    No full text
This paper highlights the use of digital technologies (DT) in education to enhance the inclusion of individuals with cognitive disabilities. Fifteen percent of the global population faces disabilities, leading to socio-economic challenges. This reflection is based on the systematic literature review conducted within the framework of a doctoral thesis in Educational Technology. Arguments in favor of DT revolve around their adaptability, accessibility, and interaction opportunities, enabling more personalized and enriching learning. Their benefits encompass breaking geographical and socio-economic barriers, facilitating communication and collaboration among students, and fostering autonomy and empowerment. However, ethical challenges such as data privacy and the digital divide must be considered. Hearing the perspectives of educators and families is crucial for effective implementation. In conclusion, the appropriate use of DT can promote a more inclusive and enriching education for individuals with cognitive disabilities.

Aims: This paper is a report of a study of conducted to determine the prevalence of bullying among faculty members in Schools or Colleges of Nursing. Background: The issue of bullying of nursing faculty in the academic setting is of interest in terms of recruitment, retention, job satisfaction, and the overall quality of the work environment. Method: This cross-sectional, descriptive study of faculty in three northeastern states of the U.S. was carried out in 2010. The Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised was used to survey faculty members in Schools of Nursing who award a baccalaureate degree (or higher) in nursing. Results: 473 faculty members met the inclusion criteria and responded to the NAQ-R. An iterative exploratory principal components analysis with orthogonal rotation was performed. Thirteen of the original 22 items were retained to measure the experiences of negative acts in the nursing faculty workplaces. The mean total score for the 13 item instrument was 17.90 (SD 6.07) and ranged from 13 to 56. The resulting components structure produced three clear subscales identifying the experiences of: Verbal abuse, Physical abuse, and Devaluing. The revised 13 item instrument had a Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.88. Experiences of bullying were reported in 169 of the 473 (36%) respondents. A significant correlation was found between meeting frequency and the report of bullying (r = 0.18, p ≤ 0.001). Administrators and senior faculty were more likely than expected to be the perpetrators of bullying. Discussion: If the leaders are identified as bullies, the environment cannot be perceived as supportive and healthy. These unhealthy environments may have serious consequences related to retaining nursing faculty.Peer reviewe

Labor Markets in the Twentieth Century

    No full text
The study of the labor market across the past hundred years reveals enormous progress and also that history repeats itself and has come full circle in some ways. Progress has been made in the rewards of labor -- wages, benefits, and increased leisure through shorter hours, vacation time, sick leave, and earlier retirement. Labor has been granted added security on the job and more safety nets when unemployed, ill, and old. Progress in the labor market has interacted with societal changes. Women's increased participation in the paid labor force is the most significant. The virtual elimination of child and full-time juvenile labor is another. Two of the most pressing economic issues of our day demonstrate that history repeats itself. Labor productivity has been lagging since the 1970s. It was equally sluggish at other junctures in American history, but the present has unique features. The current slowdown in the United States has been accompanied by a widening in the wage structure. Rising inequality is a far more serious problem because of the coincidence. The wage structure was as wide in 1940 as today but there is, to date, no hard evidence when it began its upward trend. The wage structure has, therefore, come full circle to what it was more than a half century ago. Union strength has also come full circle to that at the turn of this century.

Given a N-function AA and a continuous function hh satisfying certain assumptions, we derive the inequality \begin{eqnarray*} \int_\r A(|f^{'}(x)|h(f(x)))dx\leq C_1\int_\r A\left(C_2 \sqrt[p]{ |{\cal M}f^{''}(x){\cal T}_{h,p}(f,x)| }\cdot h(f(x)) \right)dx, \end{eqnarray*} with constants C1,C2C_1,C_2 independent of ff, where f0f\ge 0 belongs locally to the Sobolev space W2,1()˚W^{2,1}(\r), { ff^{'} has} compact support, p>1p>1 is smaller than the lower Boyd index of AA, Th,p(){\cal T}_{h,p}(\cdot) is certain nonlinear transform depending of hh but not of AA and M{\cal M} denotes the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function. Moreover, we show that when h1h\equiv 1, then Mf{\cal M}f^{''} can be improved by ff^{''}. This inequality generalizes previous result by third author and Peszek, which was dealing with p=2p=2

Abstract: The paper analyses the poem “Os dias de então”, by Claudia Roquette-Pinto (Margem de manobra, 2005, p. 85-86) from the point of view of dramatic monologue genre, based on Jane Roche-Jaques (2020) and Shira Wolosky (2001). Voice fictionalization processes (COMBE, 2009/2010), just as lyric addressment (CULLER, 2015; SERMET, 2019) are also considered in order to understand the effects of the orchestrated voices in the poem. There is a leading voice in “Os dias de então”, identified as Zelda Fitzgerald’s by the author. Zelda’s speech was translated and adapted by Roquette-Pinto from a part of a letter to Scott Fitzgerald. The languor and tenderness of this subjective voice in prose is crossed by other voices in verse which are impersonal, anonymous and bring up violent content. The reader testifies subterranean links between the leading voice and the other utterances through brutality and impact, in the poem’s bigger arrangement. Such links and references are rarefied and unstable, which is often noted in Claudia Roquette-Pinto’s poetry. Biographic information (MILFORD, 2013; BRYER et al, 2002) and confluences between lettering and lyric genres (SILVA, 2002; ADORNO, 2003) are brought up in the article in order to understand the arrangement of utterance articulation, as well as the social construct that moved them. Keywords: dramatic monologue; lyric addressment; contemporary poetry; voice; Claudia Roquette-Pinto

Search for hadronic resonance in multijet final states with the CDF detector

    No full text
This thesis describes a search for a new hadronic resonance in 3.2 fb{sup -1} of data using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The Fermilab Tevatron accelerator collides beams of protons and antiprotons at a center of mass energy of {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. A unique approach is presented to extract multijet resonances from the large QCD background. Although the search is model independent, a pair produced supersymmetric gluino decaying through R-parity violation into three partons each is used to test our sensitivity to new physics. We measure these partons as jets, and require a minimum of six jets in an event. We make use of the kinematic features and correlations and use an ensemble of jet combinations to distinguish signal from multijet QCD backgrounds. Our background estimates also include all-hadronic t{bar t} decays that have a signature similar to signal. We observe no significant excess in an invariant mass range of 77 GeV/c{sup 2} to 240 GeV/c{sup 2} and place 95% C.L. limits on {sigma}(p{bar p} {yields} {tilde g}{tilde g} {yields} 3jets + 3jets) as a function of gluino invariant mass

Blood lead levels increase, but remain in normal range with severe weight reduction.

High bone turnover states are known to raise blood lead levels (BPb). Caloric restriction will increase bone turnover, yet it remains unknown if weight reduction increases BPb due to mobilization of skeletal stores. We measured whole blood Pb levels (²⁰⁶Pb) by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in 73 women (age 24–75 years; BMI 23– 61 kg/m²) before and after 6 months of severe weight loss (S-WL), moderate weight loss (M-WL), or weight maintenance (WM). Baseline BPb levels were relatively low at 0.2–6.0 μg/dl, and directly associated with age (r=0.49, P<0.0001). After severe WL (-37.4±9.3 kg, n=17), BPb increased by 2.1±3.9 μg/dl (P<0.05), resulting in BPb levels of 1.3–12.5 μg/dl. M-WL (-5.6±2.7 kg, n=39) and WM (0.3±1.3 kg, n=17) did not result in an increase in BPb levels (0.5±3.2 and 0.0±0.7 μg/dl, M-WL and WM, respectively). BPb levels increased more with greater WL (r=0.24, P<0.05). Bone turnover markers increased only with severe WL and were directly correlated with WL. At baseline, higher calcium intake was associated with lower BPb (r=-0.273, P<0.02), however, this association was no longer present after 6 months. Severe weight reduction in obese women increases skeletal bone mobilization and BPb, but values remain well below levels defined as Pb overexposure. This research was supported by the NIEHS sponsored UMDNJ Center for Environmental Exposures and Disease, Grant number: NIEHS P30ES005022, in part by NIH-AG12161, and a Busch Biomedical Award to SA Shapses.National Institutes of Health: AG12161, to S.A.
