No full textM.R. Sapin (1925–2015) was a professor at I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, honorary academician of Russian academy of medical sciences (1988), and an outstanding representative of the Moscow anatomical school of the middle of XX – early XXI century. From the very beginning of his medical training, Mikhail Romanovich got interested in anatomy, especially in angiology and lymphology, and later concentrated on its studying. The author of more than 30 text books and guidelines for schools, universities, and colleges, Mikhail Romanovich was the doctoral and thesis advisor of 51 Ph.D. and approximately 70 MD dissertations. M.R. Sapin made a significant contribution to the development of anatomical education providing the departments with a various range of dry and wet specimens. His stunning and effective work as a tutor was highly appreciated by his students and colleagues, Russian and foreign anatomists. M.R. Sapin was the leader of the Laboratory of Functional Anatomy since 1972, president of the International Association of Morphologists (1992–2006), chairman of the expert commission of Higher Attestation Commission (1959–1994), etc. A man of a great willpower, M.R. Sapin faced a lot of obstacles in his life and research work but overcame that all successfully. The article presents the most important facts of anatomist’s career and lifetime.</jats:p
A Comparative Study Of Intertidal Molluscan Communities In Sandy Beaches, São Sebastião Channel, São Paulo State, Brazil
No full textThe aim of this work was to study the molluscan communities in two intertidal environments and their relationship with selected environmental variables. The study areas are located along São Francisco and Engenho d'Agua beaches (São Sebastião Channel, São Paulo State, Brazil). These sites are structurally similar with sediments of coarse sand and pebbles that facilitate settlement of molluscan species. The area was subdivided into low, intermediate and high intertidal levels where the samples were taken. Temperature, salinity, grain size, organic matter, and calcium carbonate content were analyzed as environmental variables. The high species diversity recorded in the study sites was due to the occurrence of organisms on consolidated and unconsolidated substrates. However, differences in the specific composition of the two areas were associated with local differences in sediment constituents and the presence of urban waste water in São Francisco. In general, few species were common to both sites, with higher richness and number of individuals in Engenho d'Água. No full textNadat de Rijn op 20 December 1919 tot even beneden den middelbaren zomerstand 1901-1910 (M.R.) was gedaald vertoonde zich op die rivier een sterke en vrij snelle was, waardoor het water te Keulen tot 6m +M.R. bij het einde van het jaar steeg. In de daarop volgende 11 dagen daalde de waterstand tot 1.5m +M.R. om daarna in 5 dagen weder te rijzen tot den zeer hoogen stand van 7m +M.R. Door een aanvankelijk sterken later flauweren val liep de stand weder terug tot 1.5m +M.R. op 30 Januari. Ook op de Maas vertoonden zich twee dicht op elkaar volgende sterke wassen. Bij den aanvang van den eersten was op 19 december stond het water te Maastricht op ruim 1m +M.R. en steeg het in 6 dagen tot 4.37m +M.R.; in de daaropvolgende 9 dagen bleef de stand steeds hoger dan 4m +M.R. en daalde toen tot ongeveer 2m +M.R. op 10 Januari 1920. De tweede was trad op laatsgenoemde datum in waarbij het water oplied tot 4.94m +M.R. op 15 Januari. Het water daalde daarna dadelijk en was op 29 Januari tot ongeveer 2m +M.R. weggevallen. Bij den tweeden was op Rijn en Maas werden de hoogst bekende waterstanden bij open rivieren overtroffen te Keulen met 7 cm en te Maastricht met 2 cm. De rivieren waren ijsvrij.Hoogwaterversla
Quantification of C and N stocks in grassland topsoils in a Dutch region dominated by dairy farming
No full textEstimates on soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (N) stocks in soils cannot be directly calculated from routine soil analyses, since these often lack measurements on soil bulk density (Bd). Hence, flexible pedotransfer functions are required that allow the calculation of SOC stocks from gravimetrically determined SOC contents. The present paper aimed to: (1) quantify SOC and N stocks in grassland topsoils for a Northern Dutch region dominated by dairy farming and (2) analyse the relationships between SOC and bulk density at the field level. As estimates of SOC and N stocks are potentially affected by soil compaction, the combined measurements on soil bulk density and soil organic matter (SOM) were also evaluated with respect to critical limits for soil compaction using soil density (Sd) for sandy soils and packing density (Pd) for clay soils. The SOC and Bd measurements were done in the upper 0·1–0·2 m of grasslands at 18 dairy farms, distributed across sandy, clay and peat soils. Both farm data and grassland management data were collected. Non-linear regressions were used to analyse relationships between Bd and SOM. Significant non-linear relationships were found between gravimetric SOC contents and bulk density for the 0–0·1 m layer (R2=0·80) and the 0·1–0·2 m layer (R2=0·86). None of the fields on sandy soils or clay soils indicated signs for limited rooting in the topsoil although some fields appear to approach the critical limit for compaction for the 0·1–0·2 m layer. Stocks of SOC in the top 0·2 m at farm level were highest in the peat soils (21·7 kg/m2) and lowest in the sandy soils (9·0 kg/m2). Similarly, N stocks were highest for farms on peat soil (1·30 kg/m2) and lowest for farms on sandy soil (0·60 kg/m2). Floatation of Buried Submarine Pipeline under Cyclic Loading of Water Pressure -Numerical and Experimental Studies-
No full textA dynamic response of a submarine pipeline buried in sandy seabed sediments to water loading generated by harmonically oscillating water-table vertical movements is examined in the present report experimentally and numerically. The aim of small-scale laboratory experiments was: (1) to record time-histories of pipeline vertical displacements, and (2) to observe a shape of slip surface of an overburden sand body involved in breakout together with the pipeline. A parametric study was carried out in order to investigate the influence of two meaningful factors, that is the depth of burial and the specific gravity of pipeline, on a gradual upward displacement of the pipeline. Based on a numerical finite-element 2D-analysis of the hydrodynamic pore pressure and effective stresses oscillations in the pipeline vicinity, an analysis of the pipeline stability potential is presented, in which all the experimental cases tested are verified.
