to present Bultmann’s view on theology. The theme is relevant, since there is confusion as to
what theology is or should be. Although his theological contribution remains under attack,
Bultmann often complained of being misunderstood. Therefore it is necessary to read his work
carefully and to reconsider his approach. The author started with themes Bultmann discussed
in his lectures on theological encyclopaedia, published posthumously, and elaborates on them

In the Spirit of Paul: Thinking the Hebraic Inheritance (Heidegger, Bultmann, Jonas)
This chapter explores the relation between Heidegger, Rudolf Bultmann and Hans Jonas, through the figure of Paul. Bultmann was Heidegger’s friend and colleague from Marburg who used an existential ontology to reinvent Lutheran theology. Hans Jonas was a student of both of them, who left Germany for USA in 1933. For Heidegger, Paul was a voice of original facticity and historicity, but also a source for his choice of National Socialism and anti-Judaism. For Bultmann, Paul and Christianity served as a defence against totalitarian temptations. Jonas’s return to Paul in his later years is both a response to Heidegger’s betrayal and a celebration of his original interpretation in a reinvention of Paul as a Jewish existential thinker. © The Author(s) 2017.</p
Comparative aspects of the term "self-understanding" as used by Rudolf Bultmann and Seward Hiltner
This study seeks to compare the way Rudolf Bultmann and Sward Hiltner each describe and use the term "self-understanding" as important for man's existence. The author limits his study to those aspects of self-understanding which are clearly similar or contrasting as developed by Bultmann and by Hiltner. The method is to structure the comparison in three major parts, (1) characteristics of the nature of self-understanding (2) elements of the process of self-understanding, and (3) aspects of man in his relationships in the world as he is affected by the continuing process of self-understanding. Hiltner considers man's self-understanding to be a quantitative increase in insight through encountering fellowship in the counseling relationship, which overcomes his emotional impairments and thus frees him for growth toward his potential life of individuality and sociality; this is possible because pastoral counseling is in response to God's word of love in Christ, and it manifests the gospel in the healing ministry. Bultmann considers man's self-understanding to be God's gift of "authentic existence," consisting of man's freedom to love others as he responds in faith to God's grace in Christ addressing him in the proclamation of the kerygma, man is thereby freed from trying to secure his own life and he thus lives in the world "as though not." In an epilogue the author discusses the relevancy of the study for his pastoral ministry. The author contends that both Bultmann and Hiltner offer real help for the pastor seeking to minister to the variable needs of persons. His thesis is that a pastor fulfills his calling as a Christian minister most effectively when he relates and applies the finding of both Pastoral Care and New Testament theology, particularly in regard to man's self-understanding
Different binding properties and function of CXXC zinc finger domains in Dnmt1 and Tet1
Several mammalian proteins involved in chromatin and DNA modification contain CXXC zinc finger domains. We compared the structure and function of the CXXC domains in the DNA methyltransferase Dnmt1 and the methylcytosine dioxygenase Tet1. Sequence alignment showed that both CXXC domains have a very similar framework but differ in the central tip region. Based on the known structure of a similar MLL1 domain we developed homology models and designed expression constructs for the isolated CXXC domains of Dnmt1 and Tet1 accordingly. We show that the CXXC domain of Tet1 has no DNA binding activity and is dispensable for catalytic activity in vivo. In contrast, the CXXC domain of Dnmt1 selectively binds DNA substrates containing unmethylated CpG sites. Surprisingly, a Dnmt1 mutant construct lacking the CXXC domain formed covalent complexes with cytosine bases both in vitro and in vivo and rescued DNA methylation patterns in dnmt1⁻/⁻ embryonic stem cells (ESCs) just as efficiently as wild type Dnmt1. Interestingly, neither wild type nor ΔCXXC Dnmt1 re-methylated imprinted CpG sites of the H19a promoter in dnmt1⁻/⁻ ESCs, arguing against a role of the CXXC domain in restraining Dnmt1 methyltransferase activity on unmethylated CpG sites
La fe como evento existencialescatológico en el pensamiento de Rudolf Bultmann. De la filosofía de Martín Heidegger al planteo teológico
In this paper we analyze the proposition that the theologian
Rudolf Bultmann made on the subject of faith. We describe the mutual influences between Martin Heidegger and Bultmann from specially developed joint work in Marburg in 1923 and 1924. The author shows that, although Heidegger’s existential philosophy represented an important influence to Bultmann, the latter develops a more theological approach that characterizes faith as an existential and eschatological event that requires a decision on the part of the listener. Bultmann also remains faithful to its Lutheran heritage to take away the anthropological approach of existentialism, stating the total character of the fall of man that makes him unfit to achieve for itself «real life» dimension can be realized only by through faith in Christ crucified. The latter is for Bultmann the real scandal of the Gospel and not the «fake scandal» of the pre-scientific vision of the New Testament kerygma. This research aims to demonstrate that demythologizing, which becomes an insurmountable hurdle for many readers of Bultmann, was just a method to facilitate faith in the gospel by modern man. Consequently, to paraphrase Immanuel Kant, Bultmann seems to say: «I had to let go of the myth to give rise to faith»
Rudolf Bultmann\u27s Concept of Myth and the New Testament
Is it necessary to add a new contribution to the dossier, already too voluminous, of the debate revolving around the publication of Rudolf Bultmann, former professor on the faculty of Protestant theology at Marburg, titled The New Testament and Mythology? This small pamphlet, which may be considered a manifesto and has since been reproduced by the author in a slightly different form, appeared for the first time in 1941 under the title Offenbarung und Heilsgeschehen. The purpose of the author is to make the New Testament language accessible to the modern mind by eliminating what he calls the myth and what I call redemptive history (Heilsgeschichte)
Fundamentalisme en kritisisme: Nadenke oor Skrifbeskouing en Skrifverklaring – van Augustinus tot Bultmann
Fundamentalism and criticism: Reflections on the view and use of Scripture – from Augustine to Bultmann
In this article the author investigates the views of fundamentalism and criticism as far as the doctrine of Scripture is concerned. In this context, special attention is given to the doctrine of the resurrection of the body. By way of a prelude the views of the great church father, Augustine, who influenced Western theology fundamentally, are scrutinised. The author arrives at the conclusion that elements of criticism can be discovered in the fundamentalist stance while the critical option can be blamed for its (although reduced) fundamentalistic approach
Bultmann\u27s Understanding of the Divinity of Christ As Found in Scripture
My purpose in this essay will be to give some sort of an analysis of what one finds in Bultmann\u27s various writings dealing with the divinity of Christ as found in scripture. Since the author has no major work devoted entirely to this area, our main source will be text taken from his Theology of the New Testament and his essay, The Christological Confession of the World Council to Churches as found in his book Essays Philosophical and Theological. The former has some ten or eleven pages dealing with this subject, while the latter is devoted almost in its entirety to this area
Dogmática como exegese consequente? Sobre a relevância da exegese para a Teologia Sistemática em conexão com Rudolf Bultmann
In the current debates about the relationship among dogmatics, or systematic theology, and exegesis, as well as in the discussions concerning biblical theology and hermeneutics, the problem of historism continues virulent. Starting from this background, the author presents and interprets Rudolf Bultmann’s conception of hermeneutics, that not only challenges a current concept of systematic theology, but also the self-understanding of exegesis. Linked with Bultmann, he develops a program of hermeneutical theology that includes the questionings by the aesthetics of reception, or by literary hermeneutics and semiotics.
