Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Characterization of anthropogenic organic matter and its interaction with direct yellow 27 in wastewater: Experimental results and perspectives of resource recovery
The concept of natural organic matter of anthropogenic origin is introduced and its characteristics and interaction with chemical pollutants are investigated by adopting several distinct analytic methodologies. Scanning electron microscopy indicates that the used sample of anthropogenic organic matter (AOM) has an amphiphilic nature, which allows its supramolecular organization in water. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, in turn, gives a clear indication about the presence of polysaccharide markers, lipidic and amidic fractions, and suggests the absence of free organic acid. AOM sample and AOM mixed with dye sample were examined by the threedimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra and the nuclear magnetic resonance monodimensional spectra. The results highlighted the interactions occurring between the AOM and the reactive dye, selected as a representative chemical pollutant. Electron Spin Resonance confirms that the used AOM is able to completely include the dye in its structure. Overall, the obtained results indicate that the fate, transport, and toxicity of pollutants in the environment can be drastically influenced by the presence of AOM
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. In this letter, we discuss possible alternatives and future perspectives in the therapy of Meniere’s disease. Special attention should be paid to the role of dietary restrictions for glucose in patients with Meniere’s disease, as there is a strong evidence about the presence of insulin receptors in the saccule, the main structure affected by pathological changes due to endolymphatic hydrops; to the possible use of endogenous antisecretory factor administered in specially processed cereals; and to the effects of low-dose intratympanic gentamicin, especially in patients with intractable Meniere’s disease
Acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland: from pathogenesis to management: a literature review
Purpose Acinic cell carcinoma (ACCs) is uncommon malignant epithelial neoplasm of the salivary glands; the most common presentation is a well-defined painless solid mass. Diagnosis of ACCs is frequently complicated, due to its similarity with benign tumors. Methods A review of the literature available on ACCs was carried out. Studies were sourced from PubMed with searching of relevant headings and sub-headings and cross-referencing. Results There are no clear characteristics of ACCs found on CT, MRI and ultrasound imaging. The management of the ACC, a rare malignancy of the parotid gland, is often difficult and controversial. Radical surgery is the best treatment option. The role of radiotherapy remains controversial: the precise indications and oncologic effects of adjuvant radiotherapy in ACC of the parotid gland are not well known. There is insufficient literature regarding the chemotherapy for metastatic ACC. Conclusion Knowledge about ACC, a rare malignancy of parotid gland, has changed over the past few decades. More clinical randomized works would be needed, both to assess the real effectiveness of radio and chemotherapy and to have an unanimous consensus about their indications

The synthesis of the C-2-symmetric bis-(20S)-5alpha-23,24-bisnorchol-16-en-3beta,6alpha,7beta-triol-22-terephthaloate (1), active as Na+-transporting transmembrane channel, has been achieved in 16 steps (10% overall yield) starting from the commercially available androst-5-en-3beta-ol-17-one (3). The straightforward stereospecific functionalization of the side-chain, via the 'ene' reaction, and the successful regioselective terephthaloylation of the C-22 hydroxy group, illustrate the efficiency of the synthetic strategy
