Methods of engraving Mesopotamian cylinder seals: experimental conformation
Previous observations of the intaglios on quartz cylinder seals from Western Asia suggested that they had been engraved by one or more of four basic techniques, that is, micro-chipping, filing, drilling and wheel-cutting. In this paper we test our earlier observations and interpretations experimentally. Examination and comparison of experimentally engraved features with the seal intaglios was made directly with a binocular microscope and also by examination of impressions with a scanning electron microscope. Successful replication was achieved using tools of flint, chalcedony, copper, bronze and iron together with quartz and emery abrasives

An XMM-Newton study of the 401 Hz accreting pulsar SAX J1808.4+3658 in quiescence
SAX J1808.4-3658 is a unique source, being the first low-mass X-ray binary showing coherent pulsations at a spin period comparable to that of millisecond radio pulsars. Here we present an XMM-Newton observation of SAX J1808.4-3658 in quiescence, the first that assessed its quiescent luminosity and spectrum with a good signal-to-noise ratio. XMM-Newton did not reveal other sources in the vicinity of SAX J1808.4-3658, likely indicating that the source was also detected by previous BeppoSAX and ASCA observations, even with large positional and flux uncertainties. We derive a 0.5-10 keV unabsorbed luminosity of L(x) = 5 x 10(31) ergs s(-1), a relatively low value compared with other neutron star soft X-ray transient sources. At variance with other soft X-ray transients, the quiescent spectrum of SAX J1808.4-3658 was dominated by a hard (Gamma similar to 1.5) power law with only a minor contribution (less than or similar to10%) from a soft blackbody component. If the power law originates in the shock between the wind of a turned-on radio pulsar and matter outflowing from the companion, then a spin-down to an X-ray luminosity conversion efficiency eta similar to 10(-3) of is derived; this is in line with the value estimated from the eclipsing radio pulsar PSR J1740-5340. Within the deep crustal heating model, the faintness of the blackbody-like component indicates that SAX J1808.4-3658 likely hosts a massive neutron star (M greater than or similar to 1.7 M.)

Divergent evolution of (betaalpha)8-barrel enzymes.
The (betaalpha)8-barrel is the most versatile and most frequently encountered fold among enzymes. It is an interesting question how the contemporary (betaalpha)8-barrels are evolutionarily related and by which mechanisms they evolved from more simple precursors. Comprehensive comparisons of amino acid sequences and three-dimensional structures suggest that a large fraction of the known (betaalpha)8-barrels have divergently evolved from a common ancestor. The mutational interconversion of enzymatic activities of several (betaalpha)8-barrels further supports their common evolutionary origin. Moreover, the high structural similarity between the N- and C-terminal (betaalpha)4 units of two (betaalpha)8-barrel enzymes from histidine biosynthesis indicates that the contemporary proteins evolved by tandem duplication and fusion of the gene of an ancestral 'half-barrel' precursor. In support of this hypothesis, recombinantly produced 'half-barrels' were shown to be folded, dimeric proteins
