WOS: 000522808000012Introduction: Women, postpartum are especially vulnerable after an episiotomy. Several complications may develop such as perineal pain, discomfort, prolonged wound healing, and infection. This study investigated whether the use of Hypericum perforatum (HP) oil used for wound care for women who had received an episiotomy to facilitate labour could be effective in facilitating healing. Methods: This controlled single-blind and randomized experimental study with a pretest-posttest design. was conducted in a Training and Research Hospital for Gynecology and Obstetrics in Northern Turkey. The 135 women agreeing to participate in the study were randomised into 3 groups: 45 women who used only Saline Solution (SS), 45 women who were treated with HP oil and 45 women who received routine clinical care after episiotomy, the latter constituted the control group 45 women. A structured information form, REEDA (Redness, Edema, Ecchymosis, Discharge, Approximation) scale and VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) were used for data collection. Results: The mean age of women was 22.75 +/- 3.19 years. The examination of the REEDA scores showed that HP oil decreased the redness, edema, ecchymosis, and discharge in women with episiotomy. HP oil was also more effective regarding the approximation of the wound edges (p < .05). The women, using HP oil for wound care, statistically reported less pain when compared to the women managed with routine wound care or saline solution (p < .00). Conclusion: HP oil may be an effective wound care product which may contributes to improving wound healing in women who have had an episiotomy

Reliability and validity of Turkish version of clinical stress questionnaire

    No full text
This study was conducted for the purpose of testing the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Clinical Stress Questionnaire, which was developed to examine the stress that nursing students experience in their first clinical experiences that are threatening or challenging. The study sample was comprised of 80 first-year nursing students who had their first clinical practice experience. Internal consistency of the total questionnaire was Cronbach's alpha = 0.70 and the factor analysis supported the original construct. Based on these results the Turkish version of the Clinical Stress Questionnaire can be used as a valid and reliable instrument. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Oral care as a subject of patient safety in neurosurgical intensive care units

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a nosocomial infection that is frequently seen in the intubated patients receiving mechanical ventilation support in intensive care units, and that can develop within 48 hours following intubation. VAP takes a distinct part among the nosocomial infections due to high mortality and morbidity rate, increase of the number of days on which mechanical ventilation support is received for maintenance of the respiratory activity and of the length of hospital stay, raise in healthcare expenses, and the labor loss caused by it. VAP is one of the most common nosocomial infections in intensive care unit and 47% of all nosocomial infections.Measures to be taken timely will reduce occurrence, motility and morbidity of nosocomial pneaumania. Pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions are recommended to prevent VAP development. One of the recommendations to prevent VAP development is application of a good oral care to patients receiving ventilatory support. Important roles fall to the intensive care nurses in development of the evidence-based mouth care protocols and implementation of such protocols for reduction of the incidence and prevalence of the VAP threatening the patient safety. In this respect, in this review, it was aimed to address the evidence-based practices and making suggestions regarding mouth care in prevention of VAP in neurosurgery intensive care patients

Aim: The study was performed as descriptive, comperative and correlational to evaluate the personal values and ethical sensitivity level of the nurses and to examine the relation in-between. Method: The study was performed as descriptive, comperative and correlational. Written permissions are obtained from Kocaeli University, Faculty of Medicine ethic committee and the insitutions that will carry out this research. The universe of the research consists of 230 nurses working at two private hospitals and two public hospitals in Yalova City; the sample of the research consists of 170 nurses who accept to work for this research. The data of the research were collected by using Structured Questionnaire, Hierarchy of Values Scale and Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire-MSQ and analysed with frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, crosstabs, Mann Whitney U and Kruskall Wallistest by using SPSS-15 package programme on computer. Results: Among the value choices of the nurses, political and moral values ranked first and second with similar percentage among the nurses in the sample (%28,2). Nurses' ADA total (X +/- SS 76,33 +/- 22,84) and its sub-dimensions (autonomy is 17,74 +/- 4,61; benevolence is 11,90 +/- 4,32; holistic approach is 12,61 +/- 4,17; experiencing conflict is 6,74 +/- 2,65; practice is 9,59 +/- 2,99; orientation is 9,87 +/- 3,90) are found to have high ethical sensitivity levels according to mean marks. It is seen that nurses ethical sensitivity levels differ according to their basic personal value preferences. The findings show that nurses who adopt social values as their basic value have high ethical levels and nurses who adopt economic values as their basic value have the lowest ethical sensitivity level. Conclusion: In conclusion, it is detected that nurses adopted primarily political and moral values. It is determined that ethical sensitivity levels vary according to nurses basic personal value preferences

AbstractPurposeThe study aims to determine the relationship between nurses’ empathic tendencies, empathic skills, and individualized care perceptions.Design and MethodsThis study employed a descriptive and correlational design. Data were collected from nurses in eight training and research hospitals in Turkey. The study sample consisted of 472 nurses who were both volunteered to participate and randomly selected.FindingsA definite high‐level relation was determined between nurses’ empathic tendencies and individualized care perceptions, but no relation was determined between nurses’ empathic skills and individualized care perceptions.Practice ImplicationsThis study can underline practices accounting for empathy and individualized care in nursing research and training programs.</jats:sec
