No full textThroughout the development of linguistics from its beginning until to-day, there are generally two main aspects that are given emphasis by linguists. The first aspect deals with theoretical and conceptual is-sues, whereas the second focuses on the application of linguistic theo-ries to various sub-disciplines of linguistics, such as dialectology, pho-netics and phonology, semantics, pragmatics, grammar, discourse analysis and several others. Without any intention to downgrade or lessen the importance of attention given to the application of theories, propose that the theoretical and conceptual aspect ought to be given more serious attention and greater effort, especially because some problems and issues emerging in the application of theories are based on theoretical and conceptual issues. This paper discusses one of the fundamental theoretical and conceptual aspects of knowledge, includ-ing linguistics, that is epistemology. The discussion also covers the nature and reality of language, the role and contribution of language in the development of human's concept of "self" and its realization and issues related to the development of linguistics in the Malay world.Secara kasarnya, ada dua aspek yang selama ini mendapat perhatian peneliti linguistik. Yang pertama ialah aspek teori dan konsep, sementara yang kedua ialah aspek penerapan teori dalam pelbagai subdisiplin linguistik seperti dialektologi, fonetik dan fonologi, semantik, pragmatik, tatabahasa, wacana dan sebagainya. Dengan tidak bermaksud meremehkan dan mengurangkan sumbangan penelitian yang bersifat penerapan teori, penulis berpendapat bahawa penelitian dan pembicaraan yang berkaitan dengan teori dan konsep perlu diberi perhatian yang lebih serius. Hal ini demikian kerana sebahagian masalah dan isu yang timbul dalam upaya penerapan teori berakar daripada masalah teori dan konsep. Kertas kerja ini mengupas salah satu aspek teori dan konsep yang asas dalam disiplin ilmu, termasuk linguistik, iaitu aspek epistemologi. Antara aspek yang diberi perhatian termasuklah hakikat bahasa, teori kelahiran bahasa, sumbangan bahasa dalam pembinaan konsep serta realisasi din insan dan isu-isu yang berkaitan dengan perkembangan disiplin linguistik di alam Melayu

No full textThis article focuses on the role of language and language education in the development of a civilization and a civil society. Discussion is based on the Islamic philosophical point of view. Certain aspects have been emphasized, particularly on the role of language and language education as the basis of mankind's existence. The term "rational animal" given to mankind refers to the role of language as well as mind in the realization of the concept of the real self, and their existence becomes a prerequisite in the process of developing a civilization. The second aspect emphasized in this article is the role of language as a means of knowledge acquisition and dissemination, as is clearly illustrated in verse 31, Surah al-Baqarah in the Qur 'an, regarding the fact of Prophet Adam was given by God the name of all things in the world. Thus, the process of language learning and teaching as an effort to master the language is very much connected to the process of knowledge acquistion and dissemination, especially through the implementation of the language across the curriculum program. In relation to the two issues, the idea of the islamization of knowledge, including linguistics has been discussed. The idea is to adopt Islamic worldview or weltanschauung in order to get the right perception of the reality of language and its role in the development of a civilization and a civil society.Makalah ini berfokus pada upaya menghuraikan peranan bahasa dan pendidikan bahasa dalam pembinaan tamadun dan masyarakat madani. Huraian dilakukan dengan berasas pada pendekatan falsafah Islam. Dalam makalah ini, penulis menumpukan perbincangan pada beberapa asas pembinaan tamadun dan masyarakat madani. Yang pertama ialah peranan bahasa dan pendidikan bahasa dalam pembentukan konsep diri insan yang digelar haiwan natik sebagai makhluk teristimewa ciptaan Tuhan. Adanya akal dan bahasa sebagai bahagian penting diri yang hakiki itulah yang memungkinkan manusia membina kebudayaan dan selanjutnya tamadun. Yang kedua ialah peranan bahasa sebagai wahana pemerolehan dan pengembangan ilmu sebagaimana yang diisyaratkan dalam ayat 31 Surah al-Baqarah tentang peristiwa Nabi Adam a.s. dikurniai oleh Tuhan nama sekalian kejadian di alam sarwajagat, iaitu isyarat yangjelas tentang pentingnya bahasa sebagai wahana ilmu. Dengan demikian penguasaan bahasa serta upaya belajar dan mengajarkan bahasa berkait rapat dengan proses pemerolehan dan pengembangan ilmu dan hal ini direalisasikan dalam pelaksanaan gagasan bahasa merentas kurikulum. Selanjutnya dibincangkan upaya pengislaman ilmu yang turut meliputi pengislaman disiplin linguistik, dengan pengertian penerapan tasawwur atau pandangan sarwa Islami dalam penanggapan tentang hakikat bahasa dalam konteks pembinaan tamadun
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
