Local pO2 study in murine tumors
Before ITPP treatment, animals were randomized into two groups (ITPP or Saline). In one set of experiments (4T1 tumors, mice injected with 3 ITPP doses), animals were additionally randomized based on preliminary pO2 level in the tumor, to equalize normoxic and hypoxic tumors population.
Four different protocols of ITPP treatments were studied. 4T1 tumors were subjected to either 3 (8, 12 and 16 days after tumor inoculation, 1.5 g/kg, IP) or 4 (8, 9, 15, 16 days after tumor inoculation, 1.5 g/kg, IP) doses of ITPP. B16F10 tumors were treated with 6 ITPP injections on either 5, 6, 11, 12, 17, 18 or 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20 days after tumor inoculation, all as an intraperitoneal dose of 2 g/kg. These treatment protocols were designed based on earlier results by Tran et al. and pilot experiments. The treatment schedules were adjusted to the tumor growth rate.
Mice were randomized into two groups based on ITPP or saline (control, vehicle for ITPP) administration for each protocol: 4T1 tumors treated with 3ITPP doses: N=10 for ITPP and N=10 for control; 4 ITPP doses protocol N=10 for ITPP group and N=9 for saline-treated animals; for B16F10 tumors received six doses at day 5,6,11,12,17,18 there were N=11 for ITPP and N=7 for the control group; second 6 dose protocol (injections at day 5,6,12,13,19,20) has N=6 for ITPP group and N=5 for saline-treated animals.
In vivo EPR measurements were conducted at L-band (Bruker Elexsys-II E540, Germany) CW EPR spectrometer using a surface coil (Bruker, Germany). A high-resolution ultrasound (US) imaging system designed for small experimental animals (Visual Sonics Vevo 2100, Canada) with an MS-550D transducer with a center operating frequency of 22–55 MHz was used for ultrasound measurements of 4T1 tumors. To better understand ITPP effects on tissue oxygenation, tumors were classified based on local pO2 values before treatment as normoxic (>10 mmHg) or hypoxic (<10 mmHg). Additionally, to investigate changes in tumor oxygenation during the experimental time, each local pO2 value for the selected time point was classified as normoxic (N) and hypoxic (H)

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
Identification and Biological Evaluation of a Water-Soluble Fullerene Nanomaterial as BTK Kinase Inhibitor
Introduction: Thanks to recent advances in synthetic methodology, water-soluble fullerene nanomaterials that interfere with biomolecules, especially DNA/RNA and selected proteins, have been found with tremendous potential for applications in nanomedicine. Herein, we describe the synthesis and evaluation of a water-soluble glycine-derived [60]fullerene hexakisadduct (HDGF) with Th symmetry, which is a first-in-class BTK protein inhibitor. Methods: We synthesized and characterized glycine derived [60]fullerene using NMR, ESI-MS, and ATR-FT-IR. DLS and zeta potential were measured and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observations were performed. The chemical composition of the water-soluble fullerene nanomaterial was examined by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry. To observe aggregate formation, the cryo-TEM analysis was carried out. The docking studies and molecular dynamic simulations were performed to determine interactions between HDGF and BTK. The in vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated on RAJI and K562 blood cancer cell lines. Subsequently, we examined the induction of cell death by autophagy and apoptosis by determining the expression levels of crucial genes and caspases. We investigated the direct association of HDGF on inhibition of the BTK signalling pathway by examining changes in the calcium levels in RAJI cells after treatment. The inhibitory potential of HDGF against non-receptor tyrosine kinases was evaluated. Finally, we assessed the effects of HDGF and ibrutinib on the expression of the BTK protein and downstream signal transduction in RAJI cells following anti-IgM stimulation. Results: Computational studies revealed that the inhibitory activity of the obtained [60]fullerene derivative is multifaceted: it hampers the BTK active site, interacting directly with the catalytic residues, rendering it inaccessible to phosphorylation, and binds to residues that form the ATP binding pocket. The anticancer activity of produced carbon nanomaterial revealed that it inhibited the BTK protein and its downstream pathways, including PLC and Akt proteins, at the cellular level. The mechanistic studies suggested the formation of autophagosomes (increased gene expression of LC3 and p62) and two caspases (caspase-3 and −9) were responsible for the activation and progression of apoptosis. Conclusion: These data illustrate the potential of fullerene-based BTK protein inhibitors as nanotherapeutics for blood cancer and provide helpful information to support the future development of fullerene nanomaterials as a novel class of enzyme inhibitors

during the period September 1975 through May 1976 is presented. During this nine month
internship the author worked as an Engineer II in the Industrial Processes discipline of this
large consulting engineering firm... The author's prime responsibility was as one of three
lead design engineers on the design of a large wastewater treatment facility for a pulp mill
in Hoquiam, Washington owned by ITT Rayonier Inc. The work generally consisted of the design
of individual treatment units and associated piping and pumping. The purpose of the project
was to provide wastewater treatment capabilities that would satisfy the effluent limitations
(standards) imposed upon the mill by the State of Washington Department of Ecology and the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The author's assignment also entailed necessary
interaction with the project manager and other CH���M HILL design engineers and support staff
members, the client's representatives, and representatives of two other consulting engineering
firms working on the project. Thus, the internship position at CH���M HILL provided considerable
experience coordinating the author's work with the work of other engineers, guiding the design
and administrative efforts of a support staff, and interacting regularly with the client and
other consulting firms. This broad exposure to a variety of engineering and organizational
problems provided a valuable educational experience
Transition to turbulence in a qblique shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction at M=15
Direct numerical simulations are carried out for different forcing techniques to trigger transition during the interaction between an oblique shock-wave and a laminar boundary-layer at M = 1.5. Three forcing methods are used: a) forcing of oblique unstable modes, whose shape and behaviour are determined by the local linear stability theory, b) broadband free-stream acoustic disturbances, and c) a cold plasma flow control device. While the oblique-mode breakdown is dominant for low-amplitude forcing, long streaky structures drive the transition process in a high-amplitude disturbance environment. LES are also performed on the experimental setup by the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ITAM) from Novosibirsk State University with cold plasma actuation. As well as the disturbance type, the effect of Reynolds number and forcing amplitude will be investigated
