    String Phenomenology 2019

Whether string theory admits a multiverse of de Sitter solutions that look approximately like our universe is a hotly debated current topic. I will overview the basics of landscape constructions and explain my view on this question. I will also outline a possible construction of de Sitter solutions

    Non-linear supersymmetry and T T¯-like flows

The TT¯ deformation of a supersymmetric two-dimensional theory preserves the original supersymmetry. Moreover, in several interesting cases the deformed theory possesses additional non-linearly realized supersymmetries. We show this for certain N = (2, 2) models in two dimensions, where we observe an intriguing similarity with known N = 1 models in four dimensions. This suggests that higher-dimensional models with non-linearly realized supersymmetries might also be obtained from TT¯ -like flow equations. We show that in four dimensions this is indeed the case for N = 1 Born-Infeld theory, as well as for the Goldstino action for spontaneously broken N = 1 supersymmetry

    Sequential Flows by Irrelevant Operators

    Get PDF
We explore whether one can TTT \overline{T} deform a collection of theories that are already TTT \overline{T}-deformed. This allows us to define classes of irrelevant deformations that know about subsystems. In some basic cases, we explore the spectrum that results from this procedure and we provide numerical evidence in favor of modular invariance. We also study the flow of the classical Lagrangian for free bosons and free fermions under successive deformations. Some of the models found by sequentially flowing are likely to have interesting holographic interpretations.Comment: 41 pages; LaTe

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The Higgs Branch of Impurity Theories

    Get PDF
We consider supersymmetric gauge theories with impurities in various dimensions. These systems arise in the study of intersecting branes. Unlike conventional gauge theories, the Higgs branch of an impurity theory can have compact directions. For models with eight supercharges, the Higgs branch is a hyperKähler manifold given by the moduli space of solutions of certain differential equations. These equations are the dimensional reductions of self-duality equations with boundary conditions determined by the impurities. They can also be interpreted as Nahm transforms of self-duality equations on toroidally compactified spaces. We discuss the application of our results to the light-cone formulation of Yang-Mills theories and to the solution of certain N=2 d=4 gauge theories

M-theory and type IIA flux compactifications

    No full text
We consider compactifications of M-theory and type IIA string theory to four dimensions. For Minkowski space-time, a supergravity no-go theorem forbids flux supported in the internal space. We show how to evade this no-go theorem by exhibiting new sources of brane charge: in string theory, the basic physical phenomenon is the generation of new brane charges from D-branes in transverse fluxes. In M-theory, there is a new source of M5-brane charge from novel higher derivative couplings that involve fluxes as well as curvatures. We present some explicit orientifold examples with both N=1 and N=2 space-time supersymmetry. Finally, we explain the status of massive type IIA flux compactifications
