Orest Novytskyi: supplements to the biography
No full textThe article reconstructs the biography of Orest Novytskyi (1806–1884), a prominent person in history of
Ukrainian academical philosophy, a philosophy professor of Kyiv Theological Academy and Kyiv University
of Saint Volodymyr, whose 210th birthday would have been on the 6th of February 2016. Based upon archival
documents and available historical sources, the author examines the philosopher’s career and specifies his
date and place of birth, as well as background and family relations. Special attention is given to Orest
Novytskyi’s theological and philosophical education received at Ostroh Theological School, Volhynia
Theological Seminary, and Kyiv Theological Academy. The author highlights Orest Novytskyi’s activities as
the professor of Poltava Theological Seminary and Kyiv Theological Academy, analyzes his activities as the
philosophy professor of Kyiv University of Saint Volodymyr, and accounts of the main stages of Orest
Novytskyi’s biography after he was fired from the university, as well as the circumstances which led to his
completely abandoning his philosophical pursuits. While reconstructing the biography, the author analyzes
the contents and role of Orest Novytskyi’s philosophical (especially in the field of history of philosophy)
contributions, emphasizing his prominent part in the formation of the spiritual-academic and university
philosophy in Kyiv in the 19th – the beginning of the 20th century. Special attention is also given to Orest
Novytskyi’s studies on history of religion (specifically, his research on history and faith of Doukhobors) and
the Bible studies (particularly, his contribution to the research of the Slavic Bible).Статтю присвячено видатній постаті в історії вітчизняної академічної філософії, професору
філософії Київської духовної академії та Університету Св. Володимира Оресту Марковичу Новицькому (1806–1884), 210-та річниця від дня народження якого виповнилася 6 лютого 2016 р. На підставі віднайдених архівних документів та історичних джерел автор реконструює життєвий шлях філософа, вносячи суттєві уточнення щодо дати і місця його народження, походження та родинних зв’язків. Особливу увагу приділено здобуттю Орестом Новицьким богословської та філософської освіти в Острозькому духовному училищі, Волинській духовній семінарії, Київській духовній
академії. Висвітлено викладацьку діяльність О. М. Новицького в Полтавській духовній семінарії та
Київській духовній академії. Проаналізовано його діяльність як професора філософії Університету
Св. Володимира. Окреслено основні віхи біографії О. М. Новицького після звільнення з університетської кафедри та обставини остаточного припинення філософської творчості. У процесі біографічної реконструкції автор аналізує зміст і значення творчого доробку О. М. Новицького в царині
філософських наук (особливо історії філософії) й увиразнює його значну роль у становленні духовно-академічної та університетської філософії в Києві ХІХ – початку ХХ ст. Значну увагу приділено
також студіям О. М. Новицького з історії релігії (зокрема вивченню ним історії та віровчення
духоборців) та біблієзнавства (зокрема його внеску в дослідження слов’янської Біблії)

A Genetic Study of Female Sterility in Neurospora crassa
No full textTitle: A Genetic Study of Female Sterility in Neurospora crassa, Author: Orest M. Mylyk, Location: ThodeIn a general way, this study was directed towards
the understanding of processes concerned with the sexual
reproduction of Neurospora crassa. It was prompted by an
observation of Threlkeld that crosses between Neurospora
strains derived from different genetic backgrounds
occasionally produce sterile progeny. This specific
project was concerned with finding naturally occurring
variants expressing some form of sterility, studying
their genetics and complementation, and characterizing the
mutants found for several properties. A search for sterility uncovered patterns of
perithecial and ascospore production among strains being tested for their ability to participate in crosses and
also resulted in the finding of a female sterile variant.
Subsequently a rather complex pedigree of crosses
involving female sterile strains followed by conidial
analysis and genetic and complementation studies of
selected strains revealed a total of eight mutants causing
this phenotype, all appearing to have arisen spontaneously
among some of the strains used. Some linkage data were
obtained, and the mutants were characterized for growth
characteristics and crossing ability under different
cultural conditions. Possible interpretations of the

No full textВидатний український історик, археограф, архівіст, джерелознавець, етнограф, науковий та суспільний діяч Орест Левицький (1848–1922) належав до представників старшої генерації київської школи істориків Володимира Антоновича в Університеті Св. Володимира. Вивчення життя, наукової діяльності та творчої спадщини Ореста Левицького розпочалося після смерті у 1922 р. і триває досі. У 2023 році виповнюється 175 років від дня народження вченого. У статті розглянуто доробок істориків України по вивченню персоналії Ореста Левицького за 1923 – 2018 рр. Київська школа істориків Володимира Антоновича була складовою частиною Школи істориків Університету Св. Володимира в ХІХ ст. Розвиток історичної науки в 1870–1890-х роках в Університеті Св. Володимира можна віднести до четвертого періоду розвитку школи істориків Університету Св. Володимира в ХІХ ст. Київська школа істориків Володимира Антоновича дала світові близько сорока видатних і талановитих учених, які становили еліту української історичної науки кінця ХІХ – початку ХХ ст. Орест Левицький займає почесне місце серед них. Він був автором понад 200 наукових праць з правознавства та історії України XVI – XVIII cт. Для київської школи істориків Володимира Антоновича були характерні комплексність дослідження, ґрунтовність джерельної бази та наукового апарату досліджень, глибоке проникнення в суть проблеми. Ці риси характеризують наукову спадщину Ореста Левицького. Науковий доробок представників київської школи істориків Володимира Антоновича дає підстави вважати її першою національною школою дослідження історії України. Висвітлення напрацювань українських істориків у вивченні персоналії Ореста Левицького за 100 років ми вважаємо вшануванням його пам’яті у 175-річчя від дня народження.Prominent Ukrainian historian, archeographer, archivist, source researcher, ethnographer, scientist and public figure Orest Levytsky (1848–1922) belonged to the representatives of the older generation of the Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych at St. Volodymyr University. The study of his life, scientific activity, and creative legacy began after he died in 1922 and continues to this day. 2023 year marks the 175th anniversary of the scientist's birthday. The article examines the achievements of historians of Ukraine in the study of the personality of Orest Levytsky for 1923-2018. The Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych was part of the School of Historians of St. Volodymyr University in the 19th century. The development of historical science in the 1870s and 1890s at St. Volodymyr University can be attributed to the fourth development period of the School of Historians of St. Volodymyr University in the 19th century. The Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych gave the world about forty outstanding and talented scientists who were the elite of Ukrainian historical science in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Orest Levytsky occupies an honorable place among them. He was the author of more than 200 scientific works on the jurisprudence and history of Ukraine of the 16th - 18th centuries. The Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych was characterized by the complexity of the research, the thoroughness of the source base and the scientific apparatus of the developments, and deep penetration into the essence of the problem. These features characterize the scientific legacy of Orest Levytsky. The scientific output of representatives of the Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych gives reasons to consider it the first national school of Ukrainian history research. We consider the coverage of the achievements made in the study of the personality of Orest Levytsky by Ukrainian historians over 100 years as a tribute to his memory on the 175th anniversary of his birth
