Gor'kijBogdanov : Aperçu sur une correspondance non publiée

    No full text
Jutta Scherrer, Gor'kii - Bogdanov. An appraisal of unpublished correspondence. The author traces the course of Gor'kii's relationship with Bogdanov as it emerges from his correspondence, to dale unpublished, with the philosopher and political figure during the years 1908-1910, a period marking the first crisis within the Bolshevik fraction - the bitter struggle between its main leaders of the moment, Lenin and Bogdanov. Gor'kii actively adopts a position in favor of the latter: for him Bogdanov's political and cultural vision represents a real and coherent alternative to Lenin's "orthodoxy". This article aims to give no more than a brief account of Bolshevism in the early years of its development : other, more important elements drawn from the collection of documents are analysed in a forthcoming publication.Jutta Scherrer, Gor'kij - Bogdanov. Scherrer Jutta. Epiphanies at the Supermarket: An Interview with Brigitte Kronauer

    No full text
Brigitte Kronauer has been called "the greatest German [female] fiction writer of our time" (Marcel Reich-Ranicki). Her stories, novels, and criticism have established her as a uniquely sophisticated literary voice and won her many literary prizes. Kronauer's trademarks are her laser-sharp vision, her luminous prose, and the intricate structures of her uncannily realistic literary universes. Finding the mystical in the mundane and exposing human foibles with subtle irony, Kronauer creates, in the words of one critic, epiphanies at the supermarket. Beneath its everyday surface her fiction deals with the eternal human questions of life, death, and love. At a still deeper level it circles around philosophical issues such as our futile attempts to find truth in our own constructs of reality. In her interview with Jutta Ittner the author reflects on her individual path to writing. She describes the role of literature in creating a semblance of order in a multifaceted reality, and she discusses the structure of her literary universes, her characters and their aspirations, and the importance of animals for man's quest for a meaningful life. Finally, Kronauer explains how she sees herself in terms of women's literature and indicates where her writing is headed

Zwei Berichte über die Entwicklung des Martyrerkultus in Manastirine

    No full text
Manastirine is an ancient funerary complex north of Salona and near its episcopal centre. The most prestigious martyrs of Salona (those of the persecution of Diocletian) were buried there. After the fall of Salona (about 620), however, their relics were taken to Rome on the initiative of a Dalmatian pope. There they were installed in a specially built chapel in the Lateran, which was decorated with their portraits. It was very natural for the bishops of the fourth century and of the beginning of the fifth century to be buried near the saints, not far from their cathedral, as well as a large number of distinguished or more humble Christians. The excavation is an old one. It is very well known because of the debate it aroused at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century (it contradicted local legends), because of the personality of the principal excavator, Mgr Bulić, and because of the repercussions of the publication by the Austrian archaeologist Egger, who reconstructed the history of the site in 1926. A Franco-Croatian team undertook the task of reinterpreting the site, with supplementary excavation, from 1985 to 1999. It has just published a large volume giving the detail of its re-examination, which on several vital matters contradicts the scheme of development and the chronology proposed by Egger. There are two detailed reports which discuss a number of key points. J. Dresken-Weiland is the author of the volume of the Repertorium christlicher Sarkophagen which has reviewed the Adriatic sarcophagi carrying decoration (in the broadest sense), and she has devoted her thèse d’habilitation (as yet unpublished) to inhumation in sarcophagi, relying largely on the examples from Salona. As a result she sticks to the absolute and relative chronology of the burials and of the funerary monuments built round the tomb of the martyrs. B. Brenk is the well-known historian of the art of the late antique and early Byzantine period. He is more interested in the cult of the martyrs. He is surprised that burial-place of the martyrs, although in the open air, kept an almost private character in spite of the inhumation of bishops, members of the clergy and of leading citizens up to the 430s – a late date for the construction of a proper church. Both authors discuss the relationships between pagans and Christians in the light of the origin of the cemetery, the date and use of the areae, and of the ‘chapels’ (which are in fact mausolea with apses, without tombs of martyrs, and without liturgical fittings). In conclusion N. Duval makes a number of factual points. Concerning B. Brenk’s essay, he notes the persistence of a number of examples of the traditional interpretation, which have sometimes been contradicted by the facts of the recent analysis. He also defends the method followed, which has set bounds to comparisons which should be made with the monuments of Salona.

Sleep and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical activity : biological processes associated with psychosocial adjustment during childhood and adolescence

    No full text
ABSTRACT: Sleep and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) activity are two biological processes that play a vital role for physical and mental health as well as general well-being. The aim of this cumulative dissertation containing three studies is to complement and extend existing research on the role of sleep and the HPA activity for psychosocial adjustment during childhood and adolescence, as well as in very preterm children and to further extend knowledge on in-home PSG sleep. Taken together, findings showed that less restorative sleep and a shorter sleep duration were associated with poorer psychosocial adjustment during mid- dle childhood and adolescence. A meditational model further showed that less restorative sleep partially accounted for poorer psychosocial adjustment in very preterm children. In ado- lescence, the association of sleep and psychosocial adjustment was mediated by daytime tiredness and behavioral persistence and furthermore, a delayed school start time was associ- ated with longer sleep duration and less daytime tiredness. Additionally, a blunted HPA activ- ity was related to more externalizing problems. Although very preterm children showed a faster decline in evening cortisol levels compared to full-term children, HPA activity did not mediate the association between prematurity and psychosocial adjustment. Furthermore, find- ings showed that sleep assessed via in-home PSG remained stable over one and a half years and thus indicated that in-home PSG constitutes a reliable measure of childrenÕs habitual sleep. The present dissertation emphasizes the importance of restorative and sufficient sleep for psychosocial adjustment during middle childhood and adolescents and even more so in very preterm children representing a population of children at risk for poor psychosocial ad- justment

E-roadmapping : digital strategising for the new economy / by Stefan P. Bornheim , with Jutta Weppler , Oliver Ohlen.

Includes bibliographical references and index.xv, 192 pages :This book introduces e-Roadmapping - a new tool set for executives and entrepreneurs who need to strategize in the new economy. The rapidly changing commercial environment and new focus on innovation and speed of execution means that for many organisations the old models of assessing the competitive landscape and forecasting a long-term strategy are dead. So how are company leaders to plot their future and maintain a sense of direction for their business? e-Roadmapping examines ways of dealing with this complexity and provides a tool-kit for formulating strategy with an entrepreneurial spirit. Stefan Bornheim demonstrates models of 'mapping' the business landscape, pin-pointing areas of competition and planning an organisation's transformation. Based on extensive in-company research and full of examples of the models in action, e-Roadmapping is a stimulating look at the sharp end of the new e-Conomy

Sociological implications of scientific publishing: Open access, science, society, democracy and the digital divide

    No full text
Claims for open access are mostly underpinned with 1. science—related arguments (open access accelerates scientific communication); 2. financial arguments (open access relieves the serials crisis); 3. social arguments (open access reduces the digital divide); 4. democracy—related arguments (open access facilitates participation); and, 5. socio—political arguments (open access levels disparities). Using sociological concepts and notions, this article focuses strongly on Pierre Bourdieu\u27;s theory of (scientific) capital and its implications for the acceptance of open access, Michel Foucault\u27;s discourse analysis and the implications of open access for the concept of the digital divide. Bourdieu\u27;s theory of capital implies that the acceptance of open access depends on the logic of power and the accumulation of scientific capital. It does not depend on slogans derived from hagiographic self—perceptions of science (e.g., the acceleration of scientific communication) and scientists (e.g., their will to share their information freely). According to Bourdieu\u27;s theory, it is crucial for open access (and associated concepts like alternative impact metrics) to understand how scientists perceive its potential influence on existing processes of capital accumulation and how open access will affect their demand for status. Foucault\u27;s discourse analysis suggests that open access may intensify disparities, scientocentrism and ethnocentrism. Additionally, several concepts from the philosophy of sciences (Popper, Kuhn, Feyerabend) and their implicit connection to the concept of open access are described in this paper
