Implementation of Epidemic Restrictions to Disrupt the COVID-19 Pandemic in Iran: A Mini-Review

    No full text
The number of cases infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes COVID-19, has been steadily rising globally. Iran, one of the countries with a relatively high number of positive cases, has an inevitable role to play in controlling the pandemic by implementing effective policies and countermeasures to interrupt the viral transmission chain. Epidemic restrictions implemented following an Iranian presidential mandate were especially effective following the Nowruz holidays—the solar New Year celebration in the Persian-speaking culture. These restrictions started flattening the incidence curve of the epidemic in Iran two weeks after implementation, from 10 April 2020. Supplying sufficient face masks, disinfectants, sanitizers, and medical equipment to all government-run and non-for-profit hospitals were included in the presidential mandate. We believe that continuing this policy strictly will be required for further controlling the pandemic throughout the country. *Corresponding Author: Amin Talebi Bezmin Abadi; Email: [email protected] Please cite this article as: Talebi Bezmin Abadi A, Rahimi F. Where should reading strategies be taught first: In Persian (L1), English (L2) or Arabic (L3)? / Seyed Hassan Talebi

    No full text
This paper touches upon issues and trends in language transfer studies and reading research. Then, a brief report of three separate published papers by the author on the transfer of reading strategies from L1 to L2, L2 to L3 and L2 to L1 will be provided. In language transfer studies the idea is that languages affect each other. But, from where is it logical to lay the stepping stones of strategic reading if it is believed awareness of reading strategies transfer from one language to another in a multilingual mind? It seems it is logical and cost effective to improve strategic reading competence in L1 if it is shown that learners' skills and experiences in language learning are cross-linguistically linked together

Roadmap to Stop the Predatory Journals: Author\'s Perspective

    No full text
Recent disgracing reports are warning the scientific communities to think more about the solutions to win the battle against predatory journals and publishers. Current integrity and accuracy in science is a result of decades of honest works and publications which are an asset, now everyone as stakeholders of science should feel the responsibility to sustain its high privileged level. The ethical sides of this duty need careful considerations by science stakeholders worldwide. Boosting the weak resume, getting higher and faster promotion and permanent jobs in academia cannot figure out as reasonable excuses to publish unethically. Hereby, I suggest a practical roadmap based on certain strategies which are recommendable for the scientific community. This paper describes author‘s perspective about predatory journals and how we can stop them. Moreover, following the appearance of the predatory journal, this is a first article discussing root cause analysis on this global scientific problem. Last but not least, predatory journals are not too bad! Since they can be considered as a critical discriminatory tool to distinguish between individuals who work truly standard and who pretend to work standard.&nbsp

Beyond the Hype: Assessing the Performance, Trustworthiness, and Clinical Suitability of GPT3.5

The use of large language models (LLMs) in healthcare is gaining popularity, but their practicality and safety in clinical settings have not been thoroughly assessed. In high-stakes environments like medical settings, trust and safety are critical issues for LLMs. To address these concerns, we present an approach to evaluate the performance and trustworthiness of a GPT3.5 model for medical image protocol assignment. We compare it with a fine-tuned BERT model and a radiologist. In addition, we have a radiologist review the GPT3.5 output to evaluate its decision-making process. Our evaluation dataset consists of 4,700 physician entries across 11 imaging protocol classes spanning the entire head. Our findings suggest that the GPT3.5 performance falls behind BERT and a radiologist. However, GPT3.5 outperforms BERT in its ability to explain its decision, detect relevant word indicators, and model calibration. Furthermore, by analyzing the explanations of GPT3.5 for misclassifications, we reveal systematic errors that need to be resolved to enhance its safety and suitability for clinical use

Change in Attitude in Renal Function in Major Beta Thalassemia

Thalassemia is a multisystemic disease in the field of hemolysis and chronic anemia caused by the erythropoietic disorder. The severe effects of iron overload from continuous blood transfusion iron chelators side effects, and involvement of multiple organs in thalassemias such as heart failure, liver, and endocrine dysfunction can all affect kidney function. Although there has been much debate about changes in renal function in thalassemia for many years, the presence of hyperfiltration and ultimately, decreased renal function in almost all studies. It seems for the researchers to look beyond kidney function in a thalassemia perspective, because of secretory biomarkers of proximal tubular renal cells that are sensitive to pathologic agents, which may be a good indicator of the courses of treatment and prognosis of patients. Future studies will be sooner or later. *Corresponding Author: Malihe Najafpour; Email: [email protected] Please cite this article as: Malaki M, Najafpour M, Talebi M, Azimi A. (Glabrobracon) pelliger); 1969: 424; Shenefelt, 1978: 1579; Tobias, 1986: 135 (in key); Papp, 2008: 1749 (assigned to the subgenus Osculobracon); Yu et al., 2016. Material. Holotype: female, Kazakhstan, Karaganda Region, S Atasu (Zhana-Arka), Koksengir Mountains, on flowering Ferula caspica, 15.vi.1958, V.I. Tobias (ZISP). Paratypes: 2♀, same locality and collector, 12.vi.1958 (ZISP). Additional material: 1♀, Mongolia, Govi-Altai Province, 35 km WSW Bur-Nur Lake, 18.VII.1970, M.A. Kozlov (ZISP). Diagnosis. Bracon pelliger may be separated from other species of the subgenus Osculobracon by the following characters: fore wing vein 1-R1 0.72–0.84× as long as pterostigma (Fig. 2A); vein 3-SR 0.95–1.10× as long as vein 2-SR; anterolateral margin of second metasomal tergite largely desclerotized (Fig. 2C); median length of first metasomal tergite (measured from petiolar tubercle) 1.5–2.0× larger than median length of second tergite; apical width of first tergite 1.1–1.2× larger than median length of second tergite; second metasomal tergite medially 0.50– 0.67× as long as third tergite and 0.95–1.10× as long as its sclerotized part (Fig. 2C); ovipositor sheath 0.18–0.23× as long as fore wing (Fig. 1A). Remark. Based on the ICZN (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature) (i.e., article 47.1) “When a species is considered to contain subspecies, the subspecies that contains the name-bearing type of the nominal species is denoted by the same species-group name as the species, with the same author and date; this subspecies is termed the nominotypical subspecies” (ICZN 1999). Therefore, Tobias, 1961 is considered as the author of the subspecies B.
