“The special law” on the environmental conservation of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan and governmental basic plan for the environmental conservation of the sea based on the law were both revised recently in 2015. Two major aims of the previous basic plan (1. conservation of water quality, 2. conservation of natural landscape) were reformed to broaden four new major aims (1. conservation and restoration of coastal environment, 2. conservation and appropriate management of water quality, 3. conservation of natural and cultural landscapes, 4. sustainable utilization of fish resources) in the revised basic plan. Historically, environmental management policy of the Seto Inland Sea had firstly made emphasis on water pollution control such as total pollution load control (TPLC). However, this kind of passive conservation policy is gradually being sifted recently to active conservation such as Satoumi which includes restoration of biodiversity, biological productivity, habitat and well balanced nutrient cycle between land and sea. Holistic approaches such as integrated coastal management (ICM), ecosystem-based management (EBM) and adaptive management were incorporated into new policy in Japan. These clear changes of management policies of the Seto Inland Sea will make change more detailed policy of every related prefecture and hence will promote Satoumi activities in near future.</jats:p

Storm surge in the Seto Inland Sea accompanied by Typhoons in 2004

    No full text
In 2004, Seto Inland Sea coast suffered severe damages of storm surge. This area never experienced storm surge damage in recent half century and people were not ready for the storm surge. In two typhoons of T0416 and T0418, surge anomaly were more than 150cm in Bisan-Seto area. Storm surges appeared after the maximum approach of typhoon not only due to surface low pressure but also due to wind stress as westerly. Because of geographical complexity of Seto Inland Sea, the surge process have not been well understood. Therefore, it is necessary to study the effects of the wind and the surface pressure using a numerical model. Atmospheric model MM5 and ocean model POM were used as a numerical experiment, including the astronomical tide model NAO. As the results of numerical simulation of the storm surge, atmospheric conditions were well simulated but ocean model was rather complex. There are a lot of island in Seto Inland Sea and sea water movement in the model was very much influenced by the topography and wind stress effect appeared much smaller. In the no-island model, storm surge height was a little improved. However the simulated surge height was still less than the observed height. Further improvement of the ocean model application should be considered in future studies

According to Lakoff and Johnson, metaphor is language found in everyday life, not only language but also thoughts and actions. Metaphor is also figurative language often found in written literary works such as novels. This research focuses on the types of metaphors applied in the novel and the purpose of applying the metaphors, with a metaphor approach based on Lakoff and Johson's 1980 conceptual metaphor theory. Through qualitative method analysis, this research explores the novel The Setting Sun by Osamu Dazai in 1947, the story of which is set in a noble family experiencing bankruptcy and a moral crisis after World War II. Each story journey in the novel turns out to have similarities with real life, with the author of the novel experiencing a novel crisis after isolating himself from his family and after World War II, experiencing a moral crisis such as depression since his teenage years. The author of the novel The Setting Sun 1947 experienced depression and even expressed his heart through his work which he experienced in his life and daily life. He expressed it in his work, including the novel The Setting Sun 1947. He wanted deep in his heart help to rise in every novel he wrote, including the novel The Setting Sun. Even though Dazai lost his mind by committing suicide, all his hopes and the peak of his regrets can be conveyed in the novel The Setting Sun 1947. This novel functions as a worldview that can understand the language of people who want to convey something but don't believe in themselves so they use sentences that have hidden meaning so as not to harm anyone's life. Osamu Dazai in his novel emphasizes that awareness and mental strength are important because not everyone can understand someone's private language. Osamu Dazai leaves many hidden sentences in his novel whose meaning must be resolved using a metaphorical approach because Osamu Dazai wrote the contents of his novel based on his daily life experiences
