Educación política para una democracia radical
This article takes as starting point the understanding that liberal democracy is in crisis. The article draws upon a systematic review of the literature to examine alternative democratic discourses, including radical democracy as conceived by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. Following their work, it is understood that political education should facilitate opportunities for students to open, expand and change our existing democratic arrangements. Political education framed in these terms could follow three types of pedagogies: pedagogies of difference, pedagogies of articulation and pedagogies of equivalence. The article concludes by drawing upon existing qualitative research by author Edda Sant to consider examples of what these pedagogies could look like in practice

Voices : drama and the development of speaking and acting in public spaces
This chapter raises questions on the role of ‘voice’ pedagogies through engagement with the work of Freire, Butler, Boal and Lessac. The chapter begins by interrogating different ways in which ‘voice’ have been conceptualized within citizenship education. This leads to a consideration of the theoretical and practical synchronicities of ‘voice’ and ‘performance’ including the question, can citizenship education approach speaking/acting in public spaces as a performative practice? Contrasting examples from Chile and Brazil, the chapter then briefly examines the pedagogical relationship between speaking/listening to question how can discussions about drama education help us to build equal dialogues. Performance is then first reconceptualised as ‘voice’ in terms of a physical and abstract presence within socio-political discourses that allows an inclusive realignment to the practise of participation itself through dramaturgical methods. The chapter concludes rereading voices in relation to Boal’s ideas of a sensitive and symbolic thinking, and questioning how, through “voice work” social and ideological forces in our bodily manifestation can be explored, identified, and contextualized

Political education in times of populism: towards a radical democratic education
"In professional and academic contexts nothing is more important than helping people to understand and engage with democratic society. Sant has written an excellent book which helps greatly towards that end. She has developed incisive new arguments about the nature of contemporary politics and education. Using the most recent as well as classic literature, she explores key ideas and issues. Through wide ranging discussions and by referring to her own valuable empirical work she characterizes and creates thoughtful insights and innovative pedagogical approaches. This book achieves the very difficult task of illuminating complex ideas at the same time as helping to determine practical ways to achieve social justice through education. Political education has been neglected for too long. This book is a bold new step in its achievement." Ian Davies, Emeritus Professor, University of York, UK This book examines political education in times of democratic crisis, polarisation and uncertainty. Using populism as a diagnostic tool, the book scrutinises current democratic practices and considers alternatives for future social studies and citizenship education. The author examines contemporary events including Brexit, the Catalan referendum for independence and protests in Chile to ask how democratic educators can respond to times of crisis. Centered on themes of knowledge and ideology, the book draws together political philosophy and educational research to map out, critically analyse and offer alternatives to dominant debates on political education. It will be of interest and value to scholars examining the relationship between democracy and educational theory and practice.</p

(2) what teaching and assessment methods can be used to promote democracy?, and (3) what are the challenges of promoting democracy? In a context where teachers are expected to promote democracy, this session aimed to increase participants understanding, ability, and confidence to consider democratic education in your practices
