Big egos can be green: A study of CEO hubris and environmental innovation

    No full text
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Wiley via the DOI in this record. This paper examines whether and to what extent CEO personal traits (hubris, in particular) affect firm environmental innovation. Using the overarching theoretical framework of upper-echelons theory, the paper builds on the insights from corporate strategy, innovation, and corporate social responsibility literatures. We also examine the moderating role of firm-specific features (e.g. organizational slack) and the external environment (e.g. market uncertainty) in this context. Based on a sample of UK companies operating in sensitive industries, we find that CEO hubris facilitates the engagement in green innovative projects. We also find that CEO hubris does not have a uniform effect: its effect on environmental innovation increases with the organizational slack, but weakens with the extent of environmental uncertainty. Our findings suggest that availability of resources per se is not enough to produce environmental innovation. Instead, it requires a stable external environment that enables the CEO with a hubristic personality to make a correct use of them

Beyond the Standard Model physics in the far-forward region of the Large Hadron Collider

    No full text
A new physics program has been initiated as part of the ongoing LHC physics run in the far-forward region, where dedicated FASER and SND@LHC experiments are currently taking data. We discuss the possible discovery prospects of this program in the search for signatures of beyond the Standard Model physics. We focus on both the present period and the proposed future Forward Physics Facility (FPF) that will operate in the high luminosity LHC era.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, proceeding of the XXIX Cracow Epiphany Conference, Cracow, Poland, January 16-19 2023; references adde

Looking forward to test the KOTO anomaly with FASER

    No full text
The search for light and long-lived particles at the LHC will be intensified in the upcoming years with a prominent role of the new FASER experiment. In this study, we discuss how FASER could independently probe such scenarios relevant for new physics searches at kaon factories. We put an emphasis on the proposed explanations for the recently observed three anomalous events in the KOTO experiment. The baseline of FASER precisely corresponds to the proposed lifetime solution to the anomaly that avoids the NA62 bounds on charged kaons. As a result, the experiment can start constraining relevant models within the first few weeks of its operation. In some cases, it can confirm a possible discovery with up to 104 spectacular high-energy events in FASER during LHC run 3. Further complementarities between FASER and kaon factories, which employ FASER capability to study γγ signatures, are illustrated for the model with axionlike particles dominantly coupled to  SU(2)WSU(2)_W gauge bosons. The search for light and long-lived particles at the LHC will be intensified in the upcoming years with a prominent role of the new FASER experiment. Neutrino beam-dump experiment with FASER at the LHC

The neutrino physics program at the LHC, which will soon be initiated by the FASER experiment, will provide unique opportunities for precision studies of neutrino interaction vertices at high energies. This will also open up the possibility to search for beyond the standard model (BSM) particles produced in such interactions in the specific high-energy neutrino beam-dump experiment. In this study, we illustrate the prospects for such searches in models with the dipole or Z′ portal to GeV-scale heavy neutral leptons. To this end, we employ both the standard signature of new physics that consists of a pair of oppositely-charged tracks appearing in the decay vessel, and the additional types of searches. These include high-energy photons and single scattered electrons. We show that such a variety of experimental signatures could significantly extend the sensitivity reach of the future multi-purpose FASER 2 detector during the High-Luminosity phase of the LHC.The neutrino physics program at the LHC, which will soon be initiated by the FASER experiment, will provide unique opportunities for precision studies of neutrino interaction vertices at high energies. Narracje medialne wokół meczów polskiej reprezentacji w piłce nożnej w kontekście rocznicowym

This article outlines a theoretical framework for studying attitudes toward the past. The analysis focuses on narratives present in Polish sports media, using landmark matches of the Polish national football team as a point of departure. Based on these events, the author identifies the emergence of a community shaped by shared emotions, identity, and cultural memory. The author delineates two distinct narrative groups: narratives of success, which construct national prestige, patriotism, and a sense of national pride rooted in tradition and trust in the system; and narratives of shame, characterized by irony, mockery, sarcasm, and the denigration of the state, nation, or institutions as incapable of producing functional outcomes. Narratives of success revolve around victorious matches played by the Polish national team (e.g., against England, the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany), whereas narratives of shame/defeat pertain to matches marked by loss, unethical conduct, or poor organization. The author observes that protagonists from both narrative types have been commemorated in the discourse of sports, which contributes to shaping a poetics of memory.W artykule przedstawiono zarys teorii dotyczący badań nad stosunkiem do przeszłości. Analizie zostały poddane narracje w polskich mediach sportowych.

Notifying About Evaluations, Remarks and Conclusions of NIK – Comments on the Solution Adopted

The article comprises an analysis of the solution introduced on the basis of Article 62a of the Act on the Supreme Audit Office, related to notifying about evaluations, remarks and conclusions included in management letters. Similarly to the other provisions of the amended (in fact the new one) the NIK audit procedure, the Article entered into force on 2 June 2021. It allows for clear differentiation between management letters addressed to the managers of auditees, and notifications about evaluations, remarks and conclusions comprised in management letters that are developed on the basis of other legal provisions. In the text such matters have been discussed as, among other, the origins of notification introduction, entities authorised to issue notifications, ad dressees of notifications and their obligations, and the matter of making a notification publicised. The author indicates legal doubts that arise on the basis of Article 62a of the Act on NIK, by presenting and substantiating proposals for solutions in the area. In some cases, the author also makes proposals for modifying this provision
