Blurred Identities: Investigating Language and Memory as Locations of Identity and Culture in Amara Lakhous' Scontro di civiltà per un ascensore a Piazza Vittorio and Richard Rodriguez's Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez
While varied forms of migration have always existed, the last few\ud
decades have witnessed vast displacements and resettlements of\ud
many populations. World and ethnic wars, the dissolution of nations,\ud
environmental fluctuations, and the increasing wealth disparities\ud
between nations have all contributed to the growing number of exilic\ud
populations. In addition, the world has also contracted in its\ud
perceived expanse as a consequence of improved technologies,\ud
which have provided a facility of communication and mobility across\ud
borders. Thus exile, a term that has often been perceived as a\ud
unifying condition suffered by populations of ‘immigrants,’\ud
‘emigrants,’ ‘emigres,’and ‘refugees,’ has become an increasingly\ud
universal experience. Amara Lakhous and Richard Rodriguez, two\ud
authors who have encountered the liberties and constraints\ud
pertaining to the modern exile, have demonstrated their precarious\ud
condition of “in-betweenness” in their respective works. As modern\ud
exilic authors, they are concerned with the preservation of identity\ud
and cultural history in the face of a destination country that does not\ud
resemble their own and misunderstands the ‘other’. As they attempt\ud
to balance two opposing cultures, language and memory become\ud
crucial modes for both accessing the past and assimilating within the\ud
host culture. Lakhous and Rodriguez demonstrate that the exilic\ud
author is a classification under construction, which complicates the\ud
limited boundaries of nation and national literature, and the\ud
experience of migration
[Im]pure : Investigating the Relationship between Language and Nation in Amin Maalouf's Les Identites meurtrieres and Milan Kundera's Le Livre du rire et de l'oubli
Transnational writers have moved far beyond conventional notions of bilingual writing and have come to occupy a different status with regard to the role of the nation in determining\ud
personal identity. We must examine this significance of choosing a non-native language — in this essay French — in the face of a progressively more interconnected world. While the globalized and industrialized nature of the contemporary age, political and commercial concerns undoubtedly factor into an author's choice of writing language. This paper examines language as a mode of both representing an experience and commenting on the method of conveying that narrative. Amin Maalouf's Les Identites meurtrieres and Milan Kundera's Le Livre du rire et de l'oubli elucidate the essential multiplicity of perspectives and allegiances exemplified by the hybridized texts of transnational writers

Estetik Teorinin Ötesinde: Romantik Eleştiride Sanat ve Şiirin Tesellisi
“Beyond Aesthetic Theory: Consolations of Art and Poetry in Romantic Criticism” aims to illustrate how German Romantic critics confronted the political, philosophical, and moral challenges at the dawn of modernity and the enduring relevance of their responses for our times. The concept of time and the problem of its representation beyond metaphysical systems was a major preoccupation of both Romanticism and modernity. During the turbulent political and moral crises in the wake of the French Revolution, the early German Romantics (Frühromantiker) Friedrich Schlegel, Novalis, and Friedrich Schleiermacher, who collaborated on the short-lived journal, Athenäum (1798-1800), the major theoretical organ of German Romanticism, presented one of the earliest skeptical responses to the possibility of a first principle of philosophy. Human mortality generates the experience of being in time, of its passage, of loss and grief that cannot be cast in philosophical terms and do not belong to representation, thus precluding their reflection at the level of form. Ultimately, the burden of representing the unrepresentable, a burden that in Friedrich Schlegel’s view, emerges from the imperfections of philosophy, falls on art. At the very limit of representational certainties, art and poetry intimate the unsayable and negotiate the irreducible spaces between concept and representation. The Athenäum represents a novel mode of critical communication in employing the fragment as a philosophical form that extends into the work of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Walter Benjamin. It has also paved the way to Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutics and to poststructuralism by way of Nietzsche.“Estetik Teorinin Ötesinde: Romantik Eleştiride Sanat ve Şiirin Tesellisi” Alman romantik eleştirmenlerinin modernitenin şafağında politik, felsefi ve ahlâki zorluklarla nasıl yüzleştiklerini ve yanıtlarının zamanımızla kalıcı ilişkisini göstermeyi amaçlıyor.

Representation and its discontents: the critical legacy of German romanticism
Azade Seyhan provides a concise, elegantly argued introduction to the critical theory of German Romanticism and demonstrates how its approach to the metaphorical and linguistic nature of knowledge is very much alive in contemporary philosophy and literary theory. Her analysis of key thinkers such as Friedrich Schlegel and Novalis explores their views on rhetoric, systematicity, hermeneutics, and cultural interpretation. Seyhan examines German Romanticism as a critical intervention in the debates on representation, which developed in response to the philosophical revolution of German Idealism.Facing a chaotic political and intellectual landscape, the eighteenth-century theorists sought new models of understanding and new objectives for criticism and philosophy. Representation and Its Discontents identifies the legacy of this formative moment in modern criticism and suggests its relevance to contemporary discussions of post-structuralism, orientalism, theories of textuality, and the nature of philosophical discourse

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
