Grassland management, soil biota and ecosystem services in sandy soils

    No full text
Recent legislative restrictions on the use of fertilizers and irrigation, and a quest for sustainable farming systems have drawn renewed attention to the functioning of the soil and the ecosystem services it provides. Soil biota play an important role in the provision of these ecosystem services, which may be influenced by grassland management. The two objectives of this thesis were 1) to gain insight into the effect of different grassland management measures on soil biota in sandy soils; and 2) to explore the effect of grassland management on the ecosystem services provided by soil biota

Esperienza ed evento della verità. Pratica filosofica e astrazione scientifica nel pensiero di A.N. Whitehead

    No full text
This article analyzes the relationship between philosophy, experience and event in A.N. Whitehead’s thought. From the critics of the concept of object, the author retraces and describes the peculiar “abstract-concrete dialectic”, at the center of the researches concerning the perceptual experience. Furthermore, according to Whitehead’s later works, she demonstrates how the philosophical practice is different from all other kinds of science, although it requires science itself because of the co-implication of object and event, abstraction and recognition

    No full text
Gesualdo Bufalino first published Il Guerrin Meschino in 1991 in a non-commercial edition. In 1993, after a deep revision, he re-published his work with publisher Bompiani: the novel has a modified plot, and the author decided to insert three new poems in addition to the opening and closing poems, formerly present in 1991’s edition. This paper, in its entirety supported by handwritten material preserved at Fondazione Gesualdo Bufalino (Comiso), is divided in two parts: the first part illustrates the differences between the first and the second edition, the second part provides a critical edition of the five poems

A Comparative Study Of Intertidal Molluscan Communities In Sandy Beaches, São Sebastião Channel, São Paulo State, Brazil

    No full text
The aim of this work was to study the molluscan communities in two intertidal environments and their relationship with selected environmental variables. The study areas are located along São Francisco and Engenho d'Agua beaches (São Sebastião Channel, São Paulo State, Brazil). These sites are structurally similar with sediments of coarse sand and pebbles that facilitate settlement of molluscan species. The area was subdivided into low, intermediate and high intertidal levels where the samples were taken. Temperature, salinity, grain size, organic matter, and calcium carbonate content were analyzed as environmental variables. The high species diversity recorded in the study sites was due to the occurrence of organisms on consolidated and unconsolidated substrates. However, differences in the specific composition of the two areas were associated with local differences in sediment constituents and the presence of urban waste water in São Francisco. In general, few species were common to both sites, with higher richness and number of individuals in Engenho d'Água. Differences in environmental variables and in species distribution between the two areas were indicated by Canonical Correspondence Analysis, which also revealed that grain size, salinity and calcium carbonate content played a more important role in species distribution than did the organic matter content.65191103Amaral, A.C.Z., Ecologia e contribuição dos anelídeos poliquetos para a biomassa bêntica da zona entremarés, no litoral notre do Estado de São Paulo (1979) Boletim do Instituto Oceanográfico, 28, pp. 1-52Morgado, E.H., Lopes, P.P., Belúcio, L.F., Leite, F.P.P., Ferreira, C.P., Composition and distribution of the intertidal macrofauna of sandy beaches on São Paulo coast. Hoogwaterversla

Quantification of C and N stocks in grassland topsoils in a Dutch region dominated by dairy farming

    No full text
Estimates on soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (N) stocks in soils cannot be directly calculated from routine soil analyses, since these often lack measurements on soil bulk density (Bd). Hence, flexible pedotransfer functions are required that allow the calculation of SOC stocks from gravimetrically determined SOC contents. The present paper aimed to: (1) quantify SOC and N stocks in grassland topsoils for a Northern Dutch region dominated by dairy farming and (2) analyse the relationships between SOC and bulk density at the field level. As estimates of SOC and N stocks are potentially affected by soil compaction, the combined measurements on soil bulk density and soil organic matter (SOM) were also evaluated with respect to critical limits for soil compaction using soil density (Sd) for sandy soils and packing density (Pd) for clay soils. The SOC and Bd measurements were done in the upper 0·1–0·2 m of grasslands at 18 dairy farms, distributed across sandy, clay and peat soils. Both farm data and grassland management data were collected. Non-linear regressions were used to analyse relationships between Bd and SOM. Significant non-linear relationships were found between gravimetric SOC contents and bulk density for the 0–0·1 m layer (R2=0·80) and the 0·1–0·2 m layer (R2=0·86). None of the fields on sandy soils or clay soils indicated signs for limited rooting in the topsoil although some fields appear to approach the critical limit for compaction for the 0·1–0·2 m layer. Stocks of SOC in the top 0·2 m at farm level were highest in the peat soils (21·7 kg/m2) and lowest in the sandy soils (9·0 kg/m2). Similarly, N stocks were highest for farms on peat soil (1·30 kg/m2) and lowest for farms on sandy soil (0·60 kg/m2). For the sandy soils, the mean SOC stock was significantly higher in fields with shallow groundwater tables

Floatation of Buried Submarine Pipeline under Cyclic Loading of Water Pressure -Numerical and Experimental Studies-

    No full text
A dynamic response of a submarine pipeline buried in sandy seabed sediments to water loading generated by harmonically oscillating water-table vertical movements is examined in the present report experimentally and numerically. The aim of small-scale laboratory experiments was: (1) to record time-histories of pipeline vertical displacements, and (2) to observe a shape of slip surface of an overburden sand body involved in breakout together with the pipeline. A parametric study was carried out in order to investigate the influence of two meaningful factors, that is the depth of burial and the specific gravity of pipeline, on a gradual upward displacement of the pipeline. Based on a numerical finite-element 2D-analysis of the hydrodynamic pore pressure and effective stresses oscillations in the pipeline vicinity, an analysis of the pipeline stability potential is presented, in which all the experimental cases tested are verified. All important component forces (e.g., hydrodynamic uplift force) associated with floatation phenomenon of the buried submarine pipeline are considered and quantified

In 2014, Amirbegov Y.M.'s monograph titled "Mechanics of Thinking" or "Ontological Basis of the Subject" was published, which dealt with a philosophical question: the relationship of matter with consciousness and time of our being. But since the monograph duplicated the thesis conceived by the author and did not go beyond the material presented in it, on the advice of the consultant the author of the monograph is preparing its second edition in an expanded version with a new title: " Ontology of Causal Basis of Man", attracting his mentor, the author of "The Theory of Time or Principle of Formation of Matter Forms" Amirbegov M.R., as a co-author of this book, Adhering to the opinion that matter between past and future temporal conti-nuity of eternity is reduced to nothing and in reality there remains only a causeless "Nothing", the authors of this book from a clean sheet, but with baggage of knowledge about objective forms of being and causeless reality with its possibili-ties, build an unparalleled theoretical model of human integrity, answering the question: what does a man, his sensorium, consciousness, his thinking apparatus and thought itself, why and how? The authors submit this book to the judgment of the reader
