Exotic symplectic manifolds from Lefschetz fibrations
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mathematics, 2009.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 43-44).In this thesis I construct, in all odd complex dimensions, pairs of Liouville domains W0 and W1 which are diffeomorphic to the cotangent bundle of the sphere with one extra subcritical handle, but are not symplectomorphic. While W0 is symplectically very similar to the cotangent bundle itself, W1 is more unusual. I use Seidel's exact triangles for Floer cohomology to show that the wrapped Fukaya category of W1 is trivial. As a corollary we obtain that W1 contains no compact exact Lagrangian submanifolds.by Maksim Maydanskiy.Ph.D

The Spectre of Maksim Gorky
The relationship between the Soviet Union and the African continent has increasingly attracted the attention of historians and literary critics alike, with Angola frequently treated as a fruitful case study. This chapter traces the socio-cultural microhistory of the transmission of the work of Maksim Gorky (1868–1936) in Angola––a transmission which underpinned, crucially, the development of a littérature engagé during the struggle for Angolan independence from the Portuguese Empire in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Gorky’s influence on the generation of Angolan writers active in the 1950s and 1960s––often regarded as the Geração Cultura, after the literary bulletin Cultura (1957–1961), which resided at the heart of the cultural movement supporting the drive for independence––has been explicitly acknowledged. With José Luandino Vieira as a case study, this chapter seeks to determine the ways in which Maksim Gorky’s work influenced, through processes of translation, transmission, and adaptation, a critical moment in the emergence of an Angolan national literary culture. Through comparative analyses between source and target texts, and drawing on extant scholarship of translation and ideology, this chapter analyses the ‘degrees of mediation’ between Gorky’s work and its instrumentalization by the 1950s generation of Angolan authors, and Luandino Vieira specifically. The ‘degrees of mediation’ traced in this paper fall into two main categories: first, both the translation of the Russian author into Brazilian Portuguese––with particular emphasis on the novel Mother (1906)––and its transnational dissemination across the Atlantic; second, in light of the translations then available to Angolan authors, the transposition of aspects of Gorky’s oeuvre into the early writings of José Luandino Vieira

Pelanggaran Maksim Relevansi Terdakwa Putri Chandrawati dalam Persidangan Kasus Ferdy Sambo pada Laman Kompas TV
The Ferdy Sambo case was one of the significant cases that drew the attention of the Indonesian public. Throughout the trial, the case was broadcast live on several Indonesian television channels, especially Kompas TV. The purpose of this study is to show how the defendants Putri Chandrawati violated the concept of maxims relevance during the trial in the Ferdy Sambo case. Floating maxims of relevance become the focus on this study. The author concentrates on the defendant's transgressions, but the conversation was between the judges and the defendants. The researcher used six data sets as examples to describe and examine further. The author concludes that floating maxims of relevance committed by the defendant might result in awkwardness and inadequate communication, making it impossible for the court to get clear and relevant information. This study used the note-taking approach in conjunction with a descriptive qualitative method. Since the data source is Kompas TV's official YouTube channel, the author does not require extra authorization to collect voice data.

ABSTRACT
The Ferdy Sambo case is one of the major cases that was broadcast live on various television stations in Indonesia, especially the Kompas TV station. This research aims to explain the violation of the maxim of relevance committed by the defendant Putri Chandrawati during the interrogation process at trial, in the Ferdy Sambo case. Violations of the maxim of relevance will be explained through Griece's theory. This conversation consisted of the chief judge of the panel and members of the panel with the defendant Putri Chandrawati. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with note-taking techniques. The data source was taken from the official Kompas TV YouTube page, so the author does not need special permission to take speech data. The author concludes that violations of the maxim of relevance committed by the defendant can cause irregularities and communication becomes ineffective, making it difficult for the judge to obtain clear and significant information. A violation of the maxim of relevance is characterized by the irrelevance of the speech partner's speech to the topic conveyed by the speaker.

Maksim Grek Revising Muscovy’s Book Repertoire: Teaching versus False Doctrines
The article was submitted on 05.02.2024. This article presents the results of a text study of three works by Maksim Grek. The development of the text presents a valuable opportunity to examine the creative workshop of the medieval opinion journalist, observe the process of perception of the author’s text by Russian scribes who were searching for their own didactic words, and identify the problems that were of interest to people in the mid-sixteenth century. The enlightenment and theological ideas of the Athonite theologian were in demand in the society of Muscovite Russia, when, according to Joseph of Volotsk, “everyone was in doubt about everything”. The writer himself was searching for ways and means for the words of his teaching to penetrate the soul and consciousness of an Orthodox person. Maksim Grek’s authorial revisions are seen as a reflection of his renewed efforts to give cogency to his preaching of knowledge important to the Orthodox reader, even if not always related to confessional matters. The dissemination of knowledge, defence of the foundations of Christianity, and defence of the faith against false doctrines were the essence of the preaching activity carried out by the monk. This study focuses on his works interpreting the patristic heritage and denouncing apocryphal legends. In both cases Maksim Grek responded to the requests of his inquisitive addressees. The monk’s preachings were characterised by a profound logic of reasoning, rich argumentation, and emotionally coloured words. Compared to the fate of the chapters in the writer’s lifetime codices, which were almost unchanged by copying, the history of the text of the works under consideration is unique. Their text has survived in several editions and versions belonging to both the author and scribes of the following generations. The works were not included in the lifetime Chludov collection of Maksim Grek’s works, although their critical tonality is similar to the last chapters 72 and 73 in the Chludov codex. In them, too, the writer polemises against books opposed to the truths of the Orthodox Church. The imperative tone running through the whole text emphasises the didactic character of the works. И. What does Dakpai Maksim do when he sings sygyt? A preliminary investigation of one throat singer’s personal style
Famous Tuvan throat singers of the twentieth century continue to receive attention by today’s singers. After considering the sources from the Soviet era that are currently (un)available as recordings, the author analyses a single song with sygyt throat singing by Dakpai Maksim (1921–1993). “Karalangny berem ezhi” (Give me your Karala, my friend) was published by Melodiya in 1968 and later appeared on the website of Alan Lomax’s Cultural Equity project. The author presents evidence that Dakpai was skillfully singing text with a simultaneous overtone melody and that the singer deliberately used harmonics that are avoided by most throat singers. He also analyzes a number of melodic patterns that are common in Tuva, but interpreted in his own unique way by Dakpai
