Digital Cities, Londons Future
Background The Digital Cities exhibitions looked at how digital technology helps us understand and improve the planning and experience of our city. The exhibition also looked at the impact on movement in cities: how communication and information technologies enhance a person's experience of place; how people interpret cities with the usc of technology; and how mapping influences the design and planning of cities. It also foregrounded issues such as privacy and security. Contribution The author has contributed by providing a physical model of his PhD thesis, the LED stick, to the exhibition. An image of the physical artwork was not included into the catalogue but a rendering (see image 12) of a wall clad with the prototype. The model presented represented two main research interests ofthe author, the topic of media facades and in particular voxel facades or Chromatophoric Architecture. SignifIcance The exhibition presented work of researchers in a digital city domain to a wider audience, explaining how digital technology helps us understand and improve the planning and experience of our city. The participating universities and researchers (slich as the Bartlett) demonstrate the interest and the quality of the exhibition, as well as the location in the Building Center in London and being cllrated by Sir Terry Farrell. The exhibition contribution was closely connected to the PhD thesis and had its subsequent foHow up by the publishing the research in Media facades - History, Technology, Content (Haeusler, 2009) and Chromatophoric Architecture (Haeusler, 2010)

Proof Compression and NP Versus PSPACE II: Addendum
In our previous work we proved the conjecture NP = PSPACE by advanced proof theoretic methods that combined Hudelmaier’s cut-free sequent calculus for minimal logic (HSC) with the horizontal compressing in the corresponding minimal Prawitz-style natural deduction (ND). In this Addendum we show how to prove a weaker result NP = coNP without referring to HSC. The underlying idea (due to the second author) is to omit full minimal logic and compress only “naive” normal tree-like ND refutations of the existence of Hamiltonian cycles in given non-Hamiltonian graphs, since the Hamiltonian graph problem in NPcomplete. Thus, loosely speaking, the proof of NP = coNP can be obtained by HSC-elimination from our proof of NP = PSPACE
How Many Times do We Need an Assumption to Prove a Tautology in Minimal Logic? Examples on the Compression Power of Classical Reasoning
AbstractIn this article we present a class of formulas ϕn,0≤n, that need at least 2n assumption occurrences of other formula βn in any normal proof in Natural Deduction for purely implicational minimal propositional logic (M→). In classical implicational logic, each ϕn have normal proofs using at most one assumption occurrence. As a consequence, normal proofs of ϕn have exponential lower bound in M→ and linear lower bound in its classical version. In fact, 2n is the lower-bound for cut-free Sequent proofs too. The existence of this class of formulas have strong influence in designing automatic proof-procedures based in such systems. It is discussed proof-theoretically how tautologies in purely implicational classical logic can be proved by polynomially sized derivations when their minimal counterpart is exponentially sized
Cut-elimination, substitution and normalisation
Date of Acceptance: 01/2015We present a proof (of the main parts of which there is a formal version, checked with the Isabelle proof assistant) that, for a G3-style calculus covering all of intuitionistic zero-order logic, with an associated term calculus, and with a particular strongly normalising and confluent system of cut-reduction rules, every reduction step has, as its natural deduction translation, a sequence of zero or more reduction steps (detour reductions, permutation reductions or simplifications). This complements and (we believe) clarifies earlier work by (e.g.) Zucker and Pottinger on a question raised in 1971 by Kreisel.Peer reviewe
Investigating Tools for Multi-Stakeholder Decision Making to Improve the Spatial Performance in Transport Interchanges
Public transport interchanges often involve several stakeholders for planning and decision-making. As a result complexity leads to inefficient processes, leading to indecision, disruption, or costly delays. Consequently, the paper focuses on the application of tools for navigation and prioritization of opportunities in the need finding, fuzzy-front end, or mystery phase as introduced by Martin (2009). The paper outlines in a case study how a multi-stakeholder platform can progress from complete ambiguity in project definition through to clearly defined and understood projects that have a shared intent across the multi-stakeholder platform. These tools have been applied in a public transport context, by demonstrating the process of integrating digital innovation into various stakeholders through a participatory research process. The paper introduces the research background; discusses the hypothesis; outlines the case study; emphasizes its significance for multi-stakeholder decision-making and discusses the opportunities for the built environment
Estes limites permitem provar a otimalidade
Sports management is a very attractive and not very
explored area for applications of Operations Research.
Problems in this area use to have simple formulations and
reach a big coveragge by the media. Although their
formulations are simple, in general these problems are
difficult to be solved in computational terms. The results
of many academic works in this area have been accepted as
solutions for real problems and some solutions are being
implemented.
This thesis has the main objective of studying two types
of problems that appear in the sports area: the fixture
creation and the qualification problems.
Fixture creation (also known as sport scheduling) for
sport competitions is a difficult task, in which several
combinatorial optimization techniques has been applied. In
this thesis, the Mirrored Traveling Tournament Problem is
formulated as a graph optmization problem. The problem is
solved using approximation algorithms. Two heuristics are
introduced for this problem. The first one is very fast
and is used to supply initial solutions for the second one
which is able to obtain high quality solutions in
reasonable computation times. Dual limits are deduced for
a particular type of instances. These limits allow to
prove the optimality of the heuristically abtained
solutions for instances that are much bigger than those
soved in the literature. Finally, an integer programming
model is introduced in wich valid inequalities are added.
The qualification problems aim to obtain necessary and
sufficient conditions for the playoffs qualification of a
given team in terms of the number of points to be
obtained. Integer programming models are introduced which
allow solving these problems in the context of the
Brazilian Football Championship
Myelin-reactive antibodies initiate T cell-mediated CNS autoimmune disease by opsonization of endogenous antigen
In the pathogenesis of central nervous system (CNS) demyelinating disorders, antigen-specific B cells are implicated to act as potent antigen-presenting cells (APC), eliciting waves of inflammatory CNS infiltration. Here, we provide the first evidence that CNS-reactive antibodies (Ab) are similarly capable of initiating an encephalitogenic immune response by targeting endogenous CNS antigen to otherwise inert myeloid APC. In a transgenic mouse model, constitutive production of Ab against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) was sufficient to promote spontaneous experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in the absence of B cells, when mice endogenously contained MOG-recognizing T cells. Adoptive transfer studies corroborated that anti-MOG Ab triggered activation and expansion of peripheral MOG-specific T cells in an Fc-dependent manner, subsequently causing EAE. To evaluate the underlying mechanism, anti-MOG Ab were added to a co-culture of myeloid APC and MOG-specific T cells. At otherwise undetected concentrations, anti-MOG Ab enabled Fc-mediated APC recognition of intact MOG; internalized, processed and presented MOG activated naive T cells to differentiate in an encephalitogenic manner. In a series of translational experiments, anti-MOG Ab from two patients with an acute flare of CNS inflammation likewise facilitated detection of human MOG. Jointly, these observations highlight Ab-mediated opsonization of endogenous CNS auto-antigen as a novel disease- and/or relapse-triggering mechanism in CNS demyelinating disorders
Diamond - Pebble - Asphalt. On the "upgrading" of costume jewellery in the 20. century
The thesis analyses the style, materials and motives of ?costume jewellery? in the period from approximately 1900 to the thirties, linking the new found appreciation of ?cheap? jewellery to the beginnings of the new fashion (?Reformkleid?). Since the author is a trained goldsmith the focus lies on materials, workmanship and production techniques. The results are well-grounded insights into key protagonists of costume jewellery, such as the Liberty Design, the Wiener Werkstätte, Rene Lalique, the Pforzheimer Werkstätten or Bauhaus.Differences in style and motifs between individual avant-garde jewellers will be highlighted as will the general style development of an artistic movement , which due to the variety of its materials ? ranging from silver, copper, glass and iron to synthetic materials, fruit stones and paper ? allows much more variance than traditional jewellery art of the time, the so-called ?real jewellery?. It will be pointed out that costume jewellery of past centuries not only shed its ?fringe function? but experienced a ?social upgrading? by open-minded customers and achieved an independent status , even influencing ?high-class? jewellery design. The thesis includes a exemplary selection of especially influential jewellery designers such as Rene Lalique, Henry van de Velde, Theodor Fahrner, Dagobert Peche, Naum Slutzky or Peter Chang, all of whom will be discussed not only with reference to their style and technique also their dominant motives. A special focus will lie on the era of Art Deco. One chapter will be devoted to a survey of the new floral and zoomorphic motifs of costume jewellery in the nineteen hundreds, the change of motifs concerning individual artists such as Joseph Hoffmann, Kolo Moser, Archibald Knox, Naum Slutzky, the gablonzer Künstler or Auguste Bonaz and the historical development in which the geometric abstract motif,, in which form and substance merge and the focus lies in the material, established itself.vorgelegt von Nina HäuslerAbweichender Titel laut Übersetzung der Verfasserin/des VerfassersGraz, Univ., Dipl.-Arb., 201
