    No full text
This study delves into the diverse manifestations and underlying mechanisms of ischemic infarctions in individuals suffering from systemic malignancies. Four distinct cases illuminate the intricate interplay between cancer, therapeutic interventions, and the resultant complications. The first case involves a 35-year-old male with chronic eosinophilic leukemia undergoing a grave course marked by variable responses to treatment, ischemic events, and nosocomial infections. The second case involves a 42-year-old woman diagnosed with breast cancer, who suffered from severe headaches, seizures, and neurological decline, ultimately passing away due to suspected carcinomatous meningitis and ischemic strokes. The third case describes a 38-year-old woman with pancreaticobiliary carcinoma, pulmonary embolism, and an acute/subacute ischemic infarction in the right middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory, likely due to a thrombo-embolic phenomenon. Lastly, a 45-year-old woman with ovarian carcinoma showcases the intricacies of ischemic stroke involving both anterior and posterior circulation likely due to hypercoagulability

'Conversion of African Americans to Islam: A Sociological Analysis of the Nation of Islam Associated groups' is an empirical study of the religious experience of people who had/have distinctive features in terms of race, ethnicity and historical experience. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how African Americans' (AAs) conversion experience in general, and the Nation of Islam associated groups' conversion in particular, differ from the studies of recruitment and conversion in the sociology of religion and New Religion Movements (NRMs). More specifically, their recruitment and conversion experiences to Islam diverge from those who converted to mainstream Islam. The study investigates how AAs' historical experience, soci-economic difficulties and the racism they encountered shaped and influenced their religious understanding. Research methods involved participant observations, a survey questionnaire, interviews, conversations, personal communications and correspondence. To collect ethnographic data eleven months field research was conducted mainly in the Chicago area and on two short visits to Detroit, and three years continued communications with Muslim officials and academics in the area. During the field research and afterwards through personal communication 181 survey questionnaire responses were received, and 23 Muslim officials, academics and ordinary Muslims were interviewed through semi-structured, unstructured interviews, conversation and correspondence. The thesis begins with a brief history of Islam and Muslims in general and the African American Muslims (AAMs) in particular. More emphasis is given on the historical development of the Nation of Islam (NOl). Then in Chapter III, discussions of schisms in the history of the NOT are examined from sociological perspectives of social and religious movements. In Chapter IV I aimed to formulate my own perspective to analyse and study the conversion experiences of AAMs to Islam. I used a multivariate approach, considering selectively widely held conversion and recruitment theories in the sociology of the religion. I consider in Chapter V the predisposing conditions for AAMs that influence their decision-making to join in the NOT, for example, political and nationalistic sentiments and socio-economic deprivations. In Chapter VI I have applied different terms to describe their religious experiences, such as conversion, alteration and reversion. I have analysed further their encounters with the NOT, the methods of recruitment they used and their major motives for joining the NOT and converting to Tslam. In the concluding chapters (Chapter VII VTTT) I describe the different responses of AAMS to Islam following the death of Elijah Muhammad. It is found out that the Islamic appeal has polarised. While Farakhan's NOT appeared to continue the tradition and style of the old NOI with the emphasis on nationalistic and socio-economic factors, Tmam W. D. Mohammed's community turned more to the religious and spiritual aspects of Tslam. These different approaches led to a polarisation of the appeal of Tslam to AAMS. This thesis contributes to knowledge in four key areas; the sociology of religion and religious movements, the sociology of social and nationalistic movements, religious and Islamic studies

Ostracism and Violence in The Contemporary History of Religions

    No full text
Psychology explores the motivation for certain kinds of behaviour such as violence. This study investigates the correlation between religion-based violence and ostracism. There is evidence to suggest that those who are chronically ostracized could become involved in forms of extremism and violence that is not necessarily inspired by their religious tradition. Religious minorities belonging to any faith sometimes join extremist groups after being ostracized in order to compensate for their basic human need to belong. If Islamophobia is understood as the exclusion of Muslims from western societies, it is one form of ostracism. Some Muslims in Europe feel that the wider society does not recognize them as full citizens. Moreover, anti-Semitism and negative attitudes to the Christian community in Pakistan are also examples of ostracism.  Policy-makers could take steps to reduce the danger of the violence provoked by ostracism

“Injaz al-Hajah Sharh Sunan Ibn Majah” was written in Arabic by Muhammad Ali Janbaz, a renowned scholar from Pakistan. In this book, after verifying each hadith, he identified its authenticity and weakness, and also provided brief biographies of the narrators mentioned in the hadith. This research encompasses the commentator's adopted approach in introducing the narrators of hadith, where: Verbatim quotes are taken from basic sources and references. Statements are concisely paraphrased, omitting names of teachers and students. Selective references are made to the opinions of prominent Imams of hadith criticism regarding the authentication and weakening of narrators. The commentator mentions the opinions of scholars of Rijal (biographies of narrators) without referencing specific books. Sometimes, he quotes from sources by mentioning their names. As needed, the commentator also provides the correct pronunciation of the names of narrators. He concisely mentions the biographies of shared narrators found in Sahihain (Bukhari and Muslim) and Sunan Ibn Majah. Sometimes, the commentator considers a narrator's presence in Sahihain  sufficient and doesn't provide their biography. For Sunan Ibn Majah's unique narrators, the Imams' opinions are noted. He clarified that although there are many unreliable narrators, trustworthy ones also exist. In Injaz al-Hajah, the commentator has kept personal commentary on narrators to a minimum. After mentioning the differences of opinion among the Imams, he rely on Ibn Hajar's statement. Rarely, he express his personal opinion

Development and characterization of non-proprietary ultra high performance concrete

    No full text
This paper presents the developmental process of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), the most advanced form of concrete. The entire process exclusively utilized locally available materials. The mixes were prepared without using any specialized mixer or treatments, such as elevated pressure, etc. The primary objective of the research was to develop low-cost non-proprietary version of UHPC by optimizing both cementitious and non-cementitious materials to attain the highest levels of workability, compressive strength, flexural strength and durability. The research utilizes a trial-and-error approach, subjecting specimens to curing in both regular and heated water. The findings validate the viability of producing self-compacting UHPC with compressive strength ranging from 120 to 160 MPa, employing local materials and manufacturing methods. Raw materials and mixing sequence had a significant influence on the fresh and hardened properties of UHPC. The inclusion of steel fibers and the application of heat treatment remarkably enhanced the compressive strength. Furthermore, cost analysis revealed that this particular UHPC is only slightly over four times more expensive than conventional concrete, in contrast to commercially available UHPC, which is approximately 10 times expensive than traditional concrete

Nearfield imaging for noninvasive monitoring of hyperthermia treatment

    No full text
Hyperthermia treatment has the potential to enhance cancer therapy and reduce the side effects associated with conventional therapeutic plans. Commercial systems depend typically on narrowband operation and exploit single element applicators to drive energy into treated tissue. In addition, monitoring of thermal distribution depends on invasive intraluminal or interstitial probes. This research aims at developing a proficient platform that addresses some challenges of hyperthermia therapy. A system is suggested that depends on multichannel wideband operation, and implements applicator array. The configuration of this system allows the control of energy localization at various depth of tumors. In addition, the information associated with scattered wideband signals allow performing nearfield imaging, to reconstruct tissue characteristics maps. To investigate system performance, a model is developed of the forward problem, incorporating dispersive wideband models of tissue properties. A tool is developed to generate a dictionary that relates scattered signals to material features. Solution of the inverse problem is conducted based on compressed sensing techniques. Orthogonal matching pursuit OMP models are developed to enhance the resolution of image reconstruction. With the dependence of tissue electrical properties on temperature, thermal maps are generated. Practical aspects of the nonlinearity associated with wideband power amplifiers are incorporated in the model. Analysis of the reconstructed images reveals the validity of the proposed techniques. In particular, encouraging results are obtained of thermal mapping, denoting the potential of using nearfield imaging as a noninvasive thermometry tool, in monitoring hyperthermia treatment.</p

    No full text
The current study examined reduction of moisture from agricultural energy and food crops in a conventional oven to a solar dryer at various treatment periods at temperature between 40 ± 10 oC.  Sugarcane bagasse and Phragmites Australis had initial moisture of 50.8 % and 6.07 % by dry weight, respectively, with higher heating values (HHV) 6548.5 kJ/kg and 17653.02 kJ/kg respectively. The moisture content of bagasse and phragmites were decreased by 51.31% and 68.69% respectively using oven drying, while the moisture content of bagasse and phragmites was reduced by 48.01% and 66.22% respectively, using solar drying with 5 hrs treatment time. Corresponding increase in HHV’s observed in bagasse to 11195.6 KJ/kg (oven drying) and 10998.1 KJ/kg (solar drying), while HHV of phragmites increased to 18706.79KJ/kg (oven drying) and 18685.36KJ/kg (solar drying). Green chillies had a moisture content reduction by 33.69 % (oven) and 8.28 % (solar), whereas grapes had a reduction by 31.20 % (oven) and 7.88 % (solar) with 5 hrs treatment time. The oven drying approach revealed higher carbohydrate content in food crops when compared to solar drying, while both treatments showed a similar drop in protein, fat, and vitamin C contents. Statistical and energy analysis observed that comparing solar drying; the oven drying eliminates slightly higher moisture content and have less drying energy requirements.  The amount of heat energy required for drying unit mass of bagasse was 0.476 kJ/kg (oven) and 0.556 kJ/kg (solar), for phragmites it was 0.074 kJ/kg (oven) and 0.092 kJ/kg (solar), for chilles 0.524 kJ/kg (oven) and 0.576 kJ/kg (solar) and for grapes 0.123 kJ/kg (oven) and 0.157 MJ/kg (solar). According to the results solar drying required greater quantity of heat energy than oven drying. Mass transfer analysis showed drying constant of bagasse and phragmites were higher initially, then showed reducing trend with respect time. Furthermore, it was observed that the effective diffusivity and mass transfer coefficient were found reducing with respect to increasing drying treatment time. The research findings of renewable solar drying, on the other hand, are comparable to those of oven drying, demonstrating that there is still enough untapped heat energy available for its utilization in biomass thermo-chemical conversion methods
