Selfie katsoo takaisin
Get PDFKirjallinen opinnäytetyö käsittelee selfietä, eli mobiililaitteen avulla kuvattua digitaalista omakuvaa osana vallitsevaa kuvakulttuuria sekä taiteilijan omaa tuotantoa. Selfie syntyi käsitteenä vasta 2010-luvulla, mutta se on saavuttanut valtavan suosion, ja jättänyt jälkensä valokuvakulttuuriin. Tutkielma asettaa selfien taidehistorialliselle jatkumolle sekä peilaa sitä nykytaiteeseen. Samalla viivalla tarkasteltavana ovat sekä klassikoiksi nousseet valokuvataiteen omakuvat että julkisuuden henkilöiden ja teinityttöjen itsestään ottamat selfiet. Tekstin rajaus on erityisesti naispuolisten taiteilijoiden omakuvissa sekä nuorten naisten kuvaamassa selfiessä, ja teksti nojaa feministisen kuvatutkimuksen keskeisiin ajatuksiin katsojasta ja katseen kohteesta (subjekti/objekti).
Tekstissä käsitellään myös selfietä verrattuna vallitseviin pohjoismaisen valokuvataiteen maneereihin, erityisesti poispäin kääntyneeseen ihmishahmoon ja kasvojen peittämiseen. Nykyvalokuvataiteessa henkilö on kääntynyt poispäin katsojasta. Selfie katsoo takaisin.
Tutkielma kysyy, millä tavoilla selfie on muuttanut valokuvattua omakuvaa, ja esittelee ilmiön tuomia haasteita ja mahdollisuuksia omakuvalla vaikuttamisessa taiteessa. Työ tulee siihen tulokseen, että taiteilijaomakuvan käsite kaipaa päivittämistä. Teksti seuraa taiteilijan oman opiskeluaikaisen työskentelyn kulkua sekä muutosta symbolisesta ja rakennetusta valokuvasta nopeaan ja myötäelävään mobiilikuvaan ja selfieen. Tutkielman näkökulma on nuoren, selfiekulttuurin keskellä elävän ja siinä toimivan naistaiteilijan.This written thesis focuses on the selfie – a new form of self-portraiture taken with a mobile device. This extremely popular phenomenon of the 2010s era has already made its mark on photographic culture, and has completely changed the artists way of working and thinking about self-portrait.
The aim of the work is to shed light on this new phenomenon and to find parallels with the selfie and artist self-portraits in history, focusing on self-portraits made by young women. Furthermore, the study compares the selfie to the conventions of modern Nordic photographic art, especially the ubiquitous motif of the figure photographed from behind.
The text is in conversation with Marjaana Kella’s work about the disappearance of the subject’s face in contemporary photography, and continues this discourse by connecting it to the selfie. While the subject has been withdrawn in recent photographic culture, the selfie has turned its gaze back on us. The thesis concludes that the whole concept of the artist self-portrait needs to be updated.
Besides addressing the subject at a larger scale, the thesis also follows the artist’s progress through her studies, moving on from staged and symbolistic self-portraits to more improvised and contemporary selfies
Gravity Blanket: on autistic artistic practice
No full textMy thesis consists of two artistic and one written component. The artistic component is a body of work called Gravity Blanket, which was partly exhibited at Kuvan Kevät graduating masters’ degree show at Exhibition Laboratory (Helsinki, Finland) in May 2021, and with some changes and additional work at Titanik gallery (Turku, Finland) in August 2021.
Gravity Blanket is a mixed media work consisting of photographic and sculptural pieces. It explores neurological queerness, embodied knowledge, touch, resilience and our culture of coping. The work draws on my personal neurodivergent experience, more specifically my experience of being autistic and diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Like many others on the autism spectrum, I sense my surroundings intensely and with overwhelming focus on details. With Gravity Blanket, I try to bring this experience of autistic perception to the center of my artistic work, both as a subject matter and as a method: I allow my sensitivities to inform my choice in materials and search for an embodied ‘autistic knowledge’ to guide my process.
In this written component of my thesis, I focus specifically on three individual works: Gravity Blanket (2021), Frayed polyester chiffon in green and fingers (2021), and Burnout Blanket (2021). This text is an account and reflection on two interlaced processes: one of creating the artworks and one of learning to navigate life and artistic practice as an autistic individual – both processes of learning and unlearning, queering, struggling and surviving, refusing and desiring. I discuss the major material and thematic shift in my artistic practice in relation to issues of accessibility and representation of autism and make connections between my work and contemporary theorisations of neurodivergence, glitch, and disability
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
