Shauri, Images of Arabs, and Representation of Colonial Hierarchies in the Visual Sources of German East Africa
The article deals with the display of colonial hierarchies in the shauri scene (in German colonial practice shauri was a council, a meeting of the administration of the colony and local residents, where the decisions of the administration were announced and brought to the attention of the population; a court and other meetings with the participation of locals were called shauri too) in the visual sources of the German East Africa, namely on postcards, in photography, sketches, illustrations of memoirs, and on the so-called trading cards. Studying of these sources shows that the position in space and postures of shauri participants are never random: they demonstrate dominance, the presence of might, or, conversely, subordination, and reflect the balance of power that is relevant both for specific participants in the meeting and sometimes for the entire region.
Significantly, in this expression of dominance, the Arab-Swahili component of the German East Africa population occupies a special place. Artistic and compositional means emphasize the significant influence of Arabs and Arabized Swahili on shauri; sources depicting them outside the council scenes also demonstrate visual superiority over African inhabitants of the colony. It turned out that there are stable contexts in which Arabs appear in the visual sources, notably in the scenes depicting trade, markets, and slave trade. The constant topos of Arabs’ connection with slavery and their role as brutal slave traders in German verbal and visual colonial discourse is also embodied in the shauri scenes and in the general visual material. These sources allow us to trace the reflection of the racialized and hierarchized picture of the world of both the German colonialists and the local Arab and Arab-Swahili elite

Robot arm imitating human upper arm: the design and stress analysis / M.S.I.M Sabari and R.L.A. Shauri
In previous work, a developed four degree of freedom (DoF) arm failed to move in actual experiment due to the vibration that occurred at the first joint which carries the heaviest payload of the arm. It indicates the importance of analysing robot design before a prototype can be built for real motion. A new robotic arm that was designed to imitate a human upper arm has four joints which rotate around x, y, and z-axis to move its four links to the required posture of the wrist. The work demonstrates the use of a design software to confirms feasibility of the joints for motion and finite element analysis (FEA) to predict the behaviour of the structure when under force. FEA results showed that most of the links have experienced lower stress levels than of the tensile yield strength of alloy steel material which proved the strength of the structure to sustain the applied 15Nm stress test. Hence, with minor adjustments to match with the size of the existing robot hand, the design is ready for fabrication process in the next study
Assessing the role of corporate social responsibility initiatives in helping communities: a case of safaricom foundation initiative at the young men’s Christian association (YMCA) in Shauri moyo

in CommunicationCorporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by businesses to contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce as well as the local community. The overall objective of the study was to examine if the project initiated by Safaricom Foundation at the YMCA centre in Shauri Moyo benefited the community. The specific objectives were to examine perceptions of people about corporate social responsibility at the Shauri Moyo YMCA centre. To assess the level of stakeholder involvement in development of the CSR programme at Shauri Moyo. To find out how the refurbishment of the recreational facility at Shauri Moyo has benefitted the local community. The study used descriptive research design; the sample size was 112 respondents who comprised of Safaricom Foundation staff and the project beneficiaries. The sampling technique adopted was purposive sampling for the target population. Questionnaires were used to collect data from the project beneficiaries while a semi- structured interview guide was used to collect data from the Safaricom Foundation staff. A focus guide was used to collect data from 2 discussion groups comprising of 9 respondents from the Shauri Moyo YMCA centre. The study revealed the community had benefitted immensely from the activities associated with the refurbishment of the recreational facility. Safaricom Foundation had policies on CSR, an indication that they were committed to CSR issues. However, greater stakeholder participation in development projects is critically important in order for communities to increase their participation to allay the fears that companies sometimes engage in CSR activities that are perceived as purely for PR gains. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
