Phase behavior and structure identification of the mixed chlorinated hydrocarbon clathrate hydrates

    No full text
The primary objective of this research is to verify thermodynamic feasibility for recovering chlorinated hydrocarbons (CH2Cl2, CCl4, and CH3CCl3) from aqueous solutions using clathrate hydrate formation with guest gases of CO2 and CH4. First, the four-phase (H-L-W-L-CHC-V) clathrate hydrate equilibria of the ternary CO2 (CH4) + water + chlorinated hydrocarbon (CHC) systems were measured at various temperature and pressure conditions and particularly up to the upper quadruple point for the CO2-containing solutions. The inclusion of CHCs in the clathrate hydrate lattice greatly reduced the clathrate hydrate-forming pressure at a given temperature, which confirmed the mixed CHC clathrate hydrates to be more stabilized than the pure CO2 (CH4) clathrate hydrate. The structure of the mixed CHC clathrate hydrates was newly identified as sII through NMR and Raman spectroscopies, and the quantitative analysis results were directly used for determining both small and large cage occupancies. From spectroscopic results of the mixed CHC clathrate hydrates, it was found that the large guest molecules of chlorinated hydrocarbons exclusively occupied the large sII 5(12)6(4) cages and thus restricted CH4 molecules predominantly to the small sII 5(12) cages. The highlight feature of this study is that the basic information drawn from both phase behavior and structure-related properties of cage occupancies might play a key role in understanding the phenomenological characteristics of the mixed CHC clathrate hydrates composed of multiguest molecules. This research was performed for the Greenhouse Gas Research Center, one of the Critical Technology-21 Programs, funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Korea and also partially supported by the Brain Korea 21 Project

Hydrate phase equilibria of the ternary CH4+NaCl plus water, CO2+NaCl plus water and CH4+CO2 plus water mixtures in silica gel pores

Hydrate phase equilibria for the ternary CH4 + NaCl + water and CO2 + NaCl + water mixtures in 15.0 nm silica gel pores and for the ternary CH4 + CO2 + water mixtures of various CO2 vapor compositions (20, 40, 60 and 80 mol %) in silica gel pores of nominal diameters 6.0, 15.0, and 30.0 nm were experimentally measured and compared with the calculated results based on van der Waals and Platteeuw model. At a specified temperature, three phase H-L-W-V equilibrium curves of pore hydrates were shifted to a higher pressure region depending on NaCl concentrations and pore sizes. A Pitzer model for electrolytes solutions and a correction term for capillary effect were adopted to estimate the activity of water in the aqueous electrolyte solutions within silica gel pores. The cage dependent C-13 NMR chemical shifts of the enclathrated CH4 molecules in 15.0 nm silica gel pores were confirmed to be identical with those of bulk CH4 hydrates (sI) and consistent through different NaCl concentrations and CO2 compositions. This research was performed for the Greenhouse Gas Research Center, one of the Critical Technology-21 Programs, funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Korea and also partially supported by the Brain Korea 21 Project

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Hydration number and two-phase equilibria of CH4 hydrate in the deep ocean sediments

    No full text
[1] The aqueous solubilities of CH4 in the two-phase (hydrate (H)-liquid water (L-w)) region, which is very close to the deep sea floor condition, were measured at various ranges of temperature and pressure. The hydration number determined via Raman spectroscopy at 10.0 MPa and 274.15 K was found to be 6.00 that is a little higher than 5.75 of the ideal one. The solubility of CH4 in liquid water largely increased with a small increase of temperature, but slightly decreased with increasing pressure in the two-phase (H-L-w) region. This solubility behavior was experimentally confirmed to be completely different from that occurring in the three-phase (H-L-w-V) boundary. The present results might be valuable as the fundamental data for estimating the amount of in situ gas hydrate and understanding the unique feature of hydrate formation/dissociation mechanism and the hydrate stability in the deep ocean sediments
