Episode 31: Professor Paul W. Wehr Day at the Pioneer Days Pine Castle Historical Society History Tent Event

    No full text
The Department of History’s Sebastian Garcia talked with Mr. Richard Lee Cronin, author, historian, and event coordinator of the Pine Castle Historical Society HISTORY TENT, at the Annual Pine Castle Pioneer Days Event. This episode is dedicated to and is in honor of Professor Paul W. Wehr. A Professor of History at UCF since the Department’s inception in 1969, Professor Wehr retired in 1995 after 25 years of teaching his passion for history—inspiring countless students and faculty. Professor Wehr devoted much of his time to documenting the history of Orange County, specifically Pine Castle. This naturally led to a close relationship with the Pine Castle Historical Society, which dedicated Day 1 of the 2-day event at Pioneer Days to Professor Wehr for the first time this year. Sebastian decided to pay tribute to one of UCF’s original history professors by going to the Pine Castle Pioneer Days HISTORY TENT event dedicated to him and produced a podcast on location with Mr. Richard Lee Cronin, who knew Professor Wehr personally. Below are links to an Orlando Memory interview featuring Professor Wehr himself that Sebastian mentioned in the introduction of this podcast, the page to know more about his books and association with Pine Castle, and a UCF CAH article written about Professor Wehr shortly after his passing in 2021. https://orlandomemory.info/topics/oral-history-interview-with-dr-paul-w-wehr/ https://www.pinecastlehistory.org/publications-books-pamphlets/ https://news.cah.ucf.edu/news/remembering-paul-w-wehr/https://stars.library.ucf.edu/knightshistorycast/1030/thumbnail.jp

Ries impact crater sedimentary conglomerates: Sedimentary particle 'impact pre-processing', transport distances and provenance, and implications for Gale crater conglomerates, Mars

    No full text
Terrestrial impact cratering events produce anomalous rock fragmentation and alteration, and form sedimentary basins that are out of equilibrium with the local geomorphological environment. Assessement of their initial deposits, crater erosion and infilling, lacustrine environments and biology can provide important insights into similar features on Mars. Here we report on fluviodeltaic conglomerates associated with the 26km diameter Miocene Ries impact structure (target: sediments overlying crystalline basement) with respect to shock features, grain size distribution, roundness, and potential parent rocks (provenance). The poorly sorted conglomerates form coarsening-upwards cycles associated with a delta-mouth bar system, with subangular to subrounded pebbles derived from crystalline rock impact breccia deposits. Pebbles comprise a wide range of lithologies and states ranging from fresh and solid to intensively impact-fractured, friable crystalline rocks, including shatter cones. Shocked quartz grains, however, are restricted to the sand fraction. The latter observation points to suevite as an additional, but subordinate source of the conglomerates. Granulometric analysis indicates that, in contrast to being derived from weathering of bedrock, impact brecciation of the parent crystalline rocks generated the initial grain size distribution of the conglomerates (i.e., preprocessing). This concept of “impact preprocessing” helped to defne the provenance, the post-impact sedimentologic history and the sediment transport distances of the conglomerates. Post-impact fluvial transport leads to the outwash of fine fractions into the prodelta subenvironment, and an increase in roundness and mean diameter in the residual conglomerates (i.e. hydraulic sorting). On the basis of the characteristics of the ejecta deposits and the present-day locations and occurrences of crystalline rock impact breccias and blocks in the northwestern Ries crater segment analyzed, a transport distance of less than 3.5km is derived for these impact-preprocessed conglomerates. Reconstruction of the initial distribution and composition of the primary ejecta layer indicates that the conglomerates composed solely of crystalline rock had a maximum transport distance less than 6.5km, i.e., within the closed basin of the Ries impact structure. In contrast to traditional interpretations of conglomerates, requiring long transport distances from bedrock source regions to deposition to ensure sufficient rounding and sorting, the rounding and sorting associated with these short transport distances are explained by preprocessing of parent rocks by impact brecciation and enhanced susceptibility to abrasion. Consequently, transport distances of conglomeratic fragments associated with impact craters, such as Gale crater on Mars, are likely to have been only a few kilometers, and derived from nearby ejecta, most likely from the inner crater walls. This Ries crater-based preprocessing and transport model implies that the unusual Gale crater conglomeratic fragments are likely to represent the immediate target material excavated by the Gale cratering event, rather than fragments transported laterally from greater distances outside the crater

On Aristotle's "proairesis" as interpreted by Sebastian Petrycy of Pilzno : on "Choice or undertaking"

    No full text
The article is an abbreviated and in some places a modified version of the previously published text. Here are the data on the first edition: Smolak, Maciej. 2018. "On Aristotle's Proairesis in the Interpretation of Sebastian Petryce of Pilzno. On 400th Anniversary of the publication of Nicomachean Ethics translated and commentared by Sebastian Petryce of Pilzno ”, Archiwum Historii Filozofii i Myśli Społecznej 63: 327-348. The author shows that the expression is not used for a reason and demonstrates that proairesis in the full sense of the word creates: [1] undertaking in the sense of designating the goal to be achieved; [2a] own choice in the sense of a preferential choice, that is, choice one course of action rather than another; [2b] own choice in the sense of the decision about proceeding with accepted course of action; [3] undertaking in the sense of starting (and continuing) the action leading to the achieving of the designated goal. In so doing, the author proves that Aristotle's proairesis, according to interpretation of Sebastian Petrycy of Pilzno, is constituted by “choice” and “undertaking” which are its features or elements

Practical philosophy in Sebastian Petrycy's output as one of the pillars in the renaissance pedagogical-philosophical concept

Postrzega on etykę jako naukę o przygotowaniu do dobrego życia. This outline is an attempt to remember the work of Sebastian Petrycy of Pilsen - Polish renaissance medical doctor, poet, philosopher and, first of all, a translator of Aristotle's works to Polish, and the creator of native philosophical terminology within the field of practical philosophy, which in its autonomous pedagogical-philosophical concept, created while working on Stagirite's works translation, constitutes an axis of the country's reform on multiple fields. Sebastian Petrycy focussed on practical philosophy, which might have become available to every reader of Przydatki. The Arethological point of view seems to be the essential philosophical and pedagogical perspective for Sebastian Petrycy. Ethics is perceived as a science preparing for good life. Ethics is expected to teach good behaviour, abstaining from evil and supporting will with good manners. It's worth highlighting the fact that the author of Przydatki believes the concept of arete houses the aspect of a social life's democratization. Everybody, as Sebastian Petrycy of Pilsen claims, may earn the name of a noble man if they live virtuous lives

The Idea of Christ-Centred Spiritual Life in the Teaching of St. Józef Sebastian Pelczar

    No full text
    O. Łukasz Buzun, Jasna Góra – Częstochowa. The author focuses on the idea of Christ-oriented spiritual life as taught by St. Józef Sebastian Pelczar, a bishop in Poland at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. His pastoral activity and scientific works were based on the teaching of Christ and contributed to the rebirth of spiritual life of the society. Józef Sebastian Pelczar’s idea of spiritual life is discussed in its two main aspects : 1) sacramental/ecclesiastical and 2) prescriptive/educational. In both cases Jesus Christ is perceived as the Master. In the centre of Józef Sebastian Pelczar’s concept there are the questions of the role of evangelical mysteries of the life of Christ, the problem of the cooperation between man and God’s grace and, finally, the need to change one’s life following the pattern of Jesus. The author illustrates his theses with biblical and theological sources with particular regard to the works by Józef Sebastian Pelczar.9799

The sketch recalls the personality and literary works of Sebastian Petrycy, a Polish Renaissance writer. The author recalls his volume Horatius Flaccus w trudach więzienia moskiewskiego na utulenie żalów in the context of Petrycy’s philosophical and pedagogical activity, analyzing his ode Studnia kolegiacka. The interpretation of Ode III 13 shows the sources of inspiration of the Renaissance poet. Petrycy, translating Horace’s odes in early 17th century, adapted elements of Aristotelism, Horatianism, stoicism and aretology to Polish conditions. Petrycy also used the rules of rhetoric and parenesis in a strictly humanist stylistics. A significant issue of the sketch are also discussions on the classification of Petrycy’s odes from the viewpoint of theory of literature. The text tries to remind Sebastian Petrycy’s poetry in a different and wider context than the one connected with research on Polish Horatianism, humanist versification or Russo-Polish relations of early 17th centur

This article addresses the appraisal of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music by Johann Mattheson, specifically the commentary on the cantata Ich hatte viel Bekummernis, BWV 21 which that Hamburg-based theorist included in a 1725 issue of his periodical Critica musica. Musicologists disagree as to the interpretation of Mattheson’s words. However, most authors see them as derisive criticism of the cantata. In this article, the author polemicises with that view and analyses Mattheson’s statement in a wider and deeper context. W niniejszym artykule podjęto polemikę z taką opinią, analizując wypowiedź Matthesona w szerszym i głębszym kontekście
