Fathers' perspectives: a qualitative approach to understanding the experiences of fathers of children in special education

    No full text
There has been a growing interest in understanding and increasing father involvement in their child's education. Ongoing research has documented the positive effects of father involvement; however, fathers continue to feel disconnected from their child's school and educational program. Not surprisingly, research has indicated that fathers of children in special education are also underutilized by school practitioners. Rather than reaching out to both parents, school personnel continue to disregard fathers and rely predominately on the child's mother. Because federal policy mandates parent collaboration on special education teams, there is a need for special education personnel to begin reaching out to fathers in order to increase their involvement in the process. In this study, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with fathers of children in special education to better understand their involvement in the process. This study examines their experiences engaging with school personnel and their perspectives on their roles in their child's special education program. Their emotional reactions to the process are examined within the in-depth data providing a rich description of their experiences. Findings indicate that the fathers in this study are strong advocates for their children and are very concerned for their children's education. In addition, the fathers want to be included more often and to be seen as equal partners in their child's special education program. Furthermore, these fathers offered recommendations for special education personnel to better facilitate the involvement of fathers. Suggestions for school psychology practice and topics for future research are discussed.Psy.DIncludes bibliographical references (p. 69-73)by Jeffrey S. SelmanIncludes abstrac

Generating Bayes-Nash equilibria to design autonomous trading agents.

    No full text
This paper presents a methodology for designing trading agents for complex games. We compute, for the first time, Bayes-Nash equilibria for firstprice single-unit auctions and mth-price multi-unit auctions, when the auction has a set of possible closing times, one of which is chosen randomly for the auction to end at. To evaluate this approach we used our analysis to generate strategies for the International Trading Agent Competition. One of these was evaluated as the best overall and was subsequently used very successfully by our agent WhiteBear in the 2005 competition

Control of gonad growth, maturation and spawning in teleost fish: A review

    No full text
Despite their great variety of reproductive strategies, a general characteristic of most teleosts is that (where known) natural reproduction shows a long-term periodicity, even in tropical habitats (e.g. see contributions in Munro et al. 1990a). Typically, gonad development from puberty leads to fully-grown gonads by the advent of the spawning season; if conditions are appropriate, then final gonad maturation leads to the production of viable gametes during one or more breeding bouts. Subsequently, in those larger species which spawn over more than one season, the gonads regress and the individual returns to a phase where any growth is somatic. However, there is wide interspecific variability in the pattern of gonad development (Wallace and Selman 1981, de Vlaming 1983, Billard 1986, Selman and Wallace 1989)

Domain-Independent Extensions to GSAT: Solving Large Structured Satisfiability Problems

    No full text
GSAT is a randomized local search procedure for solving propositional satisfiability problems (Selman et al. 1992). GSAT can solve hard, randomly generated problems that are an order of magnitude larger than those that can be handled by more traditional approaches such as the Davis-Putnam procedure. GSAT also efficiently solves encodings of graph coloring problems, N-queens, and Boolean induction. However, GSAT does not perform as well on handcrafted encodings of blocks-world planning problems and formulas with a high degree of asymmetry. We present three strategies that dramatically improve GSAT's performance on such formulas. These strategies, in effect, manage to uncover hidden structure in the formula under considerations, thereby significantly extending the applicability of the GSAT algorithm. 1 Introduction Selman et al. (1992) introduce a randomized greedy local search procedure called GSAT for solving propositional satisfiability problems. Experiments show that this procedure..

Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

    No full text
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
