Obscured accretion from AGN surveys
No full textRecent models of super-massive black hole (SMBH) and host galaxy joint evolution predict the presence of a key phase where accretion, traced by obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) emission, is coupled with powerful star formation. Then feedback processes likely self-regulate the SMBH growth and quench the star-formation activity. AGN in this important evolutionary phase have been revealed in the last decade via surveys at different wavelengths. On the one hand, moderate-to-deep X-ray surveys have allowed a systematic search for heavily obscured AGN, up to very high redshifts (z≈5). On the other hand, infrared/optical surveys have been invaluable in offering complementary methods to select obscured AGN also in cases where the nuclear X-ray emission below 10 keV is largely hidden to our view. In this review I will present my personal perspective of the field of obscured accretion from AGN surveys

No full textMichael Rubbo’s groundbreaking work has had a deep and enduring impact on documentary filmmaking worldwide, though his name has remained relatively unknown. In The Documentary Art of Michael Rubbo, author D.B. Jones traces Rubbo’s filmmaking from his days as a film student at Stanford, through his twenty years at the National Film Board of Canada, where Rubbo developed his distinct documentary style. Jones then describes Rubbo’s post-NFB venture into feature film directing, followed by Rubbo’s return to his native Australia, first as an executive with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and later as a director of feature-length documentaries and maker of short, personal films for YouTube. A Morphological Optical Survey of Nearby AGN
No full textWe present preliminary results of an optical survey of a spectroscopically selected sample of nearby AGNs (z < 0.1). The aim of the program that we are currently carrying out is to demonstrate that the activity phenomenon is strongly correlated to galaxy interactions. In detail, we want to study the morphology of our sample of galaxies in order to reveal the presence of features like bars, rings, double nuclei, isophotal distortions and tidal tails, most of which are not detectable on the POSS plates. The work is based on the broad band analysis of B, V and R images, the study of their photometric parameters and the results of the application of a Laplacian adaptive filter, able to enhance hidden and faint structures
The gravitationally lensed, luminous infrared galaxy IRAS F10214+4724 observed with XMM-Newton
No full textWe report on a short XMM-Newton observation of the gravitationally lensed, luminous infrared galaxy IRAS F10214+4724 at z 1⁄4 2:3. A faint X-ray source is detected at 4r. The observed 0.5–2 keV (1.7– 6.6 keV in the rest-frame) flux is 1:3 1015 erg cm2 s1 and the spectral slope in the rest-frame 1– 10 keV band is C 2. These results agree with those obtained from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, given the large uncertainties in both measurements. While possible evidence for excess emission above 5 keV is seen, we suspect this excess might be either spurious or not related to the infrared galaxy

83166.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)Everyone would agree that urban development, especially when involving the building of residential areas, should be accompanied by sufficient and good public infrastructure and facilities. We all want neighborhoods with the necessary roads, green areas, social facilities, affordable housing and public spaces of high quality. At the same time, nowadays, governments are facing severe cuts in public expenditure. So who is going to pay for all that quality? In the Netherlands and in many other countries, achieving these public goals has become a problem, especially in the regeneration of deteriorated inner cities sites. This book offers insight in how the economic value increase that arises from urban development can serve to finance the quality we want, without the need for public subsidies. The findings and recommendations made in this book focus on Western Europe, mainly on successful and alternatively less successful recent experiences in Spain, England and the Netherlands. Public bodies can use the recommendations to create the necessary conditions to improve the involvement of property developers and landowners in the financing of infrastructure and facilities. Property developers and landowners can find formulas for private-public partnership that can lead to lower development costs and risks, allowing them to pay for good infrastructure and facilities while maintaining profitability. Scholars will find here the theoretical backgrounds for this relevant topic.
