Does Stress Enhance Latent Inhibition
This work evaluated the influence of stress on latent inhibition performance in humans. Latent inhibition refers to the situation where an observer has difficulties creating associations when encountering an irrelevant but familiar stimulus. Sing-a-song test was used as a stress manipulation to induce the mental stress in short time. Participants were asked to sing a song in an unpredictable moment while they were videotaped. This resulted in an increase in skin conductance level and heart rate. Latent inhibition task was used to measure the effect of familiarity on learning. Preexposed stimulus was presented 20 times in the preexposure phase. In the test phase, target stimulus followed each preexposed stimulus and a novel stimulus 20 times. Participants had to respond to the target stimulus. The results of the analysis indicated that reaction time for preexposed stimulus was higher than reaction time for non-preexposed stimulus. Consistent with some literature, stress was found to have significant impact on latent inhibition in the current study. Statistically significant difference was found between stress and non-stress groups for preexposed stimulus. In other words, preexposed stimulus had higher reaction time in stress group than preexposed stimulus in non-stress group. Similarly, non-preexposed stimulus had higher reaction time in stress group than non-preexposed stimulus in non-stress group
The Long-Lasting Effects of Extinction During the Reconsolidation Process of Fear Memory
In the present study, we have examined the time dependent and long-term effects of extinction carried out during the reconsolidation process of fear memories. The reconsolidation update procedure developed by Schiller, et al. (2010) in a three-phase experiment (acquisition, extinction, and re-extinction of fear) was followed to see the time-dependent effects of the reconsolidation update on preventing fears; additionally, a one-year follow-up study was conducted to observe the long-term effects. Extinction training was given to the participants 10 minutes after the reminder (within the reconsolidation window), 6 hours after the reminder (outside of the reconsolidation window), and without reminder (standard extinction). The spontaneous recovery of fear reactions were tested 24 hours, 15 days or 3 months after the extinction. A 3 (Extinction: 10 minutes and 6 hours after the reminder and no reminder) x 3 (Re-extinction: 24 hours, 15 days, and 3 months after the extinction) between-groups design was used in the study. Skin conductance response of the participants was recorded as a measure of fear reactions in each phase. The results revealed that when extinction training was given within the reconsolidation window, spontaneous recovery of the fear responses was significantly lower as compared to the extinction training outside of the reconsolidation window and standard extinction training independent of the re-extinction manipulation. However, in the one-year follow-up, long-term effects of extinction during the fear memory reconsolidation was not found to be significant
Determining Saliency Levels of Emotional Facial Expressionsby Using Instructed Lying Paradigm
The current thesis investigates if emotional facial expressions with distinct saliency levels differ in terms of their resistance to the cognitive load that lying brings into as a function of their salience. In Study I, participants were asked to complete an emotion recognition task while response time and skin conductance measurements were being recorded in order to determine saliency levels of emotional facial expressions. In Study II, an instructed-lying paradigm was applied through an emotion recognition task to assess the resistance levels of facial expressions with distinct salience to the cognitive load lying produce. In Study III, in order to control if providing instruction to lie causes an overall change in the way facial expressions are processed, participants were asked to decide when to lie. Overall results indicate that distinct emotional facial expressions differ in terms of their saliency levels and salience of a facial expression makes it more resistant to lying. Also, analyses conducted on response time and skin conductance responses of distinct study groups indicate that lying is a more cognitively demanding task than telling the truth and may alter the way stimuli processed to be identified.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
