Nightlife reconsidered
This book tells the story of two prevention organizations from different countries. It is based
on twelve years of experience in the field with more than one and a half million prevention
materials distributed, over one thousand direct interventions in field, five studies on the use
of drugs and alcohol… It is a book about experience, learning, growing, enthusiasm and cooperation.
The collaboration between Slovenia’s DrogArt and Italy’s Etnoblog began two years
ago. Sharing a common pursuit in the field of harm reduction in nightlife, we first collaborated
within the scope of the Safe Coast project, which was endorsed by the European Commission.
The partnership was outstanding as years of experience mingled and merged and
intertwined with incredible facility. We realized immediately which methods were superior
and how each organization could benefit from the other’s know-how. DrogArt brought to the
table invaluable experiences with outreach activities, research, counseling and disseminating
information, while Etnoblog introduced the concept of subsidizing taxis to drive clubbers
to their destinations and back to reduce the risks related with driving under the influence.
Trieste’s Overnight Taxi concept was adopted across the border within three months as the
After Taxi project, which now operates in three major Slovenian cities. Providing a safe ride
and encouraging partygoers to take a taxi to and from parties have thus become key elements
of safer partying.
This book is intended for all who are intrigued by or play an active role in nightlife. It is intended
for event organizers, club owners, legislators responsible for drafting and enacting
drug policies, and organizations working in the field of harm reduction related to drug or
alcohol use and STDs. Finally, it is intended for anyone willing to learn from our experiences
and to contribute to efforts to reduce the risks in nightlife settings
The use of drugs at after-parties
This work discusses the use of drugs in the context of nightlife in Slovenia, focusing primarily on after parties. Both the use of drugs and the after parties are analysed as a specific part of nightlife, arguing that this phenomena need to be understood sociologically and in a broader social context. Because after party as a phenomenon has not yet been thoroughly researched, this work first defines its characteristics and analyses the specificities of attending such events. The use of drugs during after parties is also discussed, focusing specifically on the patterns of drug use, on the difference between the patterns of drug use during parties and after parties, and on the subjective reasons for the use of drugs. Moreover, the work discusses the possible risks of attending after parties and of drug use as well as the consequences that visitors of after parties recognise as either negative or positive. On the basis of the recognised risks, this work further discusses the harm reduction measures, identifying those measures that are often used and recognised as necessary by the participants and those measures that the participants recognised as needed. This work argues that after parties differ from the rest of the nightlife on actual and symbolic level and that they are characterised by specific patterns of drug use as well as specific risks and consequences. Due to these inherent specificities, it is maintained that particular strategies of harm reduction need to be implemented. Some possible harm reduction measures for after parties are hence proposed
Needs and Challenges of Older People Moving into a Nursing Home
In my master\u27s thesis, I address the experience of moving to a care home from the perspective of elderly individuals and explore their needs and the challenges they face during this period. In the theoretical framework, I first present the period of old age and aging, and then describe the specific characteristics and needs typical of this stage of life. I continue with an overview of the social placement of aging and describe the care options for the elderly in Slovenia, with a focus on care homes. Finally, I focus on the process of moving to a care home and present some examples of good practices related to moving to a care home from different countries around the world. The main aim of the research presented in the empirical part was to explore the experiences of the elderly with the process of moving to a care home. I wanted to understand what their needs are (or have been) at different stages of the relocation, what challenges they encountered in this process, what helped them and what did not. I also aimed to determine how successfully the care home involved in the research responds to the needs of the elderly during the relocation process and which working strategies of the care home the elderly recognize as effective or wish to see changed. I used a qualitative research approach in this study.
The results indicate that the process of moving is an emotionally complex experience for the elderly, during which they face uncertainty, loneliness, loss of a sense of home, adjustment to a new way of life, and the search for their own identity. During this period, the need for personal relationships and the need for health and well-being are most pronounced. In facing the challenges of relocation, the two most important supportive factors are stable and loving relationships with loved ones and the availability of choices within institution. Prejudices and negative perceptions about life in a care home, as well as difficulties in adapting to a new environment or new roommates, make the move particularly challenging. Based on the findings, I conclude that in the future of long-term care, it would be sensible to enable elderly individuals to live in their home environment for as long as possible, and when moving to a care home, these facilities should aim to ensure autonomy, maintaining relationships with loved ones, and adapting care to the individual needs of the elderly
Why Slovenian students prolong their studies?
This diploma thesis discusses delaying of studies completion among Slovenian students. Not completing one’s studies, is in this thesis understood as not graduating in prescribed period of time – from enrolment to the end of the extra year of studies.
Delaying with degree completion is investigated in a wider context. Firstly issue is highlighted from the view of change in life course of today’s youth, which took place over the past decades. Topics of emerging adulthood, transition into adult roles, labour market etc., are discussed. Secondly this thesis examines socio-economic and individual (academic motivation, procrastination, academic self-image etc.) predictors for failing in completing studies in expected time.
Empirical part investigates reasons why students (of old study programs), in their opinion, have not finished their studies on time. Focus groups and individual interviews were used as main tools for investigating these reasons.
Based on the literature overview and needs expressed by the participants of the current research, I develop suggestions that could facilitate students transition from education to labour market and provide them with support for studies completion
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Social pedagogue in local community
Social pedagogy is science consisting of preventive work, work after the damage is already made, development of different work types, education, and social integrity of individuals’ irrespective age, groups or communities.
Local community is group of residents in one society, having the same interests. They exist independently from the government, but still, the approval of existence is important for the local community. Local community is the main source of local self-government, and for the residents it is the most common way to reach and fulfill democratic participation.
In this dissertation I was trying to investigate the civil parish Smlednik and also the needs of its people. The main goal was to discover if this community is in need of competences and knowledge, which could be brought with social educator.
Quick evaluation results have shown that having the social educator in local community is almost necessary since the issues are always there. Despite that fact residents have evaluated Smlednik as favorably.
There are two possibilities how to intervene in this community. One is to reach better communication with municipality and the second one is to deepen the relationships between residents. The ways to intervene in this community are following: integration of immigrants, educational courses, different events, practical courses
Characteristics of interactions in foster families by means of art therapy techniques
For both children and foster parents, transition into and life in a foster family may be, and often is, a difficult and stressful period. Through mutual interaction, both sides face the challenges related to accommodation, bonding and development of trust. Research suggests that almost all children living in foster families had, before being separated from their biological families, been exposed to multiple negative influences, and later, in foster families, show signs of insecure attachment style, which, in combination with the foster parents’ lack of awareness and understanding of the attachment phenomenon, exacerbates their status in the new environment and negatively affects family relationships. Some research indicates that systematic application of art therapy techniques and harmonisation of mutual interactions through creative work can be conducive to the establishment of relations of trust and closeness within the foster family, which, eventually, may help develop secure attachment in foster children. This research provides insight into the experiences of a foster family during the application of art therapy techniques and seeks to shed light on the participants' communication patterns that influence the development of secure attachment. The results of the research confirm how important the development of trust in foster families is as a process, which in the current circumstances, with little available support, is not taking the direction of developing secure attachment. Mutual harmonization and connection through a carefully designed and long-term implementation of an art therapy program, the results confirm, can be helpful to all members of foster families and facilitate the process of building trust and closeness, key prerequisites for well-being of children in alternative care
Problem of cyberbullying among primary school students and ways to change their response mode
Poudarjen je bil pomen opazovalcev spletnega nasilja, krepitev odnosa med učencem in učiteljem oz. strokovnim delavcem, krepitev preventivnih dejavnosti, vključevanje učencev v sprejemanje preventivnih dejavnosti in pa pomen izobraževanja strokovnih delavcev o spletnem nasilju in rabi IKT.The master thesis was about cyberbullying among students in elementary school, where I was interested in how the elementary school could change the way it responds or upgrade its system of operation in the mentioned phenomenon. In the theoretical part, I focused on bullying among students, its types and forms, and its prevalence. I described cyberbullying - its definitions, in what forms and in what way it manifests itself, what roles students take on cyberbullying and its prevalence in Slovenia and elsewhere. I presented various guidelines and recommendations related to the prevention of cyberbullying and the models and programs that have already been created to deal with cyberbullying among students. I also described the help points that people who have experienced violence can turn to.
The purpose of the master thesis was to investigate the phenomenon of cyberbullying among students at a selected elementary school through the eyes of the counseling service and students. I did this through the empirical part of the research in the form of qualitative research, where I conducted a semi-structured interview with two school counselors and five students who had already experienced cyberbullying (in the role of perpetrator, victim or observer). The results of the research showed that the interviewed persons are well acquainted with cyberbullying among students and describe it similarly to the authors in the theoretical starting point, perceive its specifics and define it as a phenomenon connected with the use of mobile devices and the internet. They are familiar with preventive activities, and the school counseling service faces various problems when dealing with cyberbullying among students, such as the lack of control over the phenomenon and the lack of authority to take action when it occurs. Some believe that the occurrence of online violence between students is not a concern of the school, since it does not take place on school premises. They gave suggestions on how the school and the school counseling service can react more appropriately and prevent online violence among students. To a large extent, the proposals coincide with the guidelines and recommendations on dealing with online violence among students, which are written in the theoretical starting point. They empasizet the importance of witness of cyberbullying, strengthening of the relationship between the student and the teacher/professional worker, the inclusion of students in the adoption of preventive activities and the importance of educating teachers about cyberbullying and the use of ICT
