    Hepatoprotective Activity of Ethanolic Fruit Extract of Ananus comosus in Paracetamol Induced Liver Toxicity in Rats

    The present study was undertaken for investigating the hepatoprotective effect of ethanolic fruit extract of Ananas comosus in paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity model in albino wistar rats. Silymarin was used as a standard hepatoprotective drug (100 mg/kg p.o). Ethanolic fruit extract of Ananus comosus (200 mg/kg p.o. & 400 mg/kg p.o) was administered one hour before the administration of paracetamol, once daily for 21 days. Liver biomarkers such as SGPT, SGOT, ALP, serum total bilirubin & total protein were elevated in the paracetamol group. Treatments with ethanolic fruit extract of Ananus comosus at 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg significantly reduced liver biomarker enzymes. Histopathological reports revealed that administration of paracetamol caused degeneration of fatty cysts, infiltration of lymphocytes, proliferation of kupffer cells and congestion of liver sinusoids. Upon treatment with ethanolic fruit extract of Ananus comosus, normal hepatic globular architecture, less lymphatic infiltration and normal kupffer cells proliferation were observed, suggesting that ethanolic fruit extract of Ananus comosus protects the liver from adverse conditions. Hence, the ethanolic fruit extract of Ananus comosus possesses hepatoprotective activity against paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity at a dose of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg

    In Vitro free radical scavenging potential of sap of Borassus flabellifer

    The present investigation was intended to assess the in vitro free radical scavenging potential of fresh sap of Borassus flabellifer. The different parts of the plant are broadly utilized for their restorative properties. In the present study, the in vitro antioxidant activity of sap of Borassus flabellifer was estimated with different concentrations (10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 μg/ml) dissolved in methanol by reducing power method and total antioxidant capacity assay. The results obtained were good compared with the standard drug ascorbic acid. The outcome of the study demonstrated that sap of Borassus flabellifer displayed significant antioxidant activity

    Tribological Evaluation of Date Palm Fruit Syrup–A Potential Environmental-Friendly Lubricant

    Date palm is one of the most cultivated palms mostly found in the Middle Eastern regions of the world. The date palm fruits are not only nutritionally rich, but also have a good amount of fatty acids such as oleic acid, palmitic acid, and linoleic acids, which have excellent anti-wear and lubricating properties, making it a potentially good candidate to be used as an environmentally-friendly lubricant. This study is a preliminary effort to explore the lubricating properties of date palm fruit syrup by conducting ball-on-disc wear tests on mild steel samples. Different concentrations (50, 75, and 100 vol %) of the syrup in water were tested at a normal load of 50 N and a sliding linear speed of 0.1 m/s. Scanning electron microscopy and optical profilometry were used to characterize the wear tracks and estimate the wear rates. 100 vol % date syrup with a viscosity of 16.95 mPa·s showed excellent results by reducing the coefficient of friction of steel-on-steel from 0.6 (dry conditions) to a value of ~0.1. The depth of the wear track reduced from ~152 µm (dry conditions) to ~11 µm, signifying a considerable reduction in wear

    This paper aims to study and analyze the tools of linguistic analysis contained in the modern monetary methods, which used by Kamal Abu Deeb in his book “in Defense of Qur'an” to respond to the claim of Thomas Holland and his teacher Patricia Krona presented in a television program on Channel 4 in England. They claimed the prophet Mohammed is a false personality and that the Qur'an is forged, invented by the Umayyad caliph Abdul Malik bin Marwan. The study focuses on the tools of linguistic analysis on which the textual methods, formalism, structuralism, stylistic, and deconstruction approaches are based, since they all depend on the linguistic analysis tools that established by Disusier. The study tried to examine the effectiveness of these tools, and how to work to serve the goals of the book and the purpose of its authorship, where Abu Deeb used to refute the case of Holland / Crowna, and hence prove that the Qor'an coherent text unified with single author, and that prophet Mohammed is real person, recognized, not only in Arabs and Muslims but in history and the world

    Experience Sharing on Virtual COOP Training to Mechanical Engineering Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic

    The COVID-19 pandemic, which started in December 2019, brought about a paradigm shift in the lifestyles of people worldwide due to the imposed constraints and lockdowns aimed at containing the spread of the infection. Each and every aspect of our lifestyle such as eating, travelling, socializing and learning was affected by this pandemic. Even the education sector was not untouched due to this pandemic, which caught the various stakeholders of this industry, such as the students, faculty and the administration, unaware. The education of a complete generation of kids and adults all over the world required some drastic adjustments so that their learning process would continue unaffected. Even though distance learning and online teaching have been around for a long time in the education sector, its importance was felt during this last year because of the role it played in the transfer of knowledge to students during the lockdowns wherein the students did not have access to physical classrooms and schools. Faculty, students and the administration developed new innovative ideas to adjust to this new change in teaching/learning styles and made the transition for all stakeholders a smooth and an enlightening experience. One such change had to be made in the delivery style of the cooperative program (COOP) for Mechanical engineering students at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM). COOP is a 9-credit hour course that a student with a junior standing in the Applied Mechanical Engineering program (AME) has to take and pass. It requires the student to spend about seven months in the industry to learn applications in a practical environment and solve practical problems with the aid of the theoretical knowledge gained by him in the courses. However, due to the sudden lockdown in March 2020, most of the industries downed their shutters, which left these poor students halfway stranded through their COOP course. Hence, in order to cater to these students, the administration came up with the idea of substituting physical training with virtual training without compromising on the quality of the education. Comprehensive procedures on the various modules designed and delivered under this new virtual training program, the mode of instruction used, the assessment methods implemented and the experiences of the students are presented in this paper, which can be of tremendous help to various stakeholders

    UHMWPE Nanocomposite Coatings Reinforced with Alumina (Al2O3) Nanoparticles for Tribological Applications

    Due to a growing demand for protecting metallic components from wear and tear, polymer coatings are being extensively researched and developed as one of the most effective and efficient solutions to reduce friction and wear in demanding tribological applications. The present study focuses on developing a polymer nanocomposite coating of ultra-high molecular polyethylene (UHMWPE) reinforced with different loadings (0.5, 3, 5, and 10 wt %) of alumina to protect steel surfaces. Wear tests were conducted on the coated samples using a tribometer with a ball-on-disk configuration, sliding against a 440C hardened stainless steel ball as a counterface to evaluate the wear life and the load-bearing capacity of the developed coatings. Micro-indentation, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and optical profilometry techniques were used to characterize the coatings in terms of hardness, dispersion of the nanofillers, morphology, and wear mechanisms, respectively. Results showed that the UHMWPE nanocomposite coating reinforced with 3 wt % and 5 wt % of alumina did not fail, even until 250,000 cycles at a normal load of 12 N and a linear speed of 0.1 m/s, showing a significant improvement in wear resistance as compared to the pristine UHMWPE coating
