The impact of rural emptiness on gender relations in postsocialist Albania
This paper explores impacts of dramatic levels of outmigration from Puka, a remote region of northern Albania. Since 1991 depopulation, economic decline and state withdrawal have created conditions of what Dzenovska calls rural emptiness. Drawing on focus group discussions with women from eight villages, it explores how conditions of rural emptiness have led to a transformation of gender contracts, with women taking on additional responsibilities. However these changes have been accommodated within a re-traditionalised patriarchal system through the devaluation of tasks assigned to women, their increased surveillance by male relatives, and erosion of women’s social life outside the household
Information Gap Activities to Enhance Speaking Skills of Elementary Level Students
AbstractSpeaking is considered as one of the most essential means of effective communication. Teaching English-speaking skills to elementary level students at university is especially challenging. The most demanding issue for teachers is how to assist students to apply the knowledge learned in the class to real-life situations. The biggest problem with low-level proficiency students is that they lack motivation and confidence when they speak. They are usually very silent and passive. They hesitate to answer any question or take self-initiative when needed to participate in class activities. Second, most students lack the vocabulary. Students are not able to bring their ideas and also comprehend the information well because they have very limited vocabulary and are not able to pronounce the words well.In many studies, students speaking competences have been shown to be influenced by their exposure to the target language. Having this in mind, teachers should create and use activities that will be authentic, up-to-date, that will be fun and motivate students, so that they can actively be engaged in the learning process. One of the speaking activities that promotes communication competences is Information Gap activities. In these activities, students have to use the target vocabulary to share the information. This paper aims at examining the methodological strategies that Information Gap technique provides and its effectiveness to increase speaking competence. The paper will describe the implementation of Information Gap activities to the elementary level students and its impact to the students speaking performance. The Information Gap techniques are activities that are designed practicing on specific items of language and short sentences. The research results revealed that the use of Information Gap activities helped students improve their speaking skills. After the implementation of these activities, students felt more confident to speak in English; they were enthusiastic in doing the activities; and their motivation for learning and using the language improved
The Role of Video Materials in EFL Classrooms
AbstractThe rapid growth of technology has brought many innovations in education and especially in language teaching. In order to offer and create successful classes language teachers, especially English language teachers are using different audio-visual tools to facilitate the teaching process, besides textbooks and other interesting and engaging activities, which ensure student centeredness, autonomy, interaction and connectivity to a certain theme, and videos such as: movies, songs, power point presentations are widely used in EFL classrooms. This paper first attempts to explore the goals of using video material in EFL classrooms and the advantages of using video materials in EFL teaching, on the basis of which proposes a framework of teaching principles, strategies and specific tips which facilitate EFL teaching. Then will bring theories and practice related to the use of audio- visual tools in language learning especially in ESP classes at a university level and the reason why videos can be considered as valuable pedagogical tools, to facilitate the teaching process. The purpose of this study is to investigate the benefits that the language teachers and learners get in using audio-visual aids in teaching and learning the English language, as well as to show that by using the appropriate video material the teachers can improve and ensure student- centeredness, have their students interested and engaged in activities, be more active, motivated and confident in their communicative language competence

In this thesis, the author shades light on the values of care and democracy in kindergartens in Kosovo. The purpose of this assignment is to find out how three kindergarten teachers in Kosovo safeguard the values and care in the kindergarten they work in. It is in recent years that kindergartens in Kosovo have started to make sense to sociaty and families. There is a lot of research on the values of care and democracy in the Nordic countries and the author believed that there will be differences and inequalities if the research can happen in Kosovo
Generalized hydro-mechanically coupled hypoplastic constitutive model for unsaturated collapsible soils
In this paper, a generalized hypoplastic constitutive model for unsaturated soils based on the work of Fuentes and Triantafyllidis [2013] is presented. The constitutive model is formulated in terms of effective stresses, degree of saturation and suction. The main feature of the model is a Limiting Surface (LS) which describes the maximum achievable void ratio as a function of mean effective stress and degree of saturation. The LS allows to capture the wetting-induced collapse of initially unsaturated soils. The performance of the proposed model is demonstrated by backcalculation of a well-documented experimental study on over 30 samples of compacted Pearl clay by Sun et al. [2004] under isotropic as well as triaxial loading conditions. For this purpose, the proposed model is coupled with a hypoplastic model for the soil-water retention curve, which interrelates the effective degree of saturation with the suction and the void ratio. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page.
Lean on kokonaisvaltainen palvelun kehittämiseen tähtäävä näkemys, jossa poistetaan hukkaa, lisätään asiakkaalle arvoa tuottavien työvaiheiden osuutta ja tavoitellaan tasalaatuista yhdessä sovittuun tavoitteeseen tähtäävää palvelua.
The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the process of arranging 24-hour care for the elderly in Järvenpää and to find out the development targets in it. The aim was to develop the customer-oriented approach and fluency in the process of arranging 24-hour care for the elderly, and to create a new kind of understanding of the development work using Lean thinking. The idea was born from the thesis author`s own interest, but also proposed by the representatives of the city of Järvenpää.
Lean is a development method that was created in the Toyota car factory to enhance production which has since spread, for example, into health care. Lean is a comprehensive development-oriented service approach, which eliminates waste, increases stages that bring value to the customer and pursues a consistent quality of service, which has a jointly agreed target.
The thesis was conducted using the action research method with three stages of development: a description of the current state, a practical implementation and a final evaluation. The development task of the description of the current state was to find out what kind of a process it is to arrange 24-hour care from the perspective of customer orientation and fluency. It was studied through a directed staff survey and participatory observation. In the practical implementation the development was innovated and implemented. The development task of this stage was to identify how the process can be developed using Lean thinking. At the final evaluation the development task was to find out what kind of experiences arose about the development activities using participatory observation and reflection.
In the description of the current state it was found that customer orientation and the fluency of the process can be developed by increasing knowledge, clarifying the stages of the process, ensuring cooperation, developing a service needs assessment and case management and strengthening customer involvement. Using Lean thinking the selected development activities were improvement of knowledge and transparency, identifying value-generating steps and the achievement of mutual understanding. To improve knowledge and transparency, the steps of arranging 24-hour care were described step by step in a customer brochure and process flow diagrams. A value stream mapping workshop was held in order to identify the value-generating steps and to achieve a common understanding.
Lean thinking helped clarify the essential development needs of the customer orientation and fluency in the process. Written materials in the thesis were considered to be of particular use to service needs assessment and orientation of new staff. By value stream mapping, the staff felt they saw things that affect the customer oriented approach and fluency of the process more broadly and their joint reflection was considered to be productive. As follow-up research it would be interesting to find out whether Lean thinking produced a new kind of development and did it lead to new operating models in the process
Experimental investigation and constitutive modeling of the behaviour of highly plastic Lower Rhine Clay under monotonic and cyclic loading
A new experimental series on the highly plastic (I_P = 34 %) Lower Rhine Clay (LRC) is presented. The study comprises tests on normally as well as over consolidated samples under monotonic and cyclic loading. The loading velocity has been varied in order to evaluate the strain rate dependency of the LRC behaviour testifying i.a. the well-known reduction of undrained shear strength with decreasing displacement rate. Isotropic consolidation followed by a cyclic loading with constant deviatoric stress amplitude leads to a failure due to large strain amplitudes with eight-shaped effective stress paths in the final phase of the tests. The inherent anisotropy has been additionally evaluated using samples cut out in either the vertical or the horizontal direction. Furthermore, the behaviour of LRC is compared with the behaviour of low plastic Kaolin silt (I_P = 12:2 %). A new visco-hypoplastic-type constitutive model with a historiotropic yield surface has been used to simulate some of the experiments with cyclic loading. Even the eight-shaped stress loops at cyclic mobility are reproduced well with this model. The data of this paper can be also used by other researchers for the examination, calibration, improvement or development of constitutive models dedicated to fine-grained soils under monotonic and cyclic loading. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. La prima tesi di laurea italiana in tema di sci e responsabilità civile = The first Italian dissertation on skiing and civil liability
In the academic year 1969-70 Gianfranco de Bertolini’s JD disseration on “La responsabilità civile nell’infortuio sciistico” [Civil Liability and Ski Accidents] was, for what it can be today ascertained looking into bibliographical resources and data bases, the first piece of scholarship dealing with the (then) timidly raising issue of the allocation of damages for accidents occurring on the Italian ski slopes. Almost 45 years later, this dissertation deserves to be republished in digital form and made available in open access on the WEB for at least two reasons. First, it has clearly an historical importance for those who study what today has become a field of anlysis routinely debated in court, giving rise to a boosting litigation. Secondly, the reader will find in this early piece of scholarship a sharp analysis on a host of legal arguments, central for the development of the law of civil liability on the ski slopes, which emerged in legal scholarship and in case law only in the 80’s, to confirm the accuracy and inventive of the (then) young author.
