Microvessel quantitation in intraductal and early invasive breast carcinomas.
OBJECTIVE: To study the angiogenic process in intraductal carcinoma of the breast, with and without a small focus of stromal infiltration, and to compare the microvessel density between the in situ phase and the early infiltration phases of breast cancer.
STUDY DESIGN: Microvessel density (number of microvessels per square millimeter of neoplasia) was quantitatively evaluated on anti-factor VIII-immunostained histologic sections obtained from 10 ductal carcinomas in situ (DCIS) (category A), 22 DCIS with a small focus of stromal infiltration (category B), 10 microinvasive carcinomas (category C), 12 T1a carcinomas (category D) and 20 T1b carcinomas (category E).
RESULTS: The five categories of lesion had different values for microvessel density (P = .0017). Category A had microvessel density lower than category B (P = .0005). Category B had microvessel density higher than categories C, D and E (P = .0028, .0133 and .0033, respectively).
CONCLUSION: Microvessel density seems to be a feature related to each crucial step in the early phases of neoplastic progression

Energy-efficient Object Detection and Tracking on Embedded Smart Cameras by Hardware-level Operations at the Image Sensor
Embedded smart cameras have limited processing power, memory and energy. In this paper, we introduce two methodologies to increase the energy-efficiency and the battery-life of an embedded smart camera by hardware-level operations when performing object detection and tracking. We use the CITRIC platform as our embedded smart camera. We first perform down-sampling at hardware-level on the microcontroller of the image sensor rather than performing software-level down-sampling at the main microprocessor of the camera board. In addition, instead of performing object detection on whole image, we first estimate the location of the target in the next frame, form a search region around it, then crop the next frame by using the HREF and VSYNC signals at the microcontrollerof the image sensor, and perform detection and tracking only in the cropped search region. Thus, the amount of data that is moved from the image sensor to the main memory at each frame, is greatly reduced. Thanks to reduced data transfer, better use of the memory resources and not occupying the main microprocessor with image down-sampling and cropping tasks, we obtain significant savings in energy consumption and battery-life. Experimental results show that hardware-level down-sampling and cropping, and performing detection in cropped regions provide 54:14% decrease in energy consumption, and 121:25% increase in battery-life compared to performing software-level downsampling and processing whole frame
Processi biologici avanzati per il trattamento di reflui ad alto contenuto di nutrienti e valutazione delle emissioni gassose
La diffusione di impianti di digestione anaerobica in ambito agricolo ha determinato la necessità di individuare post-trattamenti dei surnatanti, per ridurre le pressioni ambientali legate allo spandimento dei digestati, in accordo ai limiti in azoto N imposti dalla Direttiva 91/676/CEE. Le prestazioni del processo automatizzato di nitritazione-denitritazione in continuo in reattore unico sono state valutate su un pilota da 3 m3, alimentato distintamente con surnatanti anaerobici di origine bovina e suina, entrambi puri ed addizionati con siero di latte. I risultati hanno evidenziato, per ogni matrice, rimozioni di N tra l’80 ed il 90%, mentre il monitoraggio delle costanti cinetiche Kn e Kd ha confermato che il processo ha operato stabilmente al 90% via nitrito. I valori numerici delle costanti, circa tre volte i valori ottenibili da processi biologici convenzionali, sono variati a seconda del refluo trattato, diminuendo al ridursi dell’azoto ammoniacale N-NH4 influente. L’analisi dell’effluente ha evidenziato inoltre rimozioni del fosforo P dell’ordine del 72%, e riduzioni di COD e TSS comprese tra il 60 ed il 70%. Il monitoraggio in continuo delle emissioni gassose, calcolate come % dell’N-NH4 influente, ha permesso di riscontrare valori pressoché nulli di biossido di azoto NO2, ed in media inferiori allo 0,011% e 0,009%, rispettivamente per protossido (N2O) e monossido (NO) di azoto. I risultati mostrano che le emissioni aumentano al crescere della concentrazione di nitriti in fase liquida, per carichi maggiori di N-NH4 in ingresso. Inoltre, la rimozione terziaria dei nutrienti da parte della microalga Scenedesmus Obliquus, immobilizzata in alginato di calcio, è stata valutata su fotobioreattori a letto fluido ed impaccato, alimentati in continuo in modalità upflow, senza immissione di aria né CO2. I risultati hanno mostrato rimozioni di N e P superiori al 95% e facilità nella separazione della biomassa algale dal flusso liquido, per un possibile riutilizzo
'Conatus' et 'corpora simplicissima'. Hobbes et Spinoza sur la nature et l’origine du mouvement
La toute récente historiographie nous a fourni différentes considérations sur le rapport entre le concept de Hobbes de conatus et celui de Spinoza. Notre but, dans ce cas, est plutôt celui de déplacer la réflexion sur la relation possible entre le conatus de Hobbes, dans la formulation qu’il reçoit dans De corpore, et l’idée des corpora simplicissima que Spinoza argumente dans la première partie du ‘petit traité’ de physique de l’Ethique. Conatus et corpora semplicissima constituent tous les deux le début du mouvement, ils en sont la ‘détermination’ première et la plus universelle. Tous les deux sont des concepts ou des notions purement rationnels, qui – éludant toute explication de nature métaphysique ou théologique dans le domaine physique, et évitant le recours, étranger aux deux philosophes, aux définitions ‘générales’ – veulent exprimer ‘opérativement’ la réalité immanente aux corps ab aeterno du mouvement. Laissant de coté la question philologique et historique de Hobbes en tant que ‘source’, question trop complexe pour être affrontée ici, on se concentrera plutôt sur la définition de ces concepts chez les deux auteurs, en sondant le rôle fondatif d’une nouvelle philosophie de la nature et d’une interprétation du mécanicisme sous l’enseigne d’une idée de potentia /power comme clef pour comprendre la matière, contre l’idée cartésienne de celle-ci en tant que moles quiescens
Mutual Calibration of Camera Motes and RFIDs for People Localization and Identification
Achieving both localization and identication of people ina wide open area using only cameras can be a challengingtask, which requires cross-cutting requirements : high reso-lution for identication, whereas low resolution for having awide coverage of the localization. Consequently, this paperproposes the joint use of cameras (only devoted to local-ization) and RFID sensors (devoted to identication) withthe nal objective of detecting and localizing intruders. Toground the observations on a common coordinate system,a calibration procedure is dened. This procedure only de-mands a training phase with a single person moving in thescene holding a RFID tag. Although preliminary, the resultsdemonstrate that this calibration is sufficiently accurate tobe applied whenever dierent scenarios, where area of over-lap between the eld of view (FoV) of a camera and theField of sense" (FoS) of a (blind) sensor must be efficientlydetermined
