Cultural studies and cultural sociology: Scott Lash in conversation with Luca Serafini
The purpose of this conversation is to analyse the bond between Cultural Studies and social research, and define analogies and differences between Cultural Studies and Cultural Sociology. Scott Lash, a cultural theorist strongly influenced by philosophical thought, clarifies how the latter can rightfully be part of a social research oriented towards forms of life and practices, as well as towards a concrete, and not utopian, political commitment. The American scholar thoroughly investigates also the notion of "symbolic" in the field of Cultural Sociology, clarifying how it can interact with the speculative models of Cultural Studies
AbstractThe present article has as objective to establish an analysis of the problem of the reflexivity of the technological forms of life exposed by Scott Lash, through the identification of its central approaches with respect to the concept of reflection exposed in his theory of the doubles of reflective modernity. Agency and Architecture: How to Be Critical? (Scott Lash and Antoine Picon, in conversation with Kenny Cupers and Isabelle Doucet. Comments by Margaret Crawford)
Agency is a notion that brings together a variety of concerns that currently echo in diverse segments of the architectural debate. This article, in the form of a conversation, addresses this multifarious notion and attempts to bring to the fore points of intersection between agency-related concerns too often perceived as disconnected. The article has been assembled out of separate interviews with three prominent scholars who have, from different fields, made particular contributions to this theme: Antoine Picon, historian of architecture and technology; Scott Lash, professor of sociology and cultural studies; and Margaret Crawford, professor in architecture and urban studies. This conversation interrogates agency theoretically, and does so through three major questions. One question relates to agency’s binary coupling with structure, perhaps one of the most central concepts in the understanding of modern society. Secondly, because agency is intimately linked to the idea of ‘other’ possible actions and futures, it assumes intentionality and criticality, both of which resonate strongly in the architectural debate. Finally, in order to understand agency better within the specific context of architecture, the article addresses the condition of the architectural object and its relation to the individual and the social

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
This thesis is the result of a theoretical study prompted by the desire to contribute to the theoretical improvement of the category 'identity', beginning with an emphasis on particular and recurrent aspects of the process of establishment of cultural identities. The objectives that guided its development were the following: 1) to analyse structural conditions under which the question of identity becomes relevant in modern society (chapter 2); 2) to examine how globalisation impacts on the processes of identity formation (chapter 3); 3) place the main interpretative tendencies of the establishment of identity within what touches on the essentialist and constructivist presumptions (chapter 4); 4) to analyse recognition as a structural aspect of the identities anchored in the classical (Hegel) and contemporary (Charles Taylor and Nancy Fraser) debate and placed within the scope of the politics of feminist identity (chapters 4 and 5). Taking recognition as a structural component of identities it appeared supremely relevant to analyse what I have named its constitutive, theoretical and political dimensions. However, it was still necessary to outline the context - global modernities - and to assess the contributions of feminism as both theory and political action. This was the guiding theme of the thesis. To understand the establishment of identities in the modern era, identifying permanent aspects and continuities it was necessary to define a picture of modernity as the context which embraces and raises questions of identity (parts 1 and 2), emphasise recognition as a structural and recurrent dimension of identities and place this perception within the scope of feminism (part 3). This thesis, then, is divided in three parts. In the first part - The concept - the focus is a conceptual discussion. In the second part - The context and its changes -, consisting of two chapters, I seek to sketch out the main forms of modernity that have had the greatest impact on the way in which we take our place in the world and define our identities, emphasising the processes of rationalisation, individualisation and globalisation. The following chapter analyses some of the main impacts of these changes on the establishment of our identities in the sense of considering these changes, the particularities of the identities in global contexts. In the third part - The establishment of identities and their recurrent aspects -, also consisting of two chapters, I deliberate on recognition as a structural dimension of identities. Four parameters interweave and guide the analysis: 1) essentialism, constructivism and hyperconstructivism, 2) atomism or holism, 3) equality and difference, 4) particularism and universalism. And what conclusions can be taken from this study? The result is the proposal of a theoretical path for the analysis of modern identities that goes beyond principles, choices and repressive fictions
