SMC Education Professor and Acclaimed Writer Raina Léon Named Poet in Residence at MoAD
KSOE Professor Raina Léon has been named a Poet in Residence at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco beginning September 1. Léon is the acclaimed author of three poetry collections, Canticle of Idols, Boogeyman Dawn, and sombra :dis(locate); and the chapbook profeta without refuge. In addition, she is a Cave Canem graduate fellow and a member of the Carolina African American Writers’ Collective, the national LatinX poetry workshop CantoMundo, and the socially engaged writers association Macondo. Léon said she was honored by this recognition, which she shares with Tongo Eisen-Martin, as MoAD’s inaugural Poets in Residence. “It is incredibly fulfilling to be seen as a poet and as an educator in the fullness of my life, and in that full, black experience, be fostered in flourish.” Leon will write poetry influenced by the museum’s exhibits and teach workshops to students through a partnership with Oakland’s ARISE High School
The Power of One Voice- Power, Powerlessness, and Australian Democracy
This is the first output from an exciting new partnership between the Institute for Governance and the Museum of Australian Democracy (MOAD) at Old Parliament House. The initial purpose of the partnership was to develop a survey tool to provide data to underpin the museum’s new exhibition ‘The Power of One: Does Your Voice Count’ but it has subsequently broadened out to a more ambitious agenda to: 1. produce high quality research on the changing nature of democratic engagement in Australia and internationally; 2. heighten public awareness of problems in Australian democracy; 3. provide a repository of national and international better practice in terms of democratic innovations; 4. design and analyse unique data sets on the qualities of Australian democracy and (where appropriate) processes of democratisation internationally; 5. co-design education programmes that explore the qualities of Australian democracy and (where appropriate) processes of democratisation internationally; 6. make full use of a unique space for disseminating our research findings and debating future democratic governance; and, 7. co-author innovative ways of visualising and imagining Australian democracy. This particular report provides a snapshot of the key findings of a survey conducted in February 2014 in which Ipsos asked a representative sample of Australians to consider various issues regarding Australian democracy and their role in making it work
Measurement Invariance Gaps in Parkinson’s Disease Assessment Scale Validation: A 28-Year Systematically-Documented Analysis of Geographic and Demographic Disparities in English-Language Literature
Background: Parkinson’s disease affects over 10 million people globally, yet validation
evidence for major clinical assessment scales (UPDRS, MDS-UPDRS, MoCA, MMSE) is
concentrated in high-income countries. Measurement invariance-whether scales measure
constructs equivalently across populations-requires geographically and demographically
diverse evidence for equitable global implementation.
Objective: Characterize geographic origin, demographic representation, and methodological reporting quality of validation studies for major PD assessment scales in Englishlanguage peer-reviewed literature.
Methods: Systematic review (PRISMA 2020) of MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane
CENTRAL through July 31, 2024. Included 108 studies validating UPDRS, MDSUPDRS, MoCA, or MMSE in PD populations. Assessed bias and reporting quality
using COSMIN and STROBE-DOM guidelines. Geographic attribution by first-author
affiliation; gender classification via three-step validated procedure (κ=0.97).
Results: High-income countries: 98/108 (90.7%); low- and middle-income countries:
10/108 (9.3%). Regional distribution: Europe 44.4%, North America 36.1%, Asia 8.3%,
Africa 1.9%, South America 2.8%. Critical gaps in reporting: race/ethnicity 7.4%,
education adjustment 12.0%, medication state 3.7%, digital literacy 0%. Temporal
trends (1996–2024) show modest improvements in race/ethnicity reporting (0% to 11.1%,
p=0.019) and education adjustment (8.3% to 15.6%, p=0.048), but geographic concentration stagnant. Only 2 studies (1.9%) reported differential item functioning analysis.
Female authorship: 36.6%.
Conclusions: Validation literature demonstrates substantial high-income country concentration (90.7%) and critical reporting gaps, constraining measurement invariance assessment. The near-absence of differential item functioning analysis (1.9%) indicates
structural unpreparedness for measurement-invariance-aware validation. Recommendations target journals, funding agencies, professional societies, and researchers to advance
equitable, globally representative scale validation.

FAST POLARIZATION ANALYSIS BY NONLINEAR OPTICAL STOKES ELLIPSOMETERY (NOSE)

Such measurements have required a lengthy acquisition time, limiting the systems that can be investigated. An instrument allowing the probing of dynamic systems is desirable. Resulting data for NOSE measurements made on several dyes, crystalline films of sugars and amino acids have resulted in \chi tensors with an order of magnitude more precision than previous measurements in a fraction of the time required for mechanically rotated waveplates
A Unifying Theory of Branching Morphogenesis
\ua9 2017 The Author(s). The morphogenesis of branched organs remains a subject of abiding interest. Although much is known about the underlying signaling pathways, it remains unclear how macroscopic features of branched organs, including their size, network topology, and spatial patterning, are encoded. Here, we show that, in mouse mammary gland, kidney, and human prostate, these features can be explained quantitatively within a single unifying framework of branching and annihilating random walks. Based on quantitative analyses of large-scale organ reconstructions and proliferation kinetics measurements, we propose that morphogenesis follows from the proliferative activity of equipotent tips that stochastically branch and randomly explore their environment but compete neutrally for space, becoming proliferatively inactive when in proximity with neighboring ducts. These results show that complex branched epithelial structures develop as a self-organized process, reliant upon a strikingly simple but generic rule, without recourse to a rigid and deterministic sequence of genetically programmed events
Bronze Age tin-bronze metalwork assemblages in Kent: Composition, distribution and context
The main objectives of this thesis are to analyse and discuss Bronze Age tin-bronze assemblages in Kent, the study area, with focus on their composition, distribution and context.
The purpose of this thesis is largely in response to Professor Richard Bradleys following statement;
‘All too often, studies of such deposits have been concerned with content rather than context. This is a tradition that can be traced at least as far back as the work of Sir John Evans (1881). Since so little is known about the circumstance in which this material was deposited, it is perhaps a moot point whether such chronologies can be entirely reliable, but in the present account they are followed for want of anything better.’ (Bradley, 1998, 13)
The corpus of data comprises 66 assemblages identified in the subject area, given in Chapter 3 in the form of Datasheets and in the Appendices, in the form of graphs, a Compendium of Assemblages and maps. Comparisons are also made in relation to distribution alongside Bronze Age settlement, monuments and topographical data.
The thesis includes Methodology for collation of the corpus of research, followed by Distribution, Analysis, Assemblages in Retrospect and Current Thinking, Discussion and a Conclusion. The Discussion focuses on context of assemblages and metalworking from the subject area and the Bronze Age in northern Europe.
The Conclusion draws largely on the Analysis and data compiled from the Appendices, which have provided some fascinating and unexpected results that will hopefully provide further impetus for academic discussion and deliberation.
The thesis also recommends some further areas of research that would be of great benefit, particularly in the realm of non-destructive metallurgical analysis
Cook: The Man Who Taught Gertrude Stein to Drive
This is a sixty-minute voice-over film biography of the life of William Edwards Cook (1881-1959), an American expatriate artist, who grew up in Iowa, but spent his adult life in Europe, living in Paris, Rome, and Majorca. More specifically, it is a detailed account of the nearly life-long friendship of Cook with the American writer Gertrude Stein. It is based on her frequent adulation of him in her writings, as well as on the contents of 250 pages of their unpublished correspondence. Cook was never a well-known artist, but he did acquire some renown for two other reasons: In 1907, he was the first American artist to be allowed to paint a portrait of Pope Pius X. Later, in 1926, he used his inheritance to commission the then-unknown Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier to design an early Modernist home (the first true cubist house ) in Boulogne-sur-Seine, which is still intact, and widely known as Maison Cook or Villa Cook.
The friendship of Gertrude Stein and William Edwards Cook (including the roles of their partners, Alice B. Toklas and Jeanne Moallic Cook) was first documented in COOK BOOK: Gertrude Stein, William Cook and Le Corbusier (Bobolink Books, 2005). This video talk corrects, updates, and adds to the information in that book.
This film project (as well as the earlier book) was made possible by the earlier work of such Stein scholars as Ulla Dydo, Bruce Kellner, and Rosalind Moad, as well as the Stein / Cook correspondence in the collection of the Beinecke Library at Yale University.

Functionalised oximes : emergent precursors for carbon-, nitrogen- and oxygen-centred radicals
The author thanks EaStCHEM for financial support.Oxime derivatives are easily made, are non-hazardous and have long shelf lives. They contain weak N–O bonds that undergo homolytic scission, on appropriate thermal or photochemical stimulus, to initially release a pair of N- and O-centred radicals. This article reviews the use of these precursors for studying the structures, reactions and kinetics of the released radicals. Two classes have been exploited for radical generation; one comprises carbonyl oximes, principally oxime esters and amides, and the second comprises oxime ethers. Both classes release an iminyl radical together with an equal amount of a second oxygen-centred radical. The O-centred radicals derived from carbonyl oximes decarboxylate giving access to a variety of carbon-centred and nitrogen-centred species. Methods developed for homolytically dissociating the oxime derivatives include UV irradiation, conventional thermal and microwave heating. Photoredox catalytic methods succeed well with specially functionalised oximes and this aspect is also reviewed. Attention is also drawn to the key contributions made by EPR spectroscopy, aided by DFT computations, in elucidating the structures and dynamics of the transient intermediates.Peer reviewe
