The Pontic lyra in contemporary Greece

    No full text
This thesis examines the performance techniques for playing the Politic lyra, a vertically-held bottle-shaped bowed lute which is the main instrument of the Poetic Greeks. The objectives of the research were to identify the ways in which the traditional performance techniques for the Lyra have been extended in the past, especially in the work of Gogos Petrides, and to explore the possibilities of extending these further in order to enable the lyra player to effectively perform styles and repertoires from outside Greece, with particular reference to the music of Afghanistan. A detailed discussion of changes in performance practices required the use of a broad range of contextualising material, enabling the author to position his work in the context of modern Greece. The thesis begins with a historical overview and provides background information about the culture and history of the Pontic settlements on the Black Sea coast of what is modern Turkey, up to the population exchanges of 1922. It provides a detailed organological study of the instrument and looks into its history, concluding it has a European/Byzantine rather than a Middle Eastern origin. The author also discusses the traditional and the contemporary performance techniques of the Pontic Lyra and describes his own experience as both performer and ethnographer during extended periods of fieldwork. The DVD and CD included in the thesis are of major importance as they provide a key role in demonstrating and illustrating the author's core research methods, findings and outcomes. The author's work was `mirrored' in an unassessed recital given at the end of the research. Chapter 1 provides a historical overview of the culture of the Pontic Greeks. Chapter 2 describes the morphology of the Pontic lyra and discusses its origins. Chapter 3 discusses the traditional and the contemporary performance techniques for the lyra; the author also describes his own learning experience within the context of a musical family. Chapter 4 considers three traditional genres of lyra music, the extended techniques attributed to Gogos Petrides, which have been further developed by the author. Chapter 5 recounts fieldwork carried out in Greece with six well-established Pontic musicians, who have much to say about the influence of Gogos Petrides. Chapter 6 explains how, through making a study of Afghan music as played on the dutar and rubab, the has adapted pre-existing and devised new techniques for playing the Afghan repertoire on the Pontic lyra. Chapter 7 summarises the research carried out, while an Appendix describes the preparations made for the recital which is part of the examination process. This thesis is accompanied by a CD and a DVD illustrating aspects of the research

The benefit of distractions: the effect of social and non-social distractions on boredom and performance

The present study sought to test a cognitive capacity explanation of the distraction-conflict theory of social facilitation (Baron, 1986). Introverts and extraverts performed a sustained attention to response task and a word-pair task. Participants performed these tasks in the presence of social distractions (coactor and evaluator) and non-social distractions (low and high complexity music) to determine if performance in the difference conditions was moderated by extraversion. In addition, this study proposed that the mediators of the moderated relationship between condition and extraversion would be boredom and mind-wandering. Results indicate that extraverts need more outside stimulation to achieve performance facilitation than introverts. Introverts, on the other hand, showed performance impairment when over stimulated. When performance was facilitated, the amount of task unrelated thoughts decreased, whereas when performance was impaired, task unrelated thoughts increased. Theses results support a cognitive capacity explanation for the distraction-conflict theory of social facilitation.Ph. D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Lyra Michelle Stei

Lyra: An Interactive Visualization Design Environment

    No full text
We present Lyra, an interactive environment for designing customized visualizations without writing code. Using drag-and-drop interactions, designers can bind data to the properties of graphical marks to author expressive visualization designs. Marks can be moved, rotated and resized using handles; relatively positioned using connectors; and parameterized by data fields using property drop zones. Lyra also provides a data pipeline interface for iterative, visual specification of data transformations and layout algorithms. Visualizations created with Lyra are represented as specifications in Vega, a declarative visualization grammar that enables sharing and reuse. We evaluate Lyra's expressivity and accessibility through diverse examples and studies with journalists and visualization designers. We find that Lyra enables users to rapidly develop customized visualizations, covering a design space comparable to existing programming-based tools.Computer Graphics Foru

The use of Wavelight® Contoura to create a uniform cornea: the LYRA Protocol. Part 1: the effect of higher-order corneal aberrations on refractive astigmatism

    No full text
Manoj Motwani Motwani LASIK Institute, San Diego, CA, USA Purpose: To demonstrate how higher-order corneal aberrations can cancel out, modify, or induce lower-order corneal astigmatism. Patients and methods: Six representative eyes are presented that show different scenarios in which higher-order aberrations interacting with corneal astigmatism can affect the manifest refraction. WaveLight® Contoura ablation maps showing the higher-order aberrations are shown, as are results of correction with full measured correction using the LYRA (Layer Yolked Reduction of Astigmatism) Protocol. Results: Higher-order corneal aberrations such as trefoil, quadrafoil, and coma can create ovalization of the central cornea, which can interact with the ovalization caused by lower-order astigmatism to either induce, cancel out, or modify the manifest refraction. Contoura processing successfully determines the linkage of these interactions resulting in full astigmatism removal. Purely lenticular astigmatism appears to be rare, but a case is also demonstrated. The author theorizes that all aberrations require cerebral compensatory processing and can be removed, supported by the facts that full removal of aberrations and its linkage with lower-order astigmatism with the LYRA Protocol has not resulted in worse or unacceptable vision for any patients. Conclusion: Higher-order aberrations interacting with lower-order astigmatism is the main reason for the differences between manifest refraction and Contoura measured astigmatism, and the linkage between these interactions can be successfully treated using Contoura and the LYRA Protocol. Lenticular astigmatism is relatively rare. Keywords: topographic guided ablation, LASIK, PRK, WaveLight Contoura, uniform cornea, higher order aberration

    Individual differences in social facilitation:

    No full text
The present study sought to elucidate the differences in performance in a social facilitation paradigm based on Uziel’s (2007) meta-analysis. The present study measured the personality variables of anxiety, extraversion and self-esteem to determine moderation of performance on two word-pair tasks of varying complexity in a social facilitation paradigm. One hundred thirty-eight participants were randomly assigned to either the absence (alone) or presence (observer present) conditions. The results indicate that there are significant differences in performance based on differences in anxiety, extraversion and self-esteem, however in a manner other than theorized by Uziel or proposed by the present study. Individuals scoring high on extraversion and self-esteem were facilitated in the absence condition compared with the presence condition. Individuals high in anxiety did not change in performance between the absence and presence conditions. The results are discussed in terms of attentional mechanisms proposed by the distraction-conflict theory of social facilitation.M.S.Includes bibliographical references (p. 52-61)by Lyra Michelle Stei

Five collections of lyra viol music published by John Playford

    No full text
John Playford, the well known English music publisher, published at least five different volumes for the lyra viol between the years 1651 and 1682. This was a period of intense musical activity among London's upper classes. The lyra viol publications were a part of Playford's output designed to meet the amateurs' demands for instructional material and for music geared to their interests and abilities. The first edition, entitled A Musicall Banquet, was a collection of vocal and instrumental music, one-third of which was devoted to the lyra viol. The four subsequent editions were entitled Musicks Recreation and were made up entirely of material for the lyra viol. All five lyra viol editions contain instructions and lyra viol pieces. The music, on the whole, is light, unpretentious and charming. There are lyra viol arrangements of popular songs and original dances for the instrument, many of the latter by the best composers of Playford's day, such as Charles Coleman, William Lawes, Simon Ives and John Jenkins. The body of music contained in the five editions is sizeable. Despite similar titles, the editions are not merely reprints. The musical contents vary considerably. Each successive lyra viol edition retains a certain number of pieces from the previous edition(s), but draws many new pieces from outside sources as well. All told, the editions contain 299 different pieces of music. This thesis is a study of Playford's five lyra viol editions. It takes the form of an historical commentary, including an analysis of the music, and a series of appendixes. The commentary is divided into five chapters. In the chapters, the author surveys Playford's career and publications, presents a history of the dates of issue of the lyra viol editions, and discusses the instructional material within the editions, the types of music the editions contain, and the composers and arrangers contributing to the editions. One of the most interesting aspects of the historical commentary appears in the first chapter where some previously unknown facts are presented which lead to a revision of the commonly accepted date of issue for the earliest surviving edition of Musicks Recreation. Six appendixes follow the historical commentary. Here, there are tables of contents for all the lyra viol editions, indexes arranged according to title and composer of all the music within the five editions, complete bibliographic descriptions of each successive lyra viol edition, and fifty-one of Playford's lyra viol pieces in transcribed versions. A thematic catalogue, one of the most important parts of the entire study, is contained in the third appendix. The catalogue, which contains an entry for each of the 299 different pieces in the editions, is arranged according to musical characteristics. The catalogue indicates concordances between the five lyra viol editions, cites instances where the lyra viol pieces appear in other seventeenth-century sources, and gives cross-references to the other indexes and tables within the thesis. For reasons of format, accuracy, and availability, this catalogue supercedes all earlier studies.Arts, Faculty ofMusic, School ofGraduat

32nd International Physics Congress of Turkish-Physical-Society (TPS) -- SEP 06-09, 2016 -- Bodrum, TURKEYIn this study, we have solved Einstein field equations for Bianchi type I universe model in Lyra manifold with quadratic equation of state (EoS) p = alpha rho(t)(2) - rho(t). Where alpha not equal 0 is an important constant. Cosmic pressure, density and displacement vector (beta(2)) are related with a constant. In this study beta(2) is a decreasing function of time and behaves like a cosmological constant. These solutions agree with the studies of lialford, Pradhan and Singh, Aygun et al., Agarwal et al., Yadav and liaque as well as SN la observations.Turkish Phys So
