Flexible hybrid tribopiezoelectric generators for self-powering communicating sensors
The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) in all areas of society has led to a proliferation of low-power communicating sensors. In this context, triboelectric energy harvesting devices have recently been demonstrated with a high open-circuit voltage. However, the output current remains limited. In this work, a hybrid triboelectric-piezoelectric generator was proposed to simultaneously combine triboelectric and piezoelectric effects to improve the performance of the hybrid tribo-piezoelectric generator. The triboelectric generator is composed of the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) pair and carbon black charged polyurethane foam (PUC) playing a dual role: electropositive element (electron donor) and electrode. The hybrid generator was tested on two excitation systems: vibratory pot and blower. The determination of the triboelectric capacitance is one of the important topics because of its variability, which depends on the air gap between the PUC and the PTFE. With rectifier, and using two rectifier diode bridges, the shaker-mounted hybrid generator generates an open-circuit voltage of 318 V, a closed-circuit current of 4.95 μA, and a maximum power of 349 μW at an optimal impedance of 40 MΩ. An energy comparison at the same impedance confirms the power gain thanks to the hybrid coupling. This generator was used to power a communicating temperature sensor during several cycles of measurements/data transmissions

Connected piezoelectric sole for medical applications
The field of health, with these multiple disciplines, has undergone a great evolution, thanks to the integration of intelligent devices in the analysis and treatment of patients. Due to the proven relationships between gait disorders and some chronic diseases, such as Parkinson's or hemiplegia, the study of gait currently presents a major challenge in the medical sector. In this context, the thesis subject concerns the realization of a gait recording device for remote patient monitoring. The system in question is a connected sole consisting mainly of piezoelectric sensors in flexible thin layers (3 μm thick), developed in the IETR laboratory. These sensors are fabricated using a chemical deposition (CSD) process and commercial aluminum (Al) foil as the substrate. In order to increase the flexibility of the sensors and to facilitate its insertion into a shoe, the piezoelectric films are encapsulated by lamination in polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 250 μm) which will be cut into the shape of a sole. The exploitation of the information provided by the sensors goes through a data conversion stage, this mechanical study of the sensor makes it possible to convert the data from the sensor into force unit values, which the podiatrist can use. A wireless data recording and transmission system is integrated into the sole for the connected part of the device. The originality of this work lies both in the design approach of the device for monitoring gait, since it was carried out directly in consultation with a podiatrist, and in the portability of the device, which should eventually allow monitoring of a patient at home
Flexible aeroelectric micro-generators for self-powering communicating sensors
The advent of the Internet of Things has rendered the ambient energy harvesting a major issue for powering communicating microsystems. In this context, this work focuses on the development of a flexible piezoelectric micro-generator able to convert the mechanical energy from low airflows. The objective is to develop autonomous microsystems, or at least to extend their lifespan with energy harvesting. To harvest ambient energy, the flexible micro-generators are made of 3 μm-thick lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films encapsulated between polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films. The manufacturing process of the micro-generators has been optimized in order to increase their energy efficiency. Both the optimization of the electrode structure and the geometry of the generator made the maximum harvested power increase by a factor of 625. In this work, to characterize the energy harvesting, the micro-generators were excited with different systems (shaker, traction/compression system and wind tunnel). Thus, wind tunnel tests have shown that it was possible to harvest a power of 38 μW at 10 Hz when the generator was subjected to a low airflow (6 m/s). This generator allowed to power a communicating temperature sensor during several measurement/data transmission cycles
Study of flexible piezoelectric thin films for vibration energy harvesting
New methods for energy generation based on the ambient energy harvesting are required for autonomous sensors development and their applications in the “smartcities”. In this context, N-air-J project aims to realize micro-generators based on flexible piezoelectric films, able to harvest energy from the breeze. The work presented in this thesis is about the deposition of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin layer on aluminium thin foil. Structural, dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric characterizations were realized. The generator optimization is focused on the PZT transfer from aluminium to polymer substrate. The technological process has been developed for the transfer. The use of an insulating and elastic substrate is very interesting for the realization of an interdigitated (IDE) electrode configuration. Energy harvesting properties of the two configurations, PZT/Al and PZT/polymer, were tested. Energy densities were found similar to those of more rigid structures presented in the literature. The use of the IDE confirms its great interest by delivering a voltage of several tens of volts. An analytical model was developed to study the behaviour of the piezoelectric beam used in this work. Experimental studies quantify the influence of air friction on the beam vibratory behaviour. Fluid-structure interaction simulation has demonstrated the possibility for improving the deformations of several beams in a generators network
Ultra light tunable capacitor based on PZT thin film deposited onto aluminium foil
International audienceLead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films with a Zr/Ti ratio of 57/43, elaborated by a derived sol-gel process, have been deposited onto bare and RuO2 coated aluminium substrate 16 μm thick. Commercial aluminium foil presents many advantages as ultra light weight (43 g m−2), conformability, conduction, can be easily cut, and is one of the cheapest substrates used for PZT thin films deposition (<0.1$ m-2). XRD measurements have shown a well crystallized PZT in the perovskite structure and ferroelectric behaviour has also been observed. By the use of a RuO2 film 100 nm thick at the PZT/aluminium interface, the coercive field and tunability values have been strongly improved despite an increase of the dielectric losses. The lead excess introduced in the precursor solution has been increased up to 65 % in order to lower the crystallization temperature of the PZT around 560 °C and tunability has been studied as a function of annealing time and temperature
Influence of the process parameters on the structural and electric properties of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric PZT thin films realized on stainless steel by a Sol-gel derived method
International audiencePbxZryTi1−yO3 thin films were prepared by a modified Sol–gel method using alkoxides precursor compounds and spin-coating onto RuO2 coated stainless steel substrates. Depending on the zirconate/titanate ratio, both, ferroelectric and antiferroelectric behaviour has been obtained. Oxidation of the metal substrate due to the PZT crystallization process was studied in order to verify the influence of the heat treatment on the substrate morphology. In order to improve the properties of antiferroelectric PbxZr0.95Ti0.05O3, the influence of the lead excess in the composition was investigated. Thefs dependence of the switching field distribution from the annealing time and temperature, as well as the fatigue behaviour of the films, is discussed
