Azad, SA ORCiD: 0000-0002-6377-7912; Ray, BR ORCiD: 0000-0002-3016-1695Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology has many applications such as supply chain management, asset tracking, healthcare and logistics. Since RFID tags and readers communicate through a wireless medium, they are prone to a wide range of attacks. There are a number of measures to safeguard the security of RFID device operations and communications: mutual authentication, confidentiality, indistinguishability, forward security, and desynchronisation resilience. Due to limited computational power and memory, heavy-weight encryption functions cannot be performed in the RFID tags to execute the security protocols. Therefore, RFID security protocols are restricted to light-weight encryption functions such as simple one-way hash function, cyclic redundancy check (CRC), pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) and exclusive-OR (XOR). This paper develops a lightweight secure authentication protocol to mutually authenticate the RFID tag and the reader through an insecure radio communication channel. The protocol assumes that each RFID tag pre-shares a secret key with the reader. The protocol uses two random values to guarantee the freshness of the messages in order to outwit any replay attack. An analysis of the protocol using Scyther verification tool shows that the protocol ensures secure communication between the reader and the RFID tag provided the communication channel between the back-end server and the reader is protected

Bitrate modeling of scalable videos using quantization parameter, frame rate and spatial resolution

    No full text
The quality and bitrate modeling is essential to effectively adapt the bitrate and quality of videos when delivered to multiplatform devices over resource constraint heterogeneous networks. The recent model proposed by Wang et al. estimates the bitrate and quality of videos in terms of the frame rate and quantization parameter. However, to build an effective video adaptation framework, it is crucial to incorporate the spatial resolution in the analytical model for bitrate and perceptual quality adaptation. Hence, this paper proposes an analytical model to estimate the bitrate of videos in terms of quantization parameter, frame rate, and spatial resolution. The model can fit the measured data accurately which is evident from the high Pearson correlation. The proposed model is based on the observation that the relative reduction in bitrate due to decreasing spatial resolution is independent of the quantization parameter and frame rate. This modeling can be used for rate-constrained bit-stream adaptation scheme which selects the scalability parameters to optimize the perceptual quality for a given bandwidth constraint

Measuring bitrate and quality trade-off in a fast region-of-interest based video coding

    No full text
Prevailing video adaptation solutions change the quality of the video uniformly throughout the whole frame in the bitrate adjustment process; while region-of-interest (ROI)-based solutions selectively retains the quality in the areas of the frame where the viewers are more likely to pay more attention to. ROI-based coding can improve perceptual quality and viewer satisfaction while trading off some bandwidth. However, there has been no comprehensive study to measure the bitrate vs. perceptual quality trade-off so far. The paper proposes an ROI detection scheme for videos, which is characterized with low computational complexity and robustness, and measures the bitrate vs. quality trade-off for ROI-based encoding using a state-of-the-art H.264/AVC encoder to justify the viability of this type of encoding method. The results from the subjective quality test reveal that ROI-based encoding achieves a significant perceptual quality improvement over the encoding with uniformquality at the cost of slightly more bits. Based on the bitrate measurements and subjective quality assessments, the bitrate and the perceptual quality estimation models for non-scalable ROI-based video coding (AVC) are developed, which are found to be similar to the models for scalable video coding (SVC)

ABSTRACT This study aims at investigating the relationship between work ethic and justice perception in the professors and employees of Islamic Azad Universities. The research methodology was descriptive-correlational and the data was collected via field procedure. The population of the study consisted of all the professors and employees of Islamic Azad Universities (N=60000). The participants of the study were 800 professors and employees who were selected from among the population based on cluster random sampling. The sample size was determined using Morgan table. 569 posted questionnaires were completed and returned by the participants. To assess work ethic and the ratio of justice perception, a summarized version of Ali's questionnaire (1998) and Starvan's employees' justice perception questionnaire (1996) were used, respectively. In order to assure the validity of the questionnaires, they were submitted to some professors in the department of Theology and Islamic Thoughts as well as some other experts. Subsequently, the experts' opinions regarding all the questionnaire items were applied in moderating the scales. The reliability of the scales in a sample group using Cronbach's alpha coefficient was calculated to be 0.83 and using test-retest method to be 0.76. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Qualitative data was described using percentage and frequency counts and quantitative data was illustrated using measures of central tendency and variability. Besides, based on the objectives of the study and data type, t test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used as inferential statistics. The results showed that, out of the maximum mean score of 5 for work ethic, the participants' mean score was 4.09 with the standard deviation of 0.48. The participants' mean score of justice perception was 2.80 with the standard deviation of 0.70, out of maximum mean score of 5. The results of hypothesis tests revealed a weak positive correlation (r=0.280) between work ethic and justice perception in the professors and employees of (all participants) Islamic Azad University

IMPACTS OF HOT IN-PLACE RECYCLING TECHNIQUES IN PAKISTAN

    No full text
A hot in-place recycling (HIR) technique was employed for the first time on Lahore-Islamabad Motorway in 2005 to rehabilitate sections where the rut depth was about 40 mm. Since HIR technology was new to Pakistan, research was carried out to study the effects of recycled wearing course of pavement. It was accomplished by comparing structural adequacy of pavement and material characterization before and after recycling.Analysis of recycled HMA wearing course indicated a reduction in modulus for a mix that was very stiff and aged prior to recycling. Relative degradation of the HMA wearing course was observed; however, it remained close to standard specifications specified by Executing Agency National Highway Authority (NHA). The research enhanced awareness of HIR among local engineers and contractors
