Existential angst: a reading of Saul Bellow's Seize the Day
Many scholars have been discussing the Existentialism in Saul Bellow's production. This work analysis the American author's novel Seize the Day through a bibliographical review. Applying presupposes defended by Jean-Paul Sartre to the novel it was possible to find connections with the French thinker's ideas though the novel lacks some density when compared to other Existentialist works
Landscapes as mentalscapes : Saul Bellow's use of setting in Henderson the Rain King
Saul Bellow and the Role of the Intellectual in 20th Century Society
As contemporary readers constantly “lower the bar”, writers tend to follow the same trend, thus creating a vicious circle. Their novels become more and more “unintellectual” in order to appeal to the common man. And this happens not as much because the writers wish to remain loyal to their readers as it happens out of fear of rejection. The role of the modern writer is therefore to resist the temptation of writing for the masses and to assume the higher responsibility of forcing the masses out of their ignorance, of reorienting the self towards knowledge, exchange of ideas in order to create the ability to filter what an impure society might confront us with. The evolution from rights to liberty and from liberty to openness needs to be constantly adjusted and only the intellectuals can alert his fellow citizens of the danger behind the famous statement “the right to the pursuit of happiness”: that of transforming oneself into a simple consumer, getting satisfaction from a fake reality, a simulacra, complacent about himself/herself and always willing to choose the easiest way around. Most modern readers simply do not take the challenge, they just wish to be entertained. But entertainment without intellectual effort creates not a reality, but an illusion and Bellow is aware of the growing need for illusion of the contemporary society: “A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep”; “You could see the suicidal impulses pushing strongly. You wondered whether this Western culture could survive universal dissemination – whether only its science and technology or administrative practices would travel, be adopted by other societies”. Israel's worst king? : the story of Ahab in light of its relationship to the stories of Saul, David and Solomon
In the story of King Ahab (I Kgs 16.29-22.40), Ahab is declared to be the worst person in the Hebrew Bible(I Kgs 21.25)seemingly because he repeats the infamous crimes of King Saul, King David and King Solomon. Because of the similarities in the behaviour of Ahab with his three predecessors, however, the story is a story about these three kings as well. As a result of the associations, Ahab's evil status is challenged. Views of the character Ahab in other literary traditions lend credence to the suggestion that Ahab does not live up to his bad name, and a close reading of the text of the story supports the suggestion. Such a reading leads to seeing King Ahab as a character who
is a composite of Saul, David and Solomon at their worst. These correspondences between the four kings lead to several results. Without saying that Ahab is not wicked, the correspondences (relatively) normalise the moral character of Ahab (in that Saul, David and Solomon may be considered 'normal'), while they diminish the moral character of the three kings by their association with Ahab. As a result, Ahab is viewed in a different and better light than what he is declared to be, while Saul, David and Solomon are viewed
in a lesser light. The diminishing after-effect also leads to rereading the stories of Saul, David and Solomon in the light of the story of Ahab. Read from such a perspective, their stories become stained by the stigma of being associated with Ahab
Differential utilisation of sulfur compounds for H(2)S liberation by nitrogen-starved wine yeasts
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) liberation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae wine yeast was studied as a function of different inorganic sulfurous precursors using a model winemaking system. In a medium analogous to grape juice, and following nitrogen starvation of the yeast culture, a combination of 5 mM sulfate and 300 μM sulfite was more potent than 5 mM sulfate alone as a substrate for H2S liberation. Sulfate plus sulfite allowed H2S liberation in greater amounts, at higher rates and over a longer period than sulfate alone, by most of the five yeast strains examined. Nevertheless, a sulfate-only medium still supported the liberation of between 11 and 86% of the H2S observed in the sulfate plus sulfite medium. After nitrogen depletion of the medium, sulfate uptake by yeast cells was stable for at least 7 h and even increased in a cycloheximide-sensitive manner by ca 35%. The relatively limited formation of H2S from sulfate is therefore not attributable to losses of sulfate transport by the culture as might occur through elevated permease turnover. Similarly, an inhibition of sulfate transport could not account for the lesser formation of H2S from sulfate because cultures starved of nitrogen in the presence of sulfate continued to accumulate sulfate in excess of the rates of H2S liberation. Instead, sulfate deprivation/supplementation experiments implied that limited utilisation of sulfate was due to an inhibition of sulfate reduction to sulfide. Experiments also highlighted a contribution by intracellular sulfur pools of between 35 and 70% to the total H2S liberated from sulfate by nitrogen starved yeasts. As a component of this pool, glutathione was a precursor for 40% of the H2S liberated from sulfate-containing medium.Hallinan, Christopher P. ; Saul, David J. ; Jiranek, Vladimi
