Role of the sabo facilities to the sediment discharge in the small basins, especially on the sediment gradient at a sabo-dam

    No full text
It is important that both of the hard and soft counterplans function well for the prevention of sediment disaster. However, the hard counterplans, for example, sabo-dams are not exactly understood about their role and effect. The author tried to make clear the role, the effect and the limit of sabo-dam for the prevention of disaster with the manual made by the Ministry of Construction and some case studies. From the case studies, the followings became clear. In the northwestern district of Hiroshima Prefecture, where the author had investigated and collected the data, the catchment area of torrent, where debris flow had occurred, and the sediment discharge of unit area were common. However, the proportion of the sediment gradient to the original bed gradient was smaller than the standard arranged by the Ministry of Construction. Though the sabo-dams functioned according to the plan, the number and the scale of the sabo-dams were not enough for the prevention of sediment disaster

RoMEO Studies 4: An analysis of Journal publishers' Copyright Agreements

    No full text
This article is the fourth in a series of six emanating from the UK JISC-funded RoMEO Project (Rights Metadata for Open archiving). It describes an analysis of 80 scholarly journal publishers’ copyright agreements with a particular view to their effect on author self-archiving. 90% of agreements asked for copyright transfer and 69% asked for it prior to refereeing the paper. 75% asked authors to warrant that their work had not been previously published although only two explicitly stated that they viewed self-archiving as prior publication. 28.5% of agreements provided authors with no usage rights over their own paper. Although 42.5% allowed self-archiving in some format, there was no consensus on the conditions under which self-archiving could take place. The article concludes that author-publisher copyright agreements should be reconsidered by a working party representing the needs of both partie

Niigata prefecture in Central Japan, the first auxiliary erosion and sediment control project was started at Hikagesawa, Bannai river in 1921. This river is a tributary of Yashiro river included in the Seki river system that flows through Myoko city. Afterwards, construction for erosion and sediment control in Kamakurasawa river, which is a tributary of Uono river included in the Shinano river system, was carried out from 1927. However, the historical background of construction in both facilities has not been investigated clearly. Therefore, the author performed document and facility investigation regarding Hikagesawa, Bannai river and Kamakurasawa river, and then clarified the historical background of construction. As a result, we found that Maruo Ikeda and Masao Akagi, who are famous Japanese engineers specializing in erosion and sediment control technology, led the project and introduced the latest technology at that time in the early phase of erosion and sediment control project in Niigata prefecture. Both facilities have strong influence on subsequent facility plans for erosion and sediment control in Niigata prefecture. In this study, we revealed not only the historical background of construction of facilities for erosion and sediment control at Hikagesawa, Bannai river and Kamakurasawa river but also the technological features of constructed facilities for erosion and sediment control.journal articl

Why does Miłosz so often suggest in his poetry that he has concealed something essential from his readers? What is the intended meaning of the frequent phrase of Miłosz’s: if only I told you all about myself? Why this persistent reference to some unnamed feature, truth, wisdom, revelation? Is this, as some critics tend to believe, a part of a creative strategy, some sort of a subversive play with the reader? Is this a strategy employed in order to create a dark counterargument to luminous poetry of grateful existence? Or is it, as the author of the article suggests, a deliberate strategy to entice the reader to undertake a meticulous contemplation of Miłosz’s attitude towards the social function of poetry? Sabo suggests that Miłosz, who due to historical and social reasons, put so much stress on the utility aspect of the poetic vocation, was actually a poet who was most interested in a pure poetry unyoked from any specific cause, except the cause of relentless expression of gratitude. Why does Miłosz so often suggest in his poetry that he has concealed something essential from his readers? "Wynoszone z ciemności szkice węglem na skórze wydrapane" : o twórczości literackiej Romana Sabo

    No full text
The article is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the literary work of Roman Sabo – a poet, essayist, translator, born in Poland and living in Canada for many years. The author of the article “travels” mainly in the space of his poetry, trying to find there significant places, cities and states. Using the terms suggested by Małgorzata Czermińska, the author proves that Upper Silesia reveals itself in this output as an autobiographical place mentioned, Canadian Vancouver as an autobiographical place shifted, and Ireland as an autobiographical place chosen. All these places, however, are not isolated and completely homogeneous in the space of this creative proposal. Rather, they seem to be palimpsest creations, through which the outlines of the past can be seen, in which elements of various cultures and of many landscapes intertwine, and, opalizing, define each other

Reforming Community Structures: The Public Library\u27s Impact on the Midwestern Author

    No full text
Public libraries, though increasingly overlooked, are pivotal spaces for Midwestern communities. Public libraries are fundamental institutions for those in their community and have consistently remained this way, due to the safety they provide as constant outlets for public life. Established in the late 1800s, the emerging public library system developed itself with the foundational goal of reforming society and addressing issues of “public vice” such as “drinking, gambling, and prostitution” (Goldstein 214). The following research discusses public libraries and librarians\u27 continuous support for the moral health of society and how the public library has influenced Midwestern literary careers, specifically that of author Floyd Dell. Furthermore, the cultural representation of the librarian as a maternal stereotype will be highlighted, and shown to be challenged through the characterization of Helen Raymond in Floyd Dell’s Moon-Calf and The Briary Bush

Green space management & residents’ benefits

    No full text
Management of green spaces in rental multi-family housing areas is discussed in a Swedish context and the benefits of maintenance for residents examined in this thesis. In Sweden, these green spaces are an important part of the urban green structure and the housing companies who manage these spaces are important green space providers. However, the management and maintenance of such green spaces and its benefits for residents seldom receive attention in research. The residents’ perspective is the main interest here, since they are to benefit from maintenance. The perspective of the providers (housing staff) is also included, because of their influence through provision on residents’ experiences. Taking an ex-plorative and mainly qualitative approach, two empirical studies were conducted using interviews as the main method of collecting data. In a case study of three rental and multi-family housing areas, 27 residents and 13 housing staff were interviewed regarding their experience of the maintenance of green space and their views on maintenance provision respectively. In a telephone survey of 30 municipal housing companies, housing staff were asked how they organised maintenance of green spaces and what motivated that choice. The case study identified several benefits of green space maintenance for residents and three were further explored: (1) green space being ‘well-kept’ (2) the housing area being safe and (3) a just distribution of maintenance. The results showed that several elements of maintenance and the social context, such as views of maintenance staff and of other residents, contribute to residents’ experience of these bene-fits. Views of well-kept green space were for example not simply about technical quality but e.g. the image of maintenance staff and their efforts was also considered. There is consequently a need to widen the technical discussion about how to manage and maintain green spaces

Smart IoT-Based Broiler Room Controller: Design, Implementation, Performance Evaluation, and Optimization

    No full text
This study presents the creation and performance assessment of an Internet of Things (IoT) smart broiler room controller. In order to monitor and regulate vital environmental parameters like temperature and humidity and guarantee ideal circumstances for broiler development, the system combines an ESP32 microcontroller with the Arduino platform. The system creates the perfect broiler-growing environment by dynamically adjusting fan, heater, and light settings based on real-time data using sensors like the DHT11 and LDR. We conducted a comprehensive performance study over seven weeks, comparing sensor values (temperature from the DHT11 and thermometer, and humidity from the DHT11 and hygrometer) with reference standards. With an average temperature of 29.99°C and a humidity level of approximately 39.95%, the results demonstrated steady temperature regulation and consistent, albeit marginally poor, humidity control. We found problems with the system\u27s humidity management mechanism, which relied on a fan and heater and lacked sufficient accuracy. The absence of a real-time clock (RTC) module also impacted scheduling consistency, and the remote interface\u27s lack of security features increased the risk of unwanted access. Adding an RTC module for improved scheduling, incorporating a humidifier for more accurate humidity control, and implementing a secure login mechanism to improve remote interface security were some of the suggestions offered to optimize the system.  Additionally, using platforms like PlatformIO and MicroPython instead of the Arduino IDE could streamline code management and boost system performance. Additionally, the report recommends power consumption optimization techniques, such as using MQTT communication protocols and integrating solar power. In order to suggest strategies for system optimization, this study reuses elements of the experimental data, methodology, figures, tables, and implementation from our previous work [1], along with additional text and code included in the methodology. Through increased accuracy, sustainability, and efficiency, the suggested techniques seek to strengthen the system\u27s performance as a reliable broiler farming solution
