Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has a key role in the development of Urdu language and literature since its inception. Dr. Abdul Ghaffar Shakeel (1929-2016) was one of those renowned linguists who performed their services at Urdu and Linguistics Department of AMU. This paper presents his linguistic writings with special reference to his two books on language and linguistics named Zaban-o-Masail-e-Zaban (1974) and Lisani-o-Tahqeeqi Mutalay (1975). Language, dialects, beginning of Urdu, Daccani Urdu, linguistic issues and future of language are some of his major linguistic writing areas. Some views related to structuralism and language derived from the concepts of Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) may also be observed in his writings. Furthermore, he focused on the social aspects of language. He also analyzed the development of Daccani Urdu from 1375 to 1746. The language formula comprised of Urdu and Hindi named Hindustani presented by Gandhi was also analyzed by Mr. Shakeel. He is of the view that the two languages are very different from each other especially at literary level. Through this article, his language thoughts have been analyzed on the basis of modern linguistic concepts

Loss-of-function of PGL10 impairs photosynthesis and tolerance to high-temperature stress in rice
High temperature (HT) affects the production of chlorophyll (Chl) pigment and inhibits cellular processes that impair photosynthesis, and growth and development in plants. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying heat stress in rice are not fully understood yet. In this study, we identified two mutants varying in leaf color from the ethylmethanesulfonate mutant library of indica rice cv. Zhongjiazao-17, which showed pale-green leaf color and variegated leaf phenotype under HT conditions. Mut-map revealed that both mutants were allelic, and their phenotype was controlled by a single recessive gene PALE GREEN LEAF 10 (PGL10) that encodes NADPH:protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase B, which is required for the reduction of protochlorophyllide into chlorophyllide in light-dependent tetrapyrrole biosynthetic pathway-based Chl synthesis. Overexpression-based complementation and CRISPR/Cas9-based knockout analyses confirmed the results of Mut-map. Moreover, qRT-PCR-based expression analysis of PGL10 showed that it expresses in almost all plant parts with the lowest expression in root, followed by seed, third leaf, and then other green tissues in both mutants, pgl10a and pgl10b. Its protein localizes in chloroplasts, and the first 17 amino acids from N-terminus are responsible for signals in chloroplasts. Moreover, transcriptome analysis performed under HT conditions revealed that the genes involved in the Chl biosynthesis and degradation, photosynthesis, and reactive oxygen species detoxification were differentially expressed in mutants compared to WT. Thus, these results indicate that PGL10 is required for maintaining chloroplast function and plays an important role in rice adaptation to HT stress conditions by controlling photosynthetic activity. We are highly grateful to Dr. Adil Abbas from China National Rice Research Institute, Hangzhou, China for supporting Dr. Shakeel Ahmad in the testing of transient localization of PGL10 in tobacco leaf epidermal cells and for providing Agrobacterium strain GV3101. We are also thankful to him for handling the mutant material during COVID-19 days. We appreciate the effort of Dr. Hafiz Mamoon Rehman from University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan, Dr. Rezwan Tariq from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia, and Nabeel Shaheen from University of Florida, USA for reviewing the manuscript. We acknowledge Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Beijing Government for providing a fully covered PhD scholarship to Dr. Shakeel Ahmad for conducting this research at China National Rice Research Institute. This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation ofChina (32188102, 32071991, and 31972961), the Science and Technol-ogy Program of Zhejiang Province (2020R51007), and the Key Researchand Development Program of Zhejiang Province (2022C02011)

Clinical decision support and training system for diagnosis and management of complete denture complaints
Background: Complete denture is considered one of the most challenging treatment modalities in dentistry. Any error occurs during any step of the complete denture fabrication can result in patient’s complaint. Troubleshooting complete denture complaints is very challenging for several reasons. First, all the teeth are connected into one denture base that is supported by a movable resilient mucosa make it difficult to isolate the errors. Second, one patient’s complaint could be due to several causes and at the same time one cause can lead to many patient’s complaints. Third, the diagnosis of each patient’s complaint must be approached systematically because adjusting the denture in a wrong spot may add another problem. Most of the complete denture treatment is provided by general dentists and depend only on their undergraduate training and clinical experience. There is a concern about the competency and level of skills of the undergraduate students in mastering the complete denture skills due to limited exposure to enough cases. The purpose of this research is to develop a new clinical decision support and training system to aid the general dentists and undergraduate students in diagnosis and management of complete denture complaints. Method: The new clinical decision support and training system was developed using Exsys Corvid Core software. The knowledge base of the system for the complete denture complaints, the complaints causes and the management protocol for each complaint were retrieved from the literature. The software was successfully loaded with 123 rules representing 48 patients’ complaints along with its detailed diagnostic methods and management protocol. After system development, the system was validated by ten expert prosthodontists using a survey questionnaire. The questionnaire results were statistically evaluated using Cronbach’s Alpha test. Results: The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficient was 0.847, which represent a good internal consistency. The validation questionnaire results showed that all ten prosthodontists agreed on the need of such system and its user friendliness. Also, all prosthodontists agreed that the system is a good tool to assist the general dentists and undergraduate students in diagnosis and management of complete denture complaints. 90% of the prosthodontist agreed with the knowledge base of the system for the complete denture complaints, the causes of each complaints and the management protocol for each complaint. Conclusion: The clinical decision support and training system to aid the general dentists and undergraduate students in diagnosis and management of complete denture complaints was developed. The overall agreement of the ten evaluating prosthodontists with the system indicates that the system was successfully developed.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Nabeel Munsh
Public perceptions of barriers to walk in urban areas of Lahore, Pakistan
Development strategies in urban areas of the less developed world are predominantly focused on motorized oriented planning which influenced the mobility practices of individuals. Previous literature has examined the suitability of an integrated public transport system and the potential of cycling in the cities of Pakistan, but walkability received less attention by researchers. To bridge this gap and to enhance the practice of walkability, this study investigates the public perceptions of individuals about walkability constraints in Lahore, Pakistan. A structured based questionnaire survey was conducted by using online platforms. A valid sample of 277 responses were analysed further with weighted factor and regression analysis technique to investigate pedestrian’s perceptions of walkability constraints respectively. Findings indicate pedestrians’ dissatisfaction with existing walking infrastructure is due to ignorance of walkability in transport plans, policies, and strategies executed by the government organizations. The integration of walkability has been highly neglected by transport planners and policymakers. Further, significant walkability constraints are elaborated that need to be resolved to enhance walkability in urban areas for the pedestrians of different age, gender, and income group
