Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Software livre/open source vs. software proprietário na educação: o caso de estudo de uma escola do 2.º e 3.º ciclos.

Assim, diversos tipos de utilização de software como o software livre, open source, freeware ou software as a service estão atualmente disponíveis para além do software proprietário.
A par das tendências da utilização de software livre/open source a nível internacional, em Portugal tem também havido diversas recomendações na adoção deste tipo de software na Administração Pública e, em particular, nas Escolas. Nesse contexto, diversos benefícios têm sido associados à utilização de software livre/open source, nomeadamente poupança em termos de custos de aquisição de licenças, maior rentabilização do hardware existente, liberdade de utilização e possibilidade de partilha do código e independência em relação aos fabricantes de software.
Este trabalho retrata uma experiência de utilização de software livre/open source numa Escola Básica do 2º e 3º ciclos, envolvendo alunos da disciplina de Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação. Com a investigação realizada, pretendeu-se aferir se a utilização de software livre/open source condicionaria os objetivos e resultados de aprendizagem dos alunos visados, versus a situação de utilização de software proprietário.The widespread use of the Internet and the evolution of the Web boosted new paradigms in the use and adoption of software. Thus, in addition to proprietary software, several types of software use and adoption are currently available such as free software, open source, freeware and software as a service.
In line with the international trends of free/open source software usage, in Portugal there has also been a number of recommendations in the adoption of this type of software in the Public Administration and, in particular, in Schools. In this context, several benefits have been associated with the use of free/open source software, including savings in license acquisition costs, better use of existing hardware, freedom of code use, code sharing and independence from software manufacturers.
This work describes a free/open source software usage experience in a Basic School of the 2nd and 3rd cycles levels of education, involving students of the Information and Communication Technologies course. Business intelligence no apoio ao controlo de gestão: o caso de uma empresa do setor automóvel
No full textEste trabalho tem como objetivo a implementação de uma solução de Business Intelligence
(BI) numa empresa do Setor Automóvel - a Lusilectra, S.A., e foi realizado tendo como base o
período de estágio realizado pelo autor na empresa.
Dando continuidade a um estudo realizado na empresa que discutiu a pertinência da utilização
de uma solução de BI de apoio ao controlo de gestão, este trabalho explora em termos práticos
o impacto da utilização do BI nesse contexto, endereçando os problemas de falta de integração
de dados e informação nas ferramentas de controlo de gestão e sistemas de gestão empresariais
utilizados à data pela empresa.
Como alicerce do trabalho é apresentada uma revisão bibliográfica dos sistemas de Business
Intelligence, a função de controlo de gestão e a integração destes conceitos.
A solução apresentada consiste num sistema de BI que integra diversas fontes de dados através
da utilização de técnicas de Extração, Transformação e Carregamento (ETL), permite a análise
multidimensional dos dados através de um Data Warehouse e a monitorização dos KPIs identificados
em visualizações interativas em dashboards, facilitando a análise de grandes volumes de
dados e promovendo uma gestão mais eficiente e fundamentada.
O trabalho reforça a necessidade de uma abordagem integrada que alie a utilização de tecnologia
a instrumentos de gestão de estratégia empresarial e discute o impacto da implementação da
solução na melhoria da eficiência operacional e na qualidade das decisões de gestão, evidenciando
como o BI pode transformar dados brutos em informações relevantes que suportam a tomada de
decisão organizacional.This work aims to implement a Business Intelligence (BI) solution in a company in the Automotive
Sector - Lusilectra, S.A., and was carried out based on the author’s training placement in
the company.
Continuing a study carried out in the company that discussed the relevance of using a BI
solution to support management control, this work explores in practical terms the impact of using
a BI system in this context, addressing the problems of lack of data integration and information in
the management control tools and enterprise management systems used by the company.
A literature survey is set up as the groundwork for the study, which reviews Business Intelligence
systems, the management control function and the integration of these concepts.
The presented solution consists of a BI system that integrates several data sources through the
use of Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL) techniques, allows multidimensional analysis
of data through a DataWarehouse and the monitoring of the identified KPIs through interactive
visualizations in dashboards, enhancing the analysis of large volumes of data and promoting more
efficient and informed management.
The work reinforces the need for an integrated approach that combines the use of technology
with business strategy management tools and discusses the impact of implementing the solution
on improving operational efficiency and the quality of management decisions, highlighting how
BI can transform raw data into valuable information that supports organizational decision-making

As oportunidades de investigação na Ciência da Web são inúmeras. Em particular, a implementação da Web Semântica nas Empresas é ainda um tema pouco explorado e encontra-se numa fase precoce de implementação.
Este trabalho apresenta a relevância do estudo da Web Semântica nas Empresas e propõe um modelo para facilitar e guiar a implementação desta tecnologia nas organizações. O modelo permite, numa primeira fase, analisar e determinar o grau de adoção da Web Semântica nas Empresas e, numa fase complementar, servir como guia, propondo um conjunto de recomendações e sistematizando o caminho a seguir para uma adoção mais rápida e intensiva.
Utilizando-se a metodologia de Investigação-Ação, delineou-se um trabalho de intervenção num conjunto de empresas em que se analisa a utilização atual da tecnologia, se propõem ações que promovem a sua implementação e se avaliam progressivamente os resultados obtidos.The current Web generation embraces the original technology that generated the Web of documents, the evolution that turned it ubiquitous and created the social Web, and the technology that can generate the Web of data, the Semantic Web.
There are plenty of research opportunities within Web Science. In particular, the implementation of Semantic Web in enterprises is still a relatively unexplored subject and at an early stage of implementation.
This thesis presents the relevance of the study of Semantic Web in enterprises and proposes a model to facilitate and guide the implementation of this technology in organizations. The model allows, in a first stage, to analyze and determine the degree of adoption of the Semantic Web in enterprises and, in a complementary stage , is used as a guide, proposing a set of recommendations and systematizing the way forward to a faster and more intensive adoption.
Using the methodology of Research-Action, an intervention in a group of enterprises was outlined in which the current use of the technology is analysed, actions, to promote its implementation are proposed and results obtained are progressively evaluated
