Analytical model for calculating the nonlinear distortion in silicon-based electro-optic Mach-Zehnder modulators
In this study, an analytical model for calculating the nonlinear harmonic/intermodulation distortion for RF signals in silicon-based electro-optic modulators is investigated by considering the nonlinearity on the effective index change curve with the operation point and the device structure simultaneously. Distortion expressions are obtained and theoretical results are presented showing that optimal modulator parameters can be found to linearize it. Moreover, the harmonic distortion of a 1 mm silicon-based asymmetric MZI is RF characterized and used to corroborate the theoretical results. Based on the present model, the nonlinear distortion in terms of bias voltage or operating wavelength is calculated and validated by comparing with the experimental data, showing a good agreement between measurements and theory. Analog photonic link quality parameter like carrier-to-distortion is one of the parameters that can be found with that model. Finally, the modulation depth is measured to assure that no over-modulation is produced

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Nápoles y Josep Sanchis Sivera: una evocación personal (1902)
During the spring of 1901, the Valencian historian Josep Sanchis Sivera (1867-1937) made a very interesting tour that took him to visit ten Italian cities, including Naples. A certainly exciting and eloquent trip that, the following year, he recounted in all kinds of detail in the volume entitled Dos meses en Italia (Impresiones y recuerdos). In this way, in the course of that narration, full of artistic and historical references seasoned with anecdotes, the chapters dedicated to Naples stand out in an expressive way, a metropolis that the author discovered and evoked with erudition, emotion and good humor, with a obvious magnetism. Therefore, the work aims to analyze the places and people that Sanchis Sivera visited and met during his stay in Campania.
A photonic microwave filter based on an asymmetric silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator
[EN] A new approach for implementing an integrable photonic microwave filter based on exploiting the asymmetry of a CMOS-compatible silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator is demonstrated. The strong dependence of the modulator response with wavelength is exploited for achieving positive and negative taps and, therefore, a fully reconfigurable filter, without the complexity of previous approaches. Two filter responses with two and three taps are experimentally demonstrated, showing the proof-of-principle for frequencies up to 10 GHz and thus going one step further toward a full integration of the complete filter device in the CMOS-compatible silicon photonics platform. © 2009-2012 IEEE.Manuscript received May 16, 2013; revised June 12, 2013; accepted June 13, 2013. Non-Direct Encoding Method Based on Cellular Automata to Design Neural Network Architectures
Architecture design is a fundamental step in the successful application of Feed forward Neural Networks. In most cases a large number of neural networks architectures suitable to solve a problem exist and the architecture design is, unfortunately, still a human expert’s job. It depends heavily on the expert and on a tedious trial-and-error process. In the last years, many works have been focused on automatic resolution of the design of neural network architectures. Most of the methods are based on evolutionary computation paradigms. Some of the designed methods are based on direct representations of the parameters of the network. These representations do not allow scalability; thus, for representing large architectures very large structures are required. More interesting alternatives are represented by indirect schemes. They codify a compact representation of the neural network. In this work, an indirect constructive encoding scheme is proposed. This scheme is based on cellular automata representations and is inspired by the idea that only a few seeds for the initial configuration of a cellular automaton can produce a wide variety of feed forward neural networks architectures. The cellular approach is experimentally validated in different domains and compared with a direct codification scheme.Publicad
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
