A far-ultraviolet survey of 47 Tucanae. I. Imaging
We present results from the imaging portion of a far-ultraviolet (FUV) survey of the core of 47 Tucanae. We have detected 767 FUV sources, 527 of which have optical counterparts in archival HST/WFPC2 images of the same field. Most of our FUV sources are main-sequence (MS) turnoff stars near the detection limit of our survey. However, the FUV/optical color-magnitude diagram (CMD) also reveals 19 blue stragglers (BSs), 17 white dwarfs (WDs), and 16 cataclysmic variable (CV) candidates. The BSs lie on the extended cluster MS, and four of them are variable in the FUV data. The WDs occupy the top of the cluster cooling sequence, down to an effective temperature of Teff~=20,000 K. Our FUV source catalog probably contains many additional, cooler WDs without optical counterparts. Finally, the CV candidates are objects between the WD cooling track and the extended cluster MS. Four of the CV candidates are previously known or suspected cataclysmics. All of these are bright and variable in the FUV. Another CV candidate is associated with the semidetached binary system V36 that was recently found by M. D. Albrow and coworkers. V36 has an orbital period of 0.4 or 0.8 days, blue optical colors, and is located within 1" of a Chandra X-ray source. A few of the remaining CV candidates may represent chance superpositions or SMC interlopers, but at least half are expected to be real cluster members with peculiar colors. However, only a few of these CV candidates are possible counterparts to Chandra X-ray sources. Thus, it is not yet clear which, if any, of them are true CVs, rather than noninteracting MS/WD binaries or helium WDs

Unveiling the core of M 15 in the far-ultraviolet
We present an analysis of our deep far- (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) photometry of the core region of the dense globular cluster M 15. Our FUV-NUV colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) is the deepest one presented for a globular cluster so far, and shows all hot stellar populations expected in a globular cluster, such as horizontal branch stars, blue stragglers, white dwarfs, cataclysmic variables and even main sequence stars. The main sequence turn-off is clearly visible and the main sequence stars form a prominent track that extends at least two magnitudes below the main sequence turn-off. We compare and discuss the radial distribution of the various stellar populations that show up in the FUV. We search for variability amongst our FUV sources and tentatively classify our variable candidates based on an analysis of the UV colours and variability properties. An ultracompact x-ray binary in the Globular Cluster M15 (NGC 7078)
We have used the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope to image the core of the globular cluster M15 in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) wave band. Based on these observations, we identify the FUV counterpart of the recently discovered low-mass X-ray binary M15 X-2. Our time-resolved FUV photometry shows a modulation with 0.062+/-0.004 mag semiamplitude, and we clearly detect a period of 22.5806+/-0.0002 minutes. We have carried out extensive Monte Carlo simulations, which show that the signal is consistent with being coherent over the entire observational time range of more than 3000 cycles. This strongly suggests that it represents the orbital period of the binary system. M15 X-2 is FUV-bright (FUV~=17 mag) and is characterized by an extremely blue spectral energy distribution (Flambda~lambda-2.0). We also find evidence for an excess of flux between 1500 and 1600 Å and probably between 1600 and 2000 Å that might be due to C IV 1550 Å and He II 1640 Å emission lines. We also show that M15 X-2's X-ray luminosity can be powered by accretion at the rate expected for mass transfer driven by gravitational waves at this binary period. The observed FUV emission appears to be dominated by an irradiated accretion disk around the neutron star primary, and the variability can be explained by irradiation of the low-mass white dwarf donor if the inclination of the system is ~34°. We conclude that all observational characteristics of M15 X-2 are consistent with its being an ultracompact X-ray binary, only the third confirmed such object in a globular cluster
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
