The following thesis describes the 320-hour internship carried out by Matteo Schievano at RiskApp S.r.l. The company, founded in 2015 and headquartered in Conselve (PD), developed and it’s still maintaining a video inspection tool used for checking buildings eligible for a potential insurance coverage. The tool allows to conduct the inspection remotely by using a common smartphone, but the actual usage of the tool highlighted the need to develop a recording functionality of the transmitted video: this would allow to recover footage that were lost due to a network connectivity problem. The purpose of the internship was to test how to add the mentioned functionality, which will be integrated into the main tool after the internship

Automatic NMR-based protocol for assessment of honey authenticity

: 1H NMR analysis of organic extracts of honey is a powerful technique to confirm its botanical origin, thanks to the presence of signals that are specific to each floral typology. Similarly, signals from bee metabolites provide an important tool to verify honey entomological origin. Here, we present a method for honey screening that does not require any detailed analysis of the NMR spectrum for the detection and quantification of such markers. Our approach is based on the measurement of two spectral parameters, named entomological factor (EF) and aromatic factor (AF), calculated by integration of well-defined regions of the NMR spectrum. The values of EF and AF can reveal direct or indirect dilution of honey with sugar syrups. This method was tested on honeys of different floral origins and could identify all adulterated samples previously recognized by official techniques. Notably, several samples found compliant by official methods were proven non-genuine by the proposed approach

CARATTERIZZAZIONE NMR E ANALISI STATISTICA DI OLI DOP VENETI

High-field 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) was used to analyze 14 extra virgin olive oils coming from two PDO (Protected Denomination of Origin) areas of Veneto. The methodology previously applied to olive oils coming from Mediterranean areas has been applied to olive oils coming from area with different pedoclimatic conditions. Selected 1H NMR resonance were submitted to two different statistical methods namely Analysis of Variance and Principal Component Analysis. Extra virgin olive oils from the same geographical area were clearly grouped, indicating that multivariate statistical analysis applied to 1H NMR data can be used to check the Protected Denomination of Origin. Preliminary results show that it is also possible to distinguish olive oils coming from different micro-areas of the same DO

Elastic properties of 2D auxetic honeycomb structures- a review

    No full text
The research field of auxetics, materials or structures exhibiting a negative Poisson's ratio, has received attention because of the unusually advantageous material properties that can be achieved with it, such as high indentation resistance and high shear resistance. In the past decades, the theoretical understanding of different factors that can lead to an auxetic behaviour has advanced greatly, resulting in a rapid increase in the number and type of the structures designed to exhibit this behaviour. These now exploit a number of different mechanisms, providing a large selection of properties which can be tailored for the specific needs. This review aims to describes the auxetic structures that have currently been identified and designed, describing the different approaches utilised to define their mechanical behaviour and analysing their structural properties, limitations, and potential field of application. In particular, the focus lies on the major works within the field, discussing their limitations and addressing works done to complement them

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Hidden β-γ Dehydrogenation Products in Long-Chain Fatty Acid Oxidation Unveiled by NMR: Implications on Lipid Metabolism

We present a comprehensive analysis of the initial α,β-dehydrogenation step in long-chain fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO). We focused on palmitoyl-CoA oxidized by two mitochondrial acyl-CoA dehydrogenases, very-long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD) and acyl-CoA dehydrogenase family member 9 (ACAD9), both implicated in mitochondrial diseases. By combining MS and NMR, we identified the (2E)-hexadecenoyl-CoA as the expected α-β-dehydrogenation product and also the E and Z stereoisomers of 3-hexadecenoyl-CoA: a “γ-oxidation” product. This finding reveals an alternative catalytic pathway in mitochondrial FAO, suggesting a potential regulatory role for ACAD9 and VLCAD during fatty acid metabolism

Time series of diabetes attributable mortality from 2008 to 2017

Purpose Diabetes is a growing health problem. The aim of this study was to capture time trends in mortality associated with diabetes. Methods The mortality database of the Veneto region (Italy) includes both the underlying causes of death, and all the diseases mentioned in the death certificate. The annual percent change (APC) in age-standardized rates from 2008 to 2017 was computed by the Joinpoint Regression Program. Results Overall 453,972 deaths (56,074 with mention of diabetes) were observed among subjects aged >= 40 years. Mortality rates declined for diabetes as the underlying cause of death and from diabetes-related circulatory diseases. The latter declined especially in females - 4.4 (CI 95% - 5.3/- 3.4), while in males the APC was - 2.8 (CI 95% - 4.0/- 1.6). Conclusion We observed a significant reduction in mortality during the period 2008-2017 in diabetes either as underlying cause of death or when all mentions of diabetes in the death certificate were considered

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
