Jorge Sahade: First Latin American IAU President
Get PDFProf. Jorge Sahade (1915-2012) was the first Latin American President of the International Astronomical Union (1985-1988). From then on, he had a very active participation as president, vice-president, and organizing committee member of several Commissions and Divisions of the IAU, related to stellar astrophysics and exchange of astronomers. Prof. J. Sahade was born in Argentina and was one of the first students graduated in astronomy at the National University of La Plata. He served as director of the Astronomical Observatory of Córdoba (1953-1955) and of the Observatory of La Plata (1968-1969). He was the first Dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the National University of La Plata. He promoted the purchase of a 2.15-m diameter telescope, today located in the Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito, San Juan, Argentina. He founded the Institute of Astronomy and Physics of Space (IAFE) in Buenos Aires and was its first director (1971-1974). He was also director of the "Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales" (the Argentina Space Activity Agency) and promoted the inclusion of Argentina as a partnership of the Gemini Observatory. Prof. Sahade also focused on the development of the astronomy in Latin America and this led to the creation of the "Liga Latinoamericana de Astronomía" (nowadays LIADA).Fil: Cidale, Lydia Sonia. Proyecto de autoguiado para el telescopio Jorge Sahade
Get PDFEn marzo del año 2019 se comenzó con el pre-proyecto de autoguiado para el foco Nasmyth del Telescopio Jorge Sahade del Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito (CASLEO). Este nuevo sistema, que ha sido requerido por la comunidad científica, mejorará notablemente la imagen en directo. En este tiempo se realizaron diferentes tipos de pruebas relacionadas a la óptica del telescopio, tales como medición del campo primario útil (determinado en 32 minutos de arco de diámetro), pruebas de adquisición en directo con la cámara principal más cámara de guiado fija y diseño 3D de soportes. Actualmente se cuenta con un nuevo soporte X-Y con los mecanismos y motores para poder ubicar la nueva cámara de guiado en el área de búsqueda, como así también se realizó la programación del microcontrolador que ejecuta dicho posicionamiento.The autoguider pre-project phase for the Nasmyth focus of the Jorge Sahade Telescope (El Leoncito Astronomical Complex) began in March 2019. This new system, required by the scientific community, will significantly improve the Direct Imaging performance. During this time, different types of tests were carried out related to the telescope optics, such as the measurement of the useful primary field (32 arcmin in diameter), direct imaging tests with the main camera plus fixed guide camera and 3D design of mechanical supports. Spectral modelling of circular massive binary systems. Towards an understanding of the Struve-Sahade effect?
Get PDFpeer reviewedContext. Some secondary effects are known to introduce variations in spectra of massive binaries. These phenomena, such as the Struve-Sahade effect and the difficulties in determining properly the spectral type have been reported and documented in the literature. Aims: We simulate the spectra of circular massive binaries at different phases of the orbital cycle and account for the gravitational influence of the companion star on the shape and physical properties of the stellar surface. Methods: We use the Roche potential to compute the stellar surface, von Zeipel theorem, and reflection effects to compute the surface temperature. We then interpolate in a grid of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) plan-parallel atmosphere model spectra to obtain the local spectrum at each surface point. We finally sum all the contributions, accounting for the reflection, Doppler shift, and limb-darkening to obtain the total spectrum. The computation is done for different orbital phases and for different sets of physical and orbital parameters. Results: Our models reproduce the Struve-Sahade effect for several lines. Another effect on the surface temperature distribution is visible but the distribution predicted by our current model is not yet consistent with observations. Conclusions: In some cases, the Struve-Sahade effect as well as more complex line intensity variations could be linked to blends of intrinsically asymmetric line profiles that are not appropriately treated by the deblending routine. Systematic variations in the lines of (nearly) contact systems are also predicted by the model
