Edy Setyawan: Tracking the giant manta ray with a miniPAT tag

    No full text
Oceanic manta ray (Mobula birostris) is the world’s largest ray with a wingspan up to 700 cm. Very little is known about their presence and residency in New Zealand waters. Satellite tracking using a miniPAT (12.4 cm in length) allows us to track the movements of this highly migratory species. The miniPAT (on the lower right dorsum of this ray) was deployed in the Hauraiki Gulf in the summer 2021. After tracking for 6 months, this cutting-edge technology showed that this filter feeder undertook long-distance migration to warm tropical waters in southern Fiji as the summer ended in New Zealand.  This image was uploaded for the SGS Research Showcase 2022.   Choose your favourite image for the SGS Research Showcase People's Choice Award: Research Image category.</p

Edy Setyawan: Take a deep breath: conserving manta rays through photo-ID

    No full text
Did you know that manta rays can be distinguished between individuals? Through photographic identification (photo-ID), individual manta rays can be recognised by the unique and unchanging natural spot patterns on their ventral surface, like a fingerprint. This non-invasive photo-ID methodology has been widely used to elucidate the population structure and biology of manta rays throughout their range. Here, Orgenes Ambafen, a highly skillful free diver, took a deep breath and submerged below a melanistic reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) to photograph the underside of this vulnerable species during a manta survey in Raja Ampat, Indonesia. This poster was uploaded for the SGS Research Showcase 2021.Choose your favourite image to win the People's Choice Award at the 2021 SGS Research Showcase: https://auckland.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dmt3L5qN0E5UIKO</div

A non-invasive, rapid, accurate, and affordable technique to measure the size of surface-feeding reef manta raysusing small drones. The drones are also very useful in determining the sex and maturity of reef manta rays. Importantly, all of these were undertaken with minimal and limited impact tothis vulnerable species.Choose your favourite poster to win the People's Choice Award at the 2021 SGS Research Showcase: https://auckland.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9Fw8Omf43pstYU

The FORA Framework - A Fuzzy Grassroots Ontology for Online Reputation Management

    No full text
Online reputation management deals with monitoring and influencing the online record of a person, an organization or a product. The Social Web offers increasingly simple ways to publish and disseminate personal or opinionated information, which can rapidly have a disastrous influence on the online reputation of some of the entities. The author focuses on the Social Web and possibilities of its integration with the Semantic Web as resource for a semi-automated tracking of online reputations using imprecise natural language terms. The inherent structure of natural language supports humans not only in communication but also in the perception of the world. Thereby fuzziness is a promising tool for transforming those human perceptions into computer artifacts. Through fuzzy grassroots ontologies, the Social Semantic Web becomes more naturally and thus can streamline online reputation management. For readers interested in the cross-over field of computer science, information systems, and social sciences, this book is an ideal source for becoming acquainted with the evolving field of fuzzy online reputation management in the Social Semantic Web area.
