No full textThe most recently discovered Human coronavirus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome - Coronavirus - 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is certainly the best-known coronavirus of all, as it is considered a successful invader. First identified in late 2019, it generated the current pandemic of coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) when it spread across the planet in only a few months. Like some other members of the same family of viruses, SARS-CoV-2 can infect different types of human cells, however, the epithelia of the lungs and larynx are the main targets thus preferentially causing respiratory infections. Mortality associated with COVID-19 alongside the impacts on health, education, the economy and individual and social well-being are currently a concern for the whole world. These are not only due to the effects of the disease, but also the pandemic control measures imposed by governments across the world, namely mandatory isolation, and we are still looking to adapt to this new way of life alongside a virus that was previously unknown. However, humans and other animal species have long lived side by side with other coronaviruses, many of which unknown to most people, some quite harmless whilst other potentially lethal. In that sense, this is no different.
This book aims to assemble and disseminate information about the origin, evolution and pathogenesis of animal and human coronaviruses in a simple and accessible way, and through this clarify readers’ doubts and fears as well as the rationale underlying transmission prevention actions.
The main text of the manuscript is accompanied by two types of additional information for optional consultation; more in-depth information about some of the mentioned concepts (know more) and a set of questions & answers, providing the reader with the opportunity to clarify doubts relating to the content of each section. For the preparation of this book, we counted on the collaboration of technicians, researchers and academics in the areas of microbiology, epidemiology, animal health and public health. During the production and editing process, a board game and cards (Beat Corona) were also produced. These further explored some of the concepts mentioned in this book, including behaviours related to life in society and their implications in the transmission of diseases caused by coronaviruses, including COVID-19. This game can be used as a pedagogical resource in the classroom context, or as a mere leisure and learning activity.Originally published in Portuguese as "Coronavírus dos animais e do Homem: evolução e patogenia do vírus e prevenção de doença, 2020", sponsored by APBE - Associação Portuguesa de Biologia Evolutiva, Íngreme Post Production, Lda, and INIAV – National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinarian Research.

A aclamação da República: imagens do ideário político catarinense

Programa de Pós-graduação em HistoriaA presente pesquisa estuda a passagem da Monarquia para o regime republicano na Província de Santa Catarina, tendo como principal objetivo analisar o discurso construído pelas lideranças políticas republicanas buscando legitimar a República como um regime político #pacífico# e #popular#. Frustrando as expectativas de que o novo regime seria instituído através de uma reforma constitucional no Congresso Nacional, com o apoio e a participação do povo, a proclamação da República foi realizada pelas lideranças políticas do país e da Província através da prisão e da deposição de autoridades políticas da Monarquia. Diante destas circunstâncias, as lideranças políticas do novo regime se empenharam na produção de cenas e discursos através da imprensa local com o objetivo de atribuir à República o sentido de um novo momento político para Santa Catarina, forjando uma imagem pacífica da ascensão republicana, com amplo apoio de um #povo# calmo e esclarecido. Analisando os jornais locais da década de 1880 e memórias escritas de políticos dessa época # Duarte Schutel, Gustavo Richard, João José Theodoro da Costa e Vidal Ramos -, procurou-se identificar o lugar atribuído ao #povo# na política republicana e o modo como as lideranças do novo regime assimilaram em seus hábitos e discursos os novos valores que emergiam com a nascente República. The present research studies the passage of the Monarchy for the republican regime in the Santa Catarina province, having as principal objective to analyze the speech constructed for the leaderships republican politics seeking to legitimate the Republic as a politician #pacific# and #popular# regime. Frustrating the expectations of that the new regime would be instituted through a constitutional reform in the National Congress, with support and participation of the people, the proclamation of the Republic was carried through by the politics leaderships of the country and the Province through the arrest and the deposition of politics authorities of the Monarchy. Ahead of these circumstances, the leaderships politics of the new regime had pledged in the production of scenes and speeches through the local press with objective to attribute to the Republic the direction of a new politician moment for Santa Catarina, forging a pacific image of the republican ascension, with ample support of a calm and clarified #people#. Analyzing local periodicals of the 1880´s decade and written memories of politicians this time - Duarte Schutel, Gustavo Richard, João José Theodoro da Costa and Vidal Ramos -, it was looked to identify the place attributed to the #people# in the republican politics and the way as the leaderships of the new regimen had assimilated in its habits and speeches the new values that emerged with the rising Republic

Duarte reflects from the present about the different consequences of Brazil’s recent past, specifically during the COVID-19 crisis. The author adopts a theoretical attitude that allows him to think the particular situation of Brazil from the perspective of several authors, among which we highlight the figure of Hannah Arendt.Pandemic and crisis of democracy de André Duarte (2023) entreteje y muestra de manera clara cómo el des-gobierno de Jair Bolsonaro estuvo estrechamente ligado a la pérdida de confianza y a la profunda crisis democrática. Tomando distancia de textos y ensayos sobre la pandemia que pensaron de manera especulativa acerca del futuro, Duarte reflexiona sobre el pasado reciente de Brasil durante la crisis sanitaria y sus consecuencias desde el presente. Para ello, y trabajando bajo la forma de un ensayo, adopta una actitud teorética por medio de la cual analiza y adopta una serie de herramientas conceptuales para poder pensar la situación particular de Brasil, a partir del aporte de diferentes autores y autoras entre las que destaca Hannah Arendt.Pandemic and Crisis of democracy (2023), de André Duarte, tece e mostra claramente como o desgoverno de Jair Bolsonaro esteve intimamente ligado à perda de confiança e à profunda crise democrática. No full textThis article proposes an analysis of the political nature that the Angolan author Ruy Duarte de Carvalho perceives in landscape, in the book As paisagens propícias (2005). Dedicating his literary production to the preservation of the memory of the Kuvale peoples, who are nomadic, rural and illiterate, and aiming to keep alive their traditions and way of life, Ruy Duarte ends up proposing reflections on the consequences of colonialism in Angolan society that adhered to the values of Western civilization.Este artigo propõe uma leitura do caráter político que o autor angolano Ruy Duarte de Carvalho percebe na paisagem, no livro As paisagens propícias (2005). Dedicando sua produção literária à preservação da memória dos povos Kuvale, povos nômades, rurais, analfabetos e ambicionando manter vivas as suas tradições e o seu modo de vida, Ruy Duarte acaba por propor reflexões sobre as consequências do colonialismo na sociedade angolana que aderiu aos valores da civilização ocidental
When Covid 19 Came to Town: Remote Work and Human Resources Challenges by the Organisational Practices of the Portuguese Institutions
No full textThe pandemic scenario from 2020 to 2022 has cast a spotlight on remote work (RW). Thus,
this recent past has brought a new reality to organizations and a novel way of organizing work. The
results of the qualitative study for the Portuguese case of the EURECA Project are presented here. The
guiding question of this research was, 'What role does remote work play in addressing the new challenges
in human resources/career management arising from the Covid-19 pandemic scenario in Portuguese
institutions?' The study followed a case study approach, based on the assumptions of practice-based
theory. Ten Portuguese organizations were surveyed, with input from their directors or human resources
representatives. The results highlight the new challenges faced by the hybrid work model, such as
communication and ICT, internationalization and HR, workforce diversity, and team leadership, among
others. Practical implications are also discussed, and some recommendations for these organizational
practices are presented
