One-hundred-year anniversary of Soviet library science, bibliography and book studies; 155-th anniversary of Nikolas (Nikolai Alexandrovich) Rubakin (1862-1946), encyclopedist, prominent educator and father of bibliopsychology; and the 155-th anniversary of Rubakin’s associate in his area of expertise - Nikolai Mikhailovich Somov, a half forgotten today bibliologist and bibliographer (1867-1951). Based on the confidential correspondence between Nikolas Rubakin and Nikolai Somov (N. Rubakin’s Archive deposited today at the Manuscript Department of the Russian State Library), the author describes unfavorable political and academic environment in the USSR in 1920s-1930s which took a heavy toll on the national book studies, library science and bibliography and resulted in terminating several promising trends and straining science priorities. The scientists’ attitude to the colleague then leading in the Soviet book studies is revealed. The author concludes that the professional landscape was rather sad, but we need to acknowledge all aspects of the professional history

A global reference for human genetic variation

The 1000 Genomes Project set out to provide a comprehensive description of common human genetic variation by applying whole-genome sequencing to a diverse set of individuals from multiple populations. Here we report completion of the project, having reconstructed the genomes of 2,504 individuals from 26 populations using a combination of low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, deep exome sequencing, and dense microarray genotyping. We characterized a broad spectrum of genetic variation, in total over 88 million variants (84.7 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), 3.6 million short insertions/deletions (indels), and 60,000 structural variants), all phased onto high-quality haplotypes. This resource includes >99% of SNP variants with a frequency of >1% for a variety of ancestries. We describe the distribution of genetic variation across the global sample, and discuss the implications for common disease studies
