The economic and fiscal impacts of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, a macroeconomic analysis
No full textThis report estimates the macroeconomic and fiscal impacts of Hurricane Sandy on the economy of New Jersey using the R/ECON™ forecasting model of the state’s economy. The model consists of more than 250 quarterly time-series equations and 30 employment sectors.The analysis takes into account both the economic losses resulting from the hurricane and the offsetting positive economic impacts associated with recovery and reconstruction spending in the months and years following the storm.However, the estimates of impacts depend upon the restoration expenditures actually being made. If the funds for these restoration and recovery expenditures are not made available, the offsetting positive impacts to the economy will not occur and the New Jersey economy will be significantly damaged. Union County: Baselines for the Future
No full textIn 2015, the Rutgers Economic Advisory Service group (R/ECON™) of Rutgers University prepared the third Union County Baseline report (commissioned by the Union County government). It follows and expands upon preceding studies conducted for the Union County Alliance in June 1994 and June 2000.
This third baseline report uses recent historical data to explore the impacts of the Great Recession and the nation’s subsequent recovery on Union County’s economy. In addition, it aims to identify local industries that may offer the County a competitive advantage given the local labor force and its skill diversity. This industry identification is partially enabled through the use of economic forecasts for New Jersey and Union County, which assess the region's prospects for employment growth in the next decade.
The current study is designed to inform economic development efforts and establish a common base of knowledge from which long-range plans and strategic initiatives can be developed. Additionally, through the targeting of industrial development programs developed in this report, it is hoped that Union County will be able to use its economic development resources more efficientl

Based on both semester and year-long courses taught to undergraduate seniors and graduate students, this text is geared for programs in aeronautical, civil, and mechanical engineering, and in engineering science. The authors’ objective is two-fold: first, to introduce the student to the theory of structures (one- and two-dimensional) as developed from the three-dimensional theory of elasticity; and second, to introduce the student to the strength and utility of variational principles and methods, including briefly making the connection to finite element methods. No full textEarly in the fall of 1832, while steaming down the Ohio River toward its confluence with the Mississippi, the steamboat Illinois, en route to St. Louis, collided with the Yellowstone with such force that the Illinois was nearly sunk. The accident, though minor, has symbolic value in a study of Washington Irving as a Western writer, for Irving was aboard the Illinois, traveling toward Independence, Missouri, where the famous author would begin a month-long tour on the prairies of Oklahoma—the Southwest. Aboard the Yellowstone, a packet belonging to the American Fur Company, were fur traders and trappers in the employ of John Jacob Astor and his partners. The packet was completing a record-breaking trip to Fort Union at the mouth of the Yellowstone River
