Targeting families and teens: Television violence on the WB

No full text
The author investigates the amount of violence contained within WB primetime programs in order to determine The WB\u27s number of violent acts per program and per program hour as well as determine some of the possible effects of The WB\u27s violence. The author sampled one week of WB primetime programming. A definition of violence similar to other violence studies was employed for comparability. The unit of analysis used for coding was the violent act. The author found all WB primetime programs to contain some violence. The most violent WB primetime program was Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the highest number of violent acts aired was found on Tuesday night. The author concludes the majority of WB primetime programs contain a low amount of violence. The author suggests future violence studies employ a single accepted definition of violence and include The WB and UPN programming in their samples

An assessment of the impact of possible CAP reform scenarios on Romanian agriculture

Get PDF
Using a simplified model, with key-variable the prices of two different possible scenarios of CAP reform after 2013 (moderate and radical), this paper present a comparison between the price effects of implementation of each reform scenario at 2015 horizon on Romanian agriculture. This short analysis shows that, under the presented hypotheses, the net welfare effect, due to the price changes, for the selected products, is positive in both reform scenarios, yet greater in the case of the radical reform. Integrated in the large context of Romanian development, it seems that the influence of CAP reform upon agriculture and rural areas will be most likely a gradual one: an interpenetration between the two scenarios is foreseeable, starting with the moderate reform that will dominate the period around 2013, the reform measures acquiring a more radical character afterwards.CAP reform, Romania, welfare effects, Agricultural and Food Policy,

A 0.12mm2 Wien-Bridge Temperature Sensor with 0.1°C (3σ) Inaccuracy from -40°C to 180°C

Resistor-based temperature sensors can achieve much higher resolution and energy efficiency than conventional BJT-based sensors [1], but they typically occupy more area (> 0.25 mm 2 ) and have lower operating temperatures (le 125 {circ} {C}) [2]-[4]. This work describes a 0.12mm 2 resistor-based sensor that uses a Wien-bridge (WB) filter to achieve 0.1 {circ} {C} (3 sigma) inaccuracy from - 40 {circ} {C} to 180 {circ} {C}. Compared to a state-of-the-art WB sensor [4], it occupies 6 × less area and achieves comparable relative accuracy over a 76% wider operating range. Bray-Curtis (AFD) differentiation in molecular ecology: Forecasting, an adjustment (AA), and comparative performance in selection detection

Get PDF
Geographic genetic differentiation measures are used for purposes such as assessing genetic diversity and connectivity, and searching for signals of selection. Confirmation by unrelated measures can minimize false positives. A popular differentiation measure, Bray-Curtis, has been used increasingly in molecular ecology, renamed AFD (hereafter called BCAFD). Critically, BCAFD is expected to be partially independent of the commonly used Hill “Q-profile” measures. BCAFD needs scrutiny for potential biases, by examining limits on its value, and comparing simulations against expectations. BCAFD has two dependencies on within-population (alpha) variation, undesirable for a between-population (beta) measure. The first dependency is derived from similarity to (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.). The second dependency is that BCAFD cannot be larger than the highest allele proportion in either location (alpha variation), which can be overcome by data-filtering or by a modified statistic AA or “Adjusted AFD”. The first dependency does not forestall applications such as assessing connectivity or selection, if we know the measure's null behavior under selective neutrality with specified conditions—which is shown in this article for AA, for equilibrium, and nonequilibrium, for the commonly used data type of single-nucleotide-polymorphisms (SNPs) in two locations. Thus, AA can be used in tandem with mathematically contrasting differentiation measures, with the aim of reducing false inferences. For detecting adaptive loci, the relative performance of AA and other measures was evaluated, showing that it is best to use two mathematically different measures simultaneously, and that AA is in one of the best such pairwise criteria. For any application, using AA, rather than BCAFD, avoids the counterintuitive limitation by maximum allele proportion within localities

Compassionate care in radiography recruitment, education and training: A post-Francis Report review of the current literature and patient perspectives

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from WB Saunders via the DOI in this record.Compassion is elemental in the care of a patient during their medical imaging (MI) procedure and is highly topical in the light of the Francis Report. The patient–practitioner interaction is an amalgam of context, communication and individual differences, and whilst compassion is a term in common parlance in the media, policy and radiographers' professional documents, its meaning and manifestation in radiography recruitment, education and practice are less clearly articulated. A review of the existing literature was undertaken, including a small scale study exploring patients' experiences in diagnostic medical imaging. Themes from the study included communication; competence; emotions; attitudes and relationships, but notably absent was any mention of compassion per se. Radiography research would benefit from further exploratory work into the nature of compassionate patient care in the unique context of the medical imaging encounter; offering an evidence-based contribution to radiography in the light of the Francis Report.Funding for the preliminary study came from the Higher Education Academy. The doctoral research from which this review article was written is self-funded by the corresponding author

Entropy, or Information, Unifies Ecology and Evolution and Beyond

This article discusses how entropy/information methods are well-suited to analyzing and forecasting the four processes of innovation, transmission, movement, and adaptation, which are the common basis to ecology and evolution. Macroecologists study assemblages of differing species, whereas micro-evolutionary biologists study variants of heritable information within species, such as DNA and epigenetic modifications. These two different modes of variation are both driven by the same four basic processes, but approaches to these processes sometimes differ considerably. For example, macroecology often documents patterns without modeling underlying processes, with some notable exceptions. On the other hand, evolutionary biologists have a long history of deriving and testing mathematical genetic forecasts, previously focusing on entropies such as heterozygosity. Macroecology calls this Gini–Simpson, and has borrowed the genetic predictions, but sometimes this measure has shortcomings. Therefore it is important to note that predictive equations have now been derived for molecular diversity based on Shannon entropy and mutual information. As a result, we can now forecast all major types of entropy/information, creating a general predictive approach for the four basic processes in ecology and evolution. Additionally, the use of these methods will allow seamless integration with other studies such as the physical environment, and may even extend to assisting with evolutionary algorithms

The definitive version was published in Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology 180 (2011): 112-114, doi:10.1016/j.molbiopara.2011.07.008.The Giardia lamblia genome consists of 12 Mb divided among 5 chromosomes ranging in size from approximately 1 to 4 Mb. The assembled contigs of the genotype A1 isolate, WB, were previously mapped along the 5 chromosomes on the basis of hybridization of plasmid clones representing the contigs to chromosomes separated by PFGE. In the current report, we have generated an MluI optical map of the WB genome to improve the accuracy of the physical map. This has allowed us to correct several assembly errors and to better define the extent of the subtelomeric regions that are not included in the genome assembly. This work was funded in part by the Woods Hole Center for Oceans and Human Health, jointly funded by the National Science Foundation (OCE-0430724) and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (P50 ES012742)

Right-Wing and Left-Wing Critiques of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB)

No full text
This paper discusses the critiques forming the debate on the future of the two major global financial institutions – the IMF and the WB. The author does not claim what the IMF and the WB really are, but reviews how they are seen by their critics. The article describes and summarizes the multifaceted critical discussion and proposes an elementary scheme formed by four basic positions. These are based on two variables: (1) moderation or radicalism of the critiques; (2) their affiliation with the right or the left side of the political spectrum. As a result, four basic critical positions emerge: right reformers, right radicals, left reformers, and left radicals. This paper characterizes each of them by overviewing the opinions of two representative participants of the discussion

Sea Defences

The increased demand on reliable design methods for protective structures has resulted in the Netherlands in preparing a set of design guidelines for revetments of the sea-, and river-dikes, and for bank protection. These guidelines are intended for technicians and organizations directly involved in the design and management of protective structures. In this report a brief review on general design philosophy, different hydraulic and geotechnical aspects and design criteria for various types of revetments is given. The stability criteria based on small and large scale tests are formulated for the following systems: rip-rap, concrete units, asphalt and grass-mats. Developments for some other systems are also briefly mentioned.KWP-collectio
