Retinoylation reactions are inversely related to the cardiolipin level in testes mitochondria from hypothyroid rats
The effect of hypothyroidism, induced by 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) administration to rats, on the retinoylation reaction and oxidative status was investigated in rat-testes mitochondria. In hypothyroid mitochondria, when compared to euthyroid controls, we found a noticeable increase in the amount of all-trans-retinoic acid (atRA) bound to mitochondrial proteins by an acylation process (34.2±1.9 pmoles atRA/mg protein/360 min and 22.2±1.7 pmoles atRA/mg protein/360 min, respectively). This increase, which was time- and temperature-dependent, was accompanied by a strong reduction in the cardiolipin (CL) amount in the mitochondrial membranes of hypothyroid (2.6±0.2%) as compared to euthyroid rats (4.5±0.5%) Conversely, a decreased retinoylation reaction was observed when CL liposomes were added to mitochondria or mitoplasts from both euthyroid and hypothyroid rats, thus confirming a role of CL in the retinoylation process. In mitochondria from the latter animals an increase of the level of oxidized CL occurred. The ATP level, which was reduced in hypothyroid mitochondria (27.3±4.1 pmoles ATP/mg protein versus 67.1±8.3 pmoles ATP/mg protein of euthyroid animals), was surprisingly increased in mitochondria by the retinoylation reaction in the presence of 100 nM atRA (481.5±19.3 pmoles ATP/mg protein of hypothyroid animals versus 84.7±7.7 pmoles ATP/mg protein of euthyroid animals). Overall, in hypothyroid rat-testes mitochondria the increase in retinoylation activity correlates with a significant depletion of the CL level, due to a peroxidation of this lipid. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Scheffersomyces stipitis ability to valorize different residual biomasses for vitamin B9 production
Sugar beet pulp (SBP), sugar beet molasses (SBM) and unfermented grape marcs (UGM) represent important waste in the agro-food sector. If suitably pre-treated, hexose and pentose sugars can be released in high quantities and can subsequently be used by appropriate cell factories as growth media and for the production of (complex) biomolecules, accomplishing the growing demand for products obtained from sustainable resources. One example is vitamin B9 or folate, a B-complex vitamin currently produced by chemical synthesis, almost exclusively in the oxidized form of folic acid (FA). It is therefore desirable to develop novel competitive strategies for replacing its current fossil-based production with a sustainable bio-based process. In this study, we assessed the production of natural folate by the yeast Scheffersomyces stipitis, investigating SBM, SBP and UGM as potential growth media. Pre-treatment of SBM and SBP had previously been optimized in our laboratory; thus, here we focused only on UGM pre-treatment and hydrolysis strategies for the release of fermentable sugars. Then, we optimized the growth of S. stipitis on the three media formulated from those biomasses, working on inoculum pre-adaptation, oxygen availability and supplementation of necessary nutrients to support the microorganism. Folate production, measured with a microbiological assay, reached 188.2 ± 24.86 μg/L on SBM, 130.6 ± 1.34 μg/L on SBP and 101.9 ± 6.62 μg/L on UGM. Here, we demonstrate the flexibility of S. stipitis in utilizing different residual biomasses as growth media. Moreover, we assessed the production of folate from waste, and to the best of our knowledge, we obtained the highest production of folate from residual biomasses ever reported, providing the first indications for the future development of this microbial production process
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) control by combining bio-scrubber and ozone pretreatment
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are toxic for the environment and human health and their tendency to readily volatilize in the atmosphere can lead to problems connected to odours annoyance. Conventional VOCs gaseous emissions treatments entail the application of chemical-physical processes, only promoting the transfer of the contaminants from gas to liquid and/or solid phases. Advanced Oxidation Process (AOPs) and biological processes, conversely, support the oxidation of the organic pollutants, promoting their conversion into harmless and odourless compounds. The integration of booth processes is suggested to increase treatability of VOC. The research presents the application of an innovative treatment system composed by an AOPs pretreatment coupled with a bio-scrubbing unit for the abatement of VOCs, with the aim to increase the removal efficiency. The evaluation of the performance of the proposed system is discussed with reference to the analysis carried out using toluene as model substance. Different operating conditions have been analyzed and investigated to optimize the removal efficiency. The results show that the ozonation applied as pretreatment to the biological process may promote an increase of the pollutant biodegradability along with synergic effects due to the absorption of the ozone derived compounds into the culture growth, resulting in a significant enhancement of removal performances respect to the conventional biotechnologies. A toluene removal efficiency up to 95% were obtained under the investigated conditions
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
