    No full text
This research article studies the sustainable development and renewable energy consumption nexus in Turkiye from 1980-2019 using the ARDL bounds testing approach. It has a unique identity since it uses the three elements of sustainable development: society, environment, and economic efficiency to assess the relationship. The result of the empirical analysis showed a one-way relationship from economic growth to the renewable energy consumption of Turkiye in the long run. Moreover, using renewable sources will decrease carbon emissions keeping a positive impact on the environmental aspect of sustainability in Turkiye. On the other hand, it is observed that as society improves in terms of MHDI, the need to utilize alternative energy sources reduces. The findings of this research would be crucial for the government, policymakers, researchers, etc., because this study is a fresh evidence in assessing the relationship of renewable energy consumption in Turkiye with sustainable development encompassing all the pillars (i.e., social, economic, and environmental) of it. The paper would also help address climate change, environmental pollution, quality of life, Turkiye's development sustainably, etc. This paper will also be an essential addition to the literature on Turkiye's sustainable development perspective.

Movement Behaviour of Traditionally Managed Cattle in the Eastern Province of Zambia Captured Using Two-Dimensional Motion Sensors

Two-dimensional motion sensors use electronic accelerometers to record the lying, standing and walking activity of cattle. Movement behaviour data collected automatically using these sensors over prolonged periods of time could be of use to stakeholders making management and disease control decisions in rural sub-Saharan Africa leading to potential improvements in animal health and production. Motion sensors were used in this study with the aim of monitoring and quantifying the movement behaviour of traditionally managed Angoni cattle in Petauke District in the Eastern Province of Zambia. This study was designed to assess whether motion sensors were suitable for use on traditionally managed cattle in two veterinary camps in Petauke District in the Eastern Province of Zambia. In each veterinary camp, twenty cattle were selected for study. Each animal had a motion sensor placed on its hind leg to continuously measure and record its movement behaviour over a two week period. Analysing the sensor data using principal components analysis (PCA) revealed that the majority of variability in behaviour among studied cattle could be attributed to their behaviour at night and in the morning. The behaviour at night was markedly different between veterinary camps; while differences in the morning appeared to reflect varying behaviour across all animals. The study results validate the use of such motion sensors in the chosen setting and highlight the importance of appropriate data summarisation techniques to adequately describe and compare animal movement behaviours if association to other factors, such as location, breed or health status are to be assessed.</p

Takaful is the Islamic version of insurance, and the size of global takaful industry is about USD$51 billion in 2019. Limited studies have been conducted on the development of takaful sector in Bangladesh and Indonesia using a comparative approach. As such, this review aims at investigating the challenges facing the development of takaful industry in these two countries. Primary sources such as laws and regulations, and the secondary sources such as scholarly articles and books on the subject matter were reviewed to derive conclusions. This review concludes that efficiency of takaful in both countries depend on some common factors, such as having a proper and sophisticated regulatory framework for takaful with the development of required talent pool while focusing on creating awareness and education to ensure that not only the general public have the required takaful literacy; but even the existing and potential customers have the basic knowledge about takaful. Further, it is also found in this review that in order to further develop the takaful industry in both countries, it is imperative to use innovation and technology to promote takaful parallel to the conventional insurance by creating a level playing field. This review also identifies some specific issues in both countries and have suggested recommendations accordingly. It is anticipated that the outcome of this review will assist policy makers and other stakeholders to understand the inhibitions facing the development of takaful industry in these two jurisdictions with hope that these challenges can be eliminated for the sustainable development of takaful sector. ABSTRACT When discussing creation in the Quran, it was not far from the words "khalaqa" and "ja'ala," which meant creating in a general sense. Both words seemed similar, but their meanings differed when examined more closely. Previous research focused more on the interpretation of "khalaqa" and "ja'ala" separately, without comparing the two, although when examined further, both words had synonyms but differed in their usage within a verse. This research became interesting because it discussed the differences in thought between "khalaqa" and "ja'ala" in the thinking of Ibn Kaṡīr and Sayyid Qutb. Several questions were posed in this research, including: How does the narrative of the sacred text regarding creation in the verses of the Quran? And how is the interpretation of the narrative related to creation in the Tafsir of Ibn Kaṡīr and the Tafsir Fi Zhilalil Qur’an? To answer these questions, the author used a library research method by gathering related data to help complete this research. The primary data sources in this study were interpretations of Quranic verses written by Ibn Katsir titled Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Adzim and Sayyid Qutb titled Tafsir Fi Zhilalil Qur’an. This research concluded that regarding the words "khalaqa" and "ja'ala," generally, Sayyid Qutb and Ibn Kaṡīr had the same interpretation in interpreting "khalaqa" and "ja'ala" with the meaning of creation. Specifically, Sayyid Qutb and Ibn Katsir also had the same direction in interpreting or explaining "khalaqa," which was to interpret the meaning of "creation" from the word "khalaqa" as a creation sourced from Allah SWT, which no one could rival. The same applied to the word "ja'ala," which meant making, creating, or establishing something into something else. Although these two interpretations had different backgrounds, namely, Ibn Kaṡīr's Tafsir being one of the classical books and having a pattern of bi al-ma’ṡūr interpretation, while Tafsir Fi Zhilalil Qur’an being one of Sayyid Qutb's early contemporary books using a linguistic pattern (arts and literature), they both had the same final interpretation of the words "khalaqa" and "ja'ala." The different backgrounds between Ibn Kaṡīr and Sayyid Qutb did not make their interpretations different.

On Islamic Feminism: Feminist Interpretation of the Quran and the Fight for Gender Equality

    No full text
abstract: In this essay, I discuss Islamic feminism from the point of view of its proponents. By this, I hope to engage Muslims and traditionalists. Islamic feminism is the fight for gender equality, as a challenge to the way traditional Islam has perpetuated patriarchal power structures in the Muslim world. Today, feminist sentiment is on the rise in the Islamic world as more and more women are becoming engaged in this fight for gender equality. Islamic feminism reclaims the Quran as its justification and involves the struggle for gender equality grounded in this justification. I divulge into two linked claims: a normative one where gender equality is justified in Islam, and a descriptive one which posits that male domination over interpretive powers has distorted the way Islam has been practiced traditionally, thus placing women in a disadvantaged position. Islamic feminists, I have found, seek to reject the widespread patriarchal interpretation of the Quran by first, reinterpreting the Quran as an equalizing force, and then implementing Islamic feminism in the public sphere. I show that they do this by engaging politically and civically through activism, education, and political involvement — this I refer to as civic Islam, highlighting that public engagement is an inherent Islamic duty. For this end, I cite several countries — including Iran, Yemen, Tunisia — in which Islamic feminists have taken up the mantle as activists, and what their impact has been through brief case studies. In the end, I include my reflection on Islamic feminism as a college-educated Muslim woman having grown up in a Western, liberal society
